While few audiophiles have even heard of Professional Home Cinema, this Huntington Beach CA company makes the kind of speakers you might find in Tom Cruise's home theater. Using the same type of horn technology you'll find in commercial theaters, the systems are actively driven using thousands of watts of digital amplifier power. Here designer L Paul Hales stands next to a new model that could probably be used for building demolition. During a demonstration at the Denver Athletic Club during CEDIA, Hales used the much smaller SCR-15s to shake and rattle everything that wasn't tied down on the third floor of the club. Despite that smaller model's 130 decibel capability, the sound was amazingly clear and undistorted. Price? Think upper five figures for a 5.1 channel surround rig.

Apparently, not only is Sony's fancy new full-frame DSLR -- the A900 -- showing up in ad leaks all across the interblogs, but it's been caught with its lens cover down in real life. An eagle-eyed forum poster managed to snag shots of what appear to be the camera in action, taken in Belgium this August doing what it does best... snapping pictures. There's not much more to say, but this should thoroughly wet your whistle for the model's forthcoming introduction, which we can only imagine will be happening sometime around the upcoming Photokina.

[Via Digital Photography Review; Thanks, Douglas]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Some would call this a shakedown, charging $30 to remove all the bloatware that comes preinstalled on a computer. I call it a public service, even though it’s at a price.

But Best Buy is doing it, sensing a potential revenue stream from frustrated computer users who hate the endless plethora of demo software and AOL installations that are damn near impossible to remove without an MSCE degree. I mean, other than serious cheap skates and those who already own a copy of Vista, who won’t jump at the chance to add another $30 to the bill for a clean computer? I know I would if I bought computers in a brick and mortar anymore.

Best Buy isn’t the first company to offer such a service. Sony announced earlier in the year a premium charge to ship their Vaio laptops without what they termed as “extra-ware.” And that’s a great thing. It means that computer manufacturers and retail companies are listening to their customers and giving them the choice of having a clean machine, even if it’s at an extra charge. But just consider it an upgraded model.

Now if we could only get them to sell PCs without Windows and OSX installe instead.

LG has more or less finished their sequel to the Prada, unimaginatively known as the Prada II. This model will come with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard in addition to the following specifications (something we lacked in our earlier post) :-

Quad-band GSM/EDGE, dual-band HSDPA (850MHz/2100MHz) 950mAh battery 240×400 3.0? screen 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash and VGA recording Bluetooth 2.1 connectivityWi-Fi connectivityInfineon MP-EH + M180 chipset Motion sensor FM radio

Hopefully the operating system is something worth using, as the iPhone has already proven - hardware specifications aren’t as important as the user experience and ease-of-use, just take a look at the DS Lite.

Buffalo wants to lay claim to owning the first external solid state USB drive in the world - the MicroStation. This tiny storage device will come in 32GB, 64GB and 100GB capacities, connecting to your computer through USB 2.0 that is wrapped around its body neatly when not in use. It has a maximum data transfer speed of 35MB/s, measuring a bag friendly 89mm x 57mm x 14mm. Guess you won’t have any worries of your data inside getting corrupted whenever you drop the MicroStation, eh? The pricing might cause people to stay away still though, since the 32GB model will go for £115, while the 64GB and 100GB models will retail for £230 and £344, respectively.

Epson has lifted the curtain on three new LCD projectors at the CEDIA expo that support 1080p resolution for all your high definition needs. The three projectors would be the PowerLite Home Cinema 6100, PowerLite Pro Cinema 7100 and Pro Cinema 7500 UB. The flagship Pro Cinema 7500 UB is Epson’s pride and joy, featuring the following :-

75,000:1 dynamic contrast ratioC2Fine software and FineFrame technology12-bit 3LCD driver 2.35 or 2.4 aspect ratio viewing

The remaining two projectors are less capable, although that doesn’t mean they aren’t good enough for the average home. The Pro Cinema 7100 comes with a 18,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1,800 lumens of brightness and a Day and Night mode. As for the PowerLite Home Cinema 6100, that model boasts a 18,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a Dynamic Iris system and a 200W lamp. All three models will feature a trio of HDMI 1.3a inputs, S-Video, composite and VGA connectivity. You can pick up the PowerLite Home Cinema 6100, Pro Cinema 7100 and 7500 UB for $1,999, $3,000 and $4,500, respectively.
