Based on JVC’s new proprietary 1.27-inch 10 megapixel D-ILA devices, the DLA-SH4K projects images at greater than 4 times the resolution and clarity of the industry's latest full high definition projectors. The higher resolution will bring a new level of reality to aircraft simulators, medical analysis, 3D display, command and control, museums, theme parks, and ultra high-end home theaters. The D-ILA devices used in the DLA-SH4K provide a native 4096 x 2400 resolution-multi-screen display modes that allow users to view up to four Full HD screens at a time. A new optical design featuring an 825 Watt Xenon lamp generates a light output of 3500 ANSI Lumens and features adjustable lamp power that ranges from 825 to 660 watts.

The JVC DLA-SH4K includes DVI-D (dual-link) x 4 input terminals that accept a wide variety of input resolutions. In addition to the RS-232C and USB connections, an Ethernet interface makes adjustment and installation from web browsers on PCs possible. Furthermore, networking allows multiple projectors to be operated with a single PC and an email function also enables the sending out of error messages and lamp replacement reminders. The JVC DLA-SH4K will be unveiled at CEDIA September 3 - 6, 2008 and will be on display throughout the show in the JVC Theater located at The Denver Center for the Performing Arts next to the Denver convention center.

I had the good fortune to review the BRAZO table lamp by Pablo Designs, winner of a 2008 IDEA award. The BRAZO is a high performance LED task light offering effortless adjustability, calibrated light focus (more on that later), and brightness control all wrapped in a sleek aluminum body. Intrigued? Read on.

Upon first glance, the precision machined aluminum body speaks volumes about the build quality. It’s hefty - in a good way. It comes fully assembled except for the base which you just screw on. Excited I immediately plugged it in and came away with both positive and negative conclusions.

The LEDs are bright. The built in dimmer, cleverly integrated into the fully adjustable arm, quickly ramps up the illumination. We’re talking 450 lumens here. Plenty powerful for a task light and on par with CFL and incandescent varieties. I decided to leave it at a lower setting, just enough to achieve that eery glow.

Adjusting where you want the arm and where to focus the light couldn’t be easier. The stem telescopes from 14″ to 21″. The arm swings 360º effortlessly. The mechanism seems finely tuned. There’s no awkward bounce or tension. Smooth is the best way I can describe it. The glass tube housing the 18 LEDs can rotate to focus the light. Amazingly nothing gets hot. Heat dissipation seems to have been a priority since the glass tube is open on one end.

What I didn’t like was the light color. I know I know, I’m only bias because my eyes are used to the warm glow of incandescents. The stark white, almost medical lab like color took time getting used to. Not to mention there are a lot of metals and woods in my home decor. The harsh lighting did nothing to bring out the warm rich colors. I don’t purport to be an expert in lighting but I would think LEDs could be tuned to cast a warmer color.

At $400 it’s not cheap but you get what you pay for. If you want a cutting edge lamp that bleeds style and quality - go for it. After a week I’m finding the BRAZO lamp has become the most used light in my home office. I may hate the color it casts but in hindsight, it doesn’t compete with my computer screen the way a CFL or incandescent lamp does and that’s super important to any designer.

We have featured before the car that has a breathalyzer which monitors the alcohol level of drivers. Now, another concept car is created that intends to give a medical analysis too. This time, it concerns the glucose level of the drivers, particularly the diabetic ones.

Medtronic, a medical device manufacturing company created the M-Powered Concept Car. The car features an onboard glucose monitoring system positioned right a t the dashboard. The set-up works as the driver wears a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) and via Bluetooth, the data is transmitted to the wireless system. Audio and visual cues from the car’s dashboard show the readings of the driver’s blood sugar level.

This helps diabetics avoid losing consciousness and a hypoglycemic attack. When the reading indicates that the blood sugar level is too low, the driver can pull over and go to the nearest restaurant or rest stop as directed by the system. It works like a GPS system.

M-Powered Concept Car was presented at the 68th Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association. As of the moment, there is no update yet regarding the availability of the system. But the people behind the project are hopeful that by the time it gets out in the market, the car will have more useful elements to offer.

