LG Group has completed Korea's largest solar power plant in Taean, South Chungcheong Province and started producing electricity. The solar power plant with an annual power generating capacity of 19,000 MWh stands on a site measuring about 300,000 sq. m. The 14-megawatt total output capacity is enough to meet the power needs of 8,000 households around the region.

The first plant was built on 193,821 square meters of land with a nine-megawatt production size, while the second plant was constructed on a 108,154 square meter lot with five-megawatt capability

If comScore's data is to believed then the US has done the unthinkable and passed Western Europe (aka, old Europe right Donnie?) in terms of 3G adoption. 28.4% of American <s>mobile</s> cellphone subscribers north of that southern land mass with a similar sounding name now sport 3G devices compared to a measly 28.3% average for Europe's largest countries. That's an 80% surge in the US last year even though T-Mobile is still 3G-less. Man, it's like the 100-meter butterfly all over again, eh Europe?

It's official, Amazon has moved Unbox-replacement Amazon Video on Demand out of beta for Mac and PC users, while confirming rumors the still-in-beta BRAVIA Internet Video Link service is open to all Sony HDTV owners. The streaming option (you can still download and watch via Unbox on PC or TiVo, and no matter how they're purchased, content is added to the Your Video Library accessible from the web or IVL) gives Amazon that critical buy-now / watch-immediately element some other online stores lack, for its library of 40,000 licensed movies and shows. Prices start at $1.99 for single episodes shows, and at least $2.99 for movies, with savings available on season passes, now all we need to keep an eye on is the bandwidth meter.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sylvania G Netbook

Sylvania? Yeah, the light bulb people! Turns out they also make a host of consumer electronics, including TVs, monitors and even remote controls. And now Sylvania is the latest to jump into the ultra-cheap mini-notebook game. Someone should have told them to look before they leap. To be blunt, the results are ugly.

The Sylvania G Netbook is a fairly direct response to the Asus Eee PC 900 series, with an 8.9-inch screen, Linux OS and chicklet keys that make touch typing a fever dream fantasy. And while some of Sylvania's choices here are merely dreadful (the arrow keys are a mere 12mm wide — thinner than my pinky), it's actually the OS that royally blows it for the Netbook.

Ubuntu is known for being one of the most stable and simple versions of Linux on the market, but Sylvania somehow turns it into a nightmare on this system. For a computer ostensibly designed for inexperienced users, it's a disaster. I had trouble with the Ubuntu installation on the Netbook from the start: Blank screens on bootup. MPEGs wouldn't play and codec installations repeatedly failed (or even crashed the machine). Help files weren't installed. And most annoying of all, the battery meter couldn't decide whether the computer was plugged in, and pegged battery life remaining at 0 or 2 percent no matter how long we charged it. The Netbook abruptly shut itself off on at least one occasion, possibly convinced that it was out of juice.

With stability this dismal, the specs are largely irrelevant. But if you're willing to invest the time to work through the Netbook's quirks and faults, it could make a great replacement for your desk calculator. —Christopher Null

WIRED Has a real hard drive (80 GB) instead of flash storage. Includes three USB ports and an SD card reader. Comes in colors. Bright screen for this category.

TIRED Slower than a sedated slug at just about every app despite 1.6-GHz Atom chip and 1-GB RAM (standard $399 model includes just 512-MB RAM). Cartoonish styling. Considerably heavier than advertised (and the Eee PC 900) at 2.6 pounds. Far too buggy to be taken seriously.

$449 (as tested), Sylvania

Rollei rolls out X-8 Sports 8MP waterproof camera. But wait. That’s Chuck F’in Norris on the front. It was shown at the IFA show in Berlin and I’m guessing that when it takes pictures, Chuck’s fist pops out of the thing and lays the smack down. Rollei may not be a well known camera brand, but it’s a fact that it will be now thanks to Mr. Norris. I’m not sure if they have Chuck’s permission or not.

The camera is light at only 158g and it’s waterproof up to 10 meters, ready for dirt or cold weather, and is resistant to moisture. It can even take a 1 meter drop. Really is tough as Chuck and less wrinkly. Some other specs include up to 1600 ISO, 8 megapixels, and 3x optical zoom. The Rollei X-8 Sports will be officially released this September or October.

