NEW YORK (Reuters) - Visa Inc (V.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) plans to offer services to phones powered by Google Inc's (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Android including alerts when your credit card has been used.

The credit card network also said in October, No. 1 mobile phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) would start selling the 6212 phone, which users could wave at an electronic reader to make payments and use for remote payments and money transfers.

Visa said it was still developing its application to allow in-store "contactless" payments by cell phone for Android.

But it said these services --- already common in countries such as Japan -- may not take off for years here as U.S. stores would need to install new card readers and cell phones with the corresponding technology would need to be in wider use.

In the meantime, Visa said on Thursday that it would offer transaction alerts and discount offers from merchants to Android users. The application will also work with Google maps and location technology to help users find nearby cash machines and stores where special offers are available.

Visa said that for the first few months, the application will be available just to Android phone users who also have Visa cards issued by JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) banks. It plans to open the application to other banks in 2009.

Earlier this week, Google unveiled the first Android-powered phone, which HTC Corp (2498.TW: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is making and Deutsche Telekom's (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) T-Mobile [TMOG.UL] unit is selling.

But the initial Android device does not include hardware to support contactless credit card payments.

Tim Attinger, Visa's global head of product development, said that while mobile payment services have been slow to take off, the company sees mobile phones as key to adding new customers. Only 1.6 billion Visa cards are in use today, compared with more than 3 billion people with cell phones.

"We're absolutely going to start porting financial services into those," Attinger said.

LONDON (Reuters) - Nokia's answer to Apple's iPhone will go on sale in seven countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe this year but will miss the Christmas shopping season in most developed markets.

The first touch-screen phone from the world's top mobile phone maker will go on sale in India, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia and Spain by year-end.

The Nokia 5800 will cost 279 euros ($387) before operator subsidies and taxes, substantially less than the iPhone.

"The phone is competitively priced and Nokia's competitive advantage is in emerging markets. When putting two and two together it's logical they start the roll-out from emerging markets," said analyst Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics.

The research firm expects Nokia to ship more than 10 million touch-screen phones next year.

But JP Morgan analyst Ehud Gelblum said he had hoped the 5800 would be in shops in developed markets by Christmas.

"This is disappointing as we had expected the device to be shipping in the critical holiday season for most developed countries," he wrote in a note published on Friday.

Spurred by Apple, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have already rolled out touch-screen phones over the last two years, mostly in developed markets.

Nokia said its schedule was similar to that for many other phones, adding that customizing the phone's software for operators in other markets would take some time.

The touch user interface makes such adjustments more complex than for other types of phone.

The website of British operator O2 in the "coming soon for sale" was a picture and description of the communicator XDA Zest. This machine is running an operating system Windows Mobile, following a form-factor besklaviaturnogo monoblock. Among its features - wireless Wi-Fi, built GPS-receiver, 5-MP camera, 4 GB internal memory, expansion slot and support networks of 3G. Presumably, O2 XDA Zest is based on a hardware platform ASUS Galaxy7 (we have seen this device in the news), at least, communicators are very similar in characteristics. While the design version of the operator O2 is significantly different from the original model.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SOu3q9EbUHI/AAAAAAAA-dU/FvRl39h8vJE/s320/oo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254495338833334386" />

Last week Nokia unveiled its much anticipated Comes with Music (CwM) proposition, whereby Nokia will bundle a phone with unlimited music downloads for a year. While Nokia also unveiled the 5800 XpressMusic phone, its flagship CwM device and its first handset with a touch screen, what was notable at the launch was the absence of its mobile operator partners, according to Ovum.

Nokia CwM devices combine a mobile phone with a year's free unlimited subscription to the CwM store. At the end of the contract, consumers can keep all the downloaded music, continue the service if they upgrade their phone, or buy a la carte from the Nokia Music Store.