Pakistan's Prisons Department has carried out a series of sweeps of prisoners at Camp Jail using metal detectors and seized 30 mobile phones which had been hidden in their rectums. Seven of the prisoners had to have medical intervention to remove the phones.

Camp Jail Superintendent Gulzar Ahmad Butt said that the mobile phones had been found during a physical search of the prisoners and when they were screened with metal detectors.

The identity of the seven men has been made public via the prison notice board and they have been placed in chakkis (small cells where a person can only sit or stand) as punishment.

The phenomena of prisoners and prison visitors concealing phones and other forbidden items inside their body is fairly commonplace. Hiding phones inside the body is not without its dangers though - and last June, a UK prisoner was admitted to hospital after he hid a mobile phone inside his body and was unable to expel it later. He had to have over 200 internal stitches and the doctors had to remove part of his bladder.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said at the time "It is now well established that prisoners can and do secrete mobile phones in body cavities."

source

What you're <s>cringing</s> looking at is a piece of jewelry for your eyeball. Aptly titled "The Eye Jewellery Project," artist Eric Klarenbeek threaded some medical wire through some crystals and attached it to a contact lens. I don't know about you, but feeling a thread between my eyelids every time I blink would take some getting used to. Still, you're bound to turn some heads.

Klarenbeek was asked on a video he posted on the project what would happen if someone tugged (yeee-ouch!) on the line, the artist responded, "It just falls out... (or in worst case, [sic] the wire might break)." At least it won't take your eyeball out with it!

Still with me? Well, steel your stomach and click Continue for a video of Klarenbeek's eye jewelry in action, eerily set to Nine Inch Nail's Ghosts.

No surprise that JVC is showing off their own ultra high-def 10MP wonder projector, since JVC's D-ILA tech also powers the one we saw from Meridian a few weeks ago. That means it should deliver the same stunning 4,096x2400 resolution image—it's like IMAX in your house. Or you can watch up to four full HD screens at once. The D-ILA tech, with its ridiculous pixel density, is also what lets this thing be a whole 65 percent tinier than conventional ultra HD projectors.

You can stack two to increase the light output, though it generates 3500 ANSI Lumens already. It's also got an ethernet port, so you can control multiple projectors from your PC, and receive error reports by email. Price isn't mentioned, but the Meridian setup was $185,000, so you can use your imagination.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JVC UNVEILS 10 MEGAPIXEL ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION PROJECTOR
4K2K D-ILA Projector Provides Four Times the Resolution of Full HD

Denver, CO (September 3, 2008) – JVC unveils the world's smallest 4K2K ultra high definition projector, the DLA-SH4K. Based on the company's new proprietary 1.27-inch 10 megapixel D-ILA devices, the DLA-SH4K projects images at greater than 4 times the resolution and clarity of the industry's latest full high definition projectors. The higher resolution will bring a new level of reality to aircraft simulators, medical analysis, 3D display, command and control, museums, theme parks, and ultra high-end home theaters.

The DLA-SH4K will be unveiled at CEDIA September 3 – 6, 2008 and will be on display throughout the show in the JVC Theater located at The Denver Center for the Performing Arts next to the Denver convention center.

The projector's chassis achieves a remarkable 65% reduction in size compared with conventional projectors in its class. This was achieved in part by using JVC's latest 1.27-inch Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier (D-ILA) devices and a new optical system. D-ILA is a proprietary form of Liquid Crystal on Silicone (LCOS), a reflective technology that offers far greater pixel density than competing devices.

The D-ILA devices used in the DLA-SH4K provide a native 4096 x 2400 resolution—multi-screen display modes that allow users to view up to four Full HD screens at a time. A new optical design featuring an 825 Watt Xenon lamp generates a light output of 3500 ANSI Lumens and features adjustable lamp power that ranges from 825 to 660 watts.

Two DLA-SH4Ks can be stacked for increased light output. In addition, the projector can be inclined up to a ± 90-degree tilt angle and has a horizontal lens shift of ±25% and vertical shift of ±50%, which enables flexible installation.