Like watching TV in the shower, bath or pool? The XDV-W600 dubbed mini-Bravia is waterproof as long as long as it is in shallow waters (3 feet / 1 meter) and for durations of less than 30 minutes. The idea is probably to have it near by the water rather than *in* the water anyways. According to Sony, it can run for 23 hours on battery, which seems like a lot for a 4″ LCD display device. 2GB of internal memory can store a small about of video, which we assume can be used for recording or possibly pausing the TV. Unfortunately it runs with 1SEG, a broadcast standard that does not exist in the U.S… More photos here

Long story short: "Even the slightest malfunction could lead to a catastrophic accident.... Each unimpeded beam is capable of melting a 500kg (1,100 lbs.) block of copper."

Here's Sally Adee's August 13, 2008 spectrum.ieee.org article about how CERN plans to stop the beam should things head south.

CERN to Start Up the Large Hadron Collider. Now Here's How It Plans to Stop It

This week, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) — the world’s most powerful particle accelerator [above] — began test runs, sending a stream of protons around a quarter of its 27-kilometer circumference. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (known as CERN), in Geneva, Switzerland, where the LHC is housed, says the tests are part of the preparations for the machine’s projected 10 September start-up date.

The experiment will hurtle two hair-thin beams of hundreds of trillions of protons around a ring-shaped accelerator at 99.99 percent the speed of light, knocking the beams together 11 000 times each second. According to CERN LHC accelerator physicist Rüdiger Schmidt, who is in charge of machine protection systems, each unimpeded beam is capable of melting a 500-kilogram block of copper.

Even the slightest malfunction could lead to a catastrophic accident, so CERN has spent nearly two decades devising an interlocking system of fail-safes. One of these is a method of safely purging a proton beam, which has a higher chance of becoming unstable the longer it is whipped around the circular accelerator. Every 10 hours the accelerator gets fresh beams. But first the old ones are dumped into specially designed absorbers called beam dump blocks.

The two beam dump blocks are located at the ends of two straight tunnels tangentially diverging from what CERN scientists refer to as Point 6 on the circular accelerator. At 15 strategically located positions around the underground accelerator tunnel, so-called kicker magnets deflect the speeding beams out of their opposing circular paths and into these tunnels.

Having been kicked out of its circular racetrack, a newly freed beam is now steered via “septum” magnets toward its beam dump. No longer constrained by the bending magnets inside the LHC tunnel, the beam travels in a straight line down the 700-meter tunnel.

Next, the 0.2-millimeter proton beam passes through 10 dilution magnets, which cause the protons to fan out until the beam has thickened to a lower-intensity diameter of 1.5 mm.

Now fattened to the width of a human hair, the beam continues down the tunnel to the beam-dump cavern. Inside waits a cylindrical block of a dense, absorptive graphite composite that is 8 meters long and 0.7 meters in diameter [below].

The 10-ton graphite cylinder is encased in 1000 metric tons of steel and concrete. Why not just make the whole thing out of lead or another heavy metal? It turns out that graphite is the only material whose low density and high melting point can resist the ravages of the proton beam. In experiments, researchers found that an 86-microsecond exposure of the beam would bore a hole 40 meters into a block of copper.

Even though the beam’s damage potential has now been reduced by its increased girth, the beam would still handily eat through the graphite composite cylinder. So instead of letting it burn a single 1.5-mm-wide hole into the cylinder, CERN engineers designed the system to “scan” the beam onto the face of the cylinder, much as the electron beam is scanned in a cathode-ray-tube television screen. To ensure that the intense beam never lingers too long in one place, it is scanned as a pattern — which vaguely resembles the letter e [below]

— onto the cylinder.

Though the graphite beam dump becomes very hot (about 750 °C), it does not melt. In fact, after it cools down it can be reused a few hours later.
....................

Impressed by the NEC EA261WM's frog-displaying abilities but think it's about four inches too much for you? Then good news! NEC has now introduced the MultiSync EA221WM, which boasts many of the same "premium" features in a slightly more desk-friendly 22-inch size. That includes a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, a 5 ms response time, a four port USB 2.0 hub, and NEC's trademark ECO Mode and carbon footprint meter, to name a few, although you will have to make do with a drop to 250 cd/m² brightness, and a 1680 x 1050 resolution instead of the full 1,920 x 1,200 on the 26-inch model. On the upside, the EA221WM's $390 price tag is a good deal more affordable than that of its larger counterpart, and you'll be able to get your hands on it sometime this month.