Ovum analysts Adam Leach and Mark Little commented that Nokia has been bullish with its launch of CwM. Although its target audience of young music enthusiasts rely on operator-subsidised handsets, don't have credit cards and can't afford OTA downloads without flat-rate data plans, Nokia is not waiting for operator support on the ground. Perhaps Nokia surmises that it is this very bullishness that will push the operators into supporting a music service in direct competition with their own.

Nokia's new music service may eventually be seen by consumers as an exciting revolution that lowers the cost of exploring and discovering a sizeable choice of music. However, it currently risks being seen by operators as a disruption to business as usual with their most important handset provider.

CwM phones will be offered at a premium that is shared with the music labels. However, if operators have to absorb or heavily subsidise the phones it will cost them dearly; if not the cost will be dropped in the laps of credit-strapped youngsters.

Nokia emphasises that CwM has value and is not free, and as such generates income for artists and the music industry. The business model pays out a share of handset sales to labels and artists that is in proportion to that of downloads, plus limited supplementary payments over certain download levels.

This protects Nokia's margins from bored teens with too much time and a spare terabyte or two, but not from the bandwidth charges that a highly successful CwM service could create. That said, Liz Schimel, Nokia's head of music services and software, is confident that the CwM service will make a profit for Nokia and the labels.

Nokia announces its first touch-screen phone: the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

At launch three Nokia phones will come with music: the new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the Nokia N95 8GB and the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. The 5800 will be the flagship device for the CwM service and will be available in the fourth quarter of 2008 at a cost of about US$378 (before subsidies); however, its initial launch will be limited to seven countries: Spain, Russia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.

Nokia intends the 5800 to be a global phone, and other territories will follow shortly including major European markets. The time lag to get the phone launched in other European markets is due to the time taken to produce operator variants for the device, hinting that mobile operators will be offering the CwM service to their customers.

For a mid-tier non-N-Series device, the 5800 is well specified. Aside from the 640×360 touch screen, which is enabled through a new release of the S60 platform, some of its highlights include: HSDPA, WLAN, A-GPS, Bluetooth, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with dual-LED flash, stereo surround sound speakers, TV out, an accelerometer, proximity sensor and haptic feedback. This feature set represents great value for money for the consumer at a little over half the price of the Apple iPhone 3G (before operator subsidies).

Moreover, if the CwM proposition remains at the £129.95 (US$176) price point when bundled with the 5800 then for a little over the price of an iPod Nano the consumer gets a music player, a 3G phone and unlimited music for a year.

Nokia 5800 together with S60 5th edition SDK should encourage greater participation from third-party developers

Nokia's use of its S60 platform to power the 5800, together with its mass-market positioning, is an attempt by Nokia to motivate a greater number of developers to build third-party applications and services for its devices.

S60 5th edition is compatible with the previous S60 3rd edition; this gives developers an addressable market of approximately 60 million devices. Despite this significant installed base of S60 devices, Nokia has yet to leverage its full potential. There have been approximately 6,000 applications written for S60 since its first release back in 2001.

This can be compared directly to 3,000 applications written for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (with over 10 million downloads) since its launch in July of this year. Apple has achieved significant developer momentum for the iPhone in a short period of time, and this momentum is driving both demand and revenues for Apple. The 5800 and other mass-market devices, together with its recently announced strategy to provide S60 on an open source basis through the Symbian Foundation, should help Nokia achieve greater developer momentum for its platform."

This is the traffic control center at TomTom. Here they check on the information they send out, and monitor the information 24/7 including what’s coming in, how it is processed, and what’s being sent out to the customers.

They have several levels of redundancy in hardware in case failures and they also have pre-production machines.

Video explains how the traffic information is controlled at this center and what the end users see and how they can interpret the data.

It even shows in real time how certain traffic incidents were being sent to the customers.

HD Traffic and IQ routes is combined from four sources. Mobile phone networks, TomTom customers, TomTom work data, and governmental data and it has a fine resolution of 15 minutes for each day of the week.

Everything you need to know about TomTom HD Traffic; just watch it… thanks Dawid.