The DLA-SH4K includes DVI-D (dual-link) x 4 input terminals that accept a wide variety of input resolutions. In addition to the RS-232C and USB connections, an Ethernet interface makes adjustment and installation from web browsers on PCs possible. Furthermore, networking allows multiple projectors to be operated with a single PC and an email function also enables the sending out of error messages and lamp replacement reminders.

JVC will offer two lenses for the projector, the GL-MS4015SZG 1.22x zoom lens for screens up to 300 inches, and the GL-MS4011SG short throw lens for screens up to 250 inches. The DLA-SH4K is available immediately.
More than 15,000 Sprint users to benefit from additional wireless connectivity on campus

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 2008--Students, faculty, staff and visitors at Vanderbilt...

More than 15,000 Sprint users to benefit from additional wireless connectivity on campus

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 2008--Students, faculty, staff and visitors at Vanderbilt University and Medical Center (VUMC) will now have additional wireless connectivity on campus. Sprint (NYSE:S), a long-time provider of wireless services to this campus, will provide an upgrade to the existing system, including additional network coverage on both the Nationwide Sprint Network and the Nextel National Network covering eight buildings on campus, an area of 3.8 million square feet.

In 2004, Sprint installed an in-building system throughout the medical center at the university, including four CDMA and two iDEN towers on campus, a Sprint retail location on-site, and a dedicated account sales and support team housed on the campus. Advancements in technology, infrastructure modifications, and upgrades at VUMC increased the demand for additional network capability on the campus.

With the new expansion of Sprint's in-building solutions, VUMC employees and staff will have access to Sprint's suite of differentiated solutions, including Sprint Mobile Broadband, Group Connect and Nextel Direct Connect.

The Vanderbilt Office of Emergency Communications (Flight Com), which operates much like a 911 dispatch center, will use Nextel handsets to dispatch and maintain two-way communications with internally tiered emergency response teams within the medical center. Those teams include trauma, STAT, RRT and paramedics. "The Nextel Direct Connect functionality allows dispatchers to simultaneously dispatch large groups of responders and support staff," explained Jeff Gray, communications manager for Vanderbilt LifeFlight and the office of Emergency Communications. "Previously all dispatch to these teams was done by pager. Responders now have reliable two-way communications with dispatch that allows for additional directions or resources."

Employees and staff will also have access to Sprint Integrated Office, a solution used in both the hospital and other areas of the university. For example, within a hospital setting this solution is used to contact a nurse on duty. It allows the call to roll over from one nurse to another in case no one answers. The last call number in the group terminates to a desk phone, ensuring no call goes unanswered and unattended.

"Continuous and reliable communications across a large campus is key to enhanced customer experience and worker productivity, thus making wireless connectivity a huge priority," says Darlene Braunschweig, vice president, Converged Network Solutions at Sprint. "At Sprint, we understand the needs of our customers and in return offer them a portfolio of converged solutions that meet their day-to-day operational requirements. This mutual understanding is the foundation of our continued strong partnership with Vanderbilt University and Medical Center."

Sprint is a leader in providing enhanced in-building and campus-wide network consulting, integration and fixed mobile convergence solutions. Sprint designs, deploys and maintains wireless networks and mobility solutions that deliver the productivity and efficiency of voice and data communications to virtually anywhere a business and its employees need them. The Converged Network Solutions team offers 24/7 technical support and manages all stages of the customer-deployment process, from the initial requirements assessment through installation and deployment with consultant-grade methods, procedures and tools. For more information about Sprint CNS, please visit www.sprint.com/cns.

About Sprint Nextel

Sprint Nextel offers a comprehensive range of wireless and wireline communications services bringing the freedom of mobility to consumers, businesses and government users. Sprint Nextel is widely recognized for developing, engineering and deploying innovative technologies, including two wireless networks serving nearly 52 million customers at the end of the second quarter 2008; industry-leading mobile data services; instant national and international push-to-talk capabilities; and a global Tier 1 Internet backbone.
