Blackbird Guitars is now selling a nylon-stringed version of their Rider, unibody, carbon fiber guitar that is slightly larger than the steel-stringed original. The "Rider Nylon" is just as pretty as its predecessor — and someday I'll actually play one to find out how they feel.

The Blackbird Rider Nylon starts at $1,900.

In the mobile space, there’s no such thing as too many megapixels, too much display resolution, too much storage space, or too much processing power. Mobile phones are starting to become more powerful than computers of just a couple handfuls of years ago, and we’re slowly seeing more and more smartphones with spec-sheets that read like they belong to budget laptops. Case in point, the ASUS P565 Windows Mobile smarpthone.

We had heard rumors that ASUS was working on a VGA touchscreen smartphone with an industry-leading 800Mhz processor powering a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional platform, but we weren’t holding our collective breath for ASUS to make this monster of a smartphone a reality. Well, ASUS has gone live with the ASUS P565 Windows Mobile smartphone on their website - color us pleasantly surprised!

As expected, the ASUS P565 smartphone boasts an impressive 2.8-inch VGA (480×640) touchscreen display that should make for some fun times with ASUS’s Windows Mobile wrapper, the Glide UI. Packed inside is a GPS receiver, WiFi radio, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, and a 3 megapixel camera - ensuring that even the most demanding mobile enthusiasts can have their cake and eat it, too.

But, the ASUS P565’s most noteworthy feature is that class-leading 800MHz Marvell CPU working in tandem with the 128MB RAM and 256MB ROM. It’s only a matter of time before cellphone processors break through the 1Ghz speed barrier. And, until that time, the ASUS P565 will be the fastest, most powerful Windows Mobile smartphone on market. Unfortunately, the tri-band (900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio and the single-band (2100Mhz) 3G HSDPA radio will keep the ASUS P565 from burning up CPU cycles in the US.

To recap, with transfer speeds of 4.8Gbps, it'll dump a 25GB HD file in about 70 seconds, and the architecture has been beefed up with extra data lanes to make for more sustained, rather than bursty transfer speeds, making it better for camcorders and the like. Even though it delivers more power than USB 2.0 to charge gadgets faster (and it'll revive a completely dead one too), its new polling architecture makes it more efficient.

The one bad bit of news is that your old USB cables won't deliver SuperSpeeds—you'll have to have USB 3.0 gear from end-to-end to get the ridiculous transfer rates because the cables have extra pins for data, though it is all backward compatible. On the cable front you've got three plugs: Standard A (which looks like the one you know and love), standard B (the square one), mini B (which looks like a bizarre double-headed monster) and micro. We should start seeing the first USB 3.0-equipped gadgets sometime in 2010, though mayyyybe by the end of 2009 if we're lucky.

MID – Mobile Internet Device. Small pocket-sized computers running desktop-type applications and with a full suite of connectivity options. The M528 is a MID. Intel seems to be very keen about MIDs at the moment, and it seems that they are the next great thing. Mind you, Nokia has been quietly punting them out for a few years now in the shape of the N770, N800 and N810 internet tablets (all Linux devices). I was keen to see how the M528 compared against the venerable Nokia’s because it terms of specification it blows them away.

What's in the box?

Gigabyte M528 MID

Li-ion rechargeable battery

Charger

USB cable

General

Before I delve into reviewing the M528 in any depth I think it’s important to highlight the fact that this would appear to be a pre-production release model. Why do I think this? The unit came without any manual, documentation, software CD or indeed a retail box. I will also confess to being a fan and user of Nokias internet tablet so, it was natural that I judge the M528 against them.

My first reaction upon opening the box was “It’s just like a Nokia N810”. It could easily be mistaken for one such is the close resemblance. The M528 is a bit bigger all round and a fair bit heavier, but nevertheless it screams N810. It’s an exceedingly well specified and good looking device. In terms of hardware it presses all the buttons: large, bright and sharp display; proper USB ports; fast cpu; plenty of memory; a slide-out keyboard; memory slot; a sim card slot for 3G connectivity; big battery…… Portable computing heaven - if this is the way forward then count me in.

For a flavour of what the device is like see Matt’s recent unboxing:

http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php?blog=2&paged=2

Like the Nokia internet tablets it runs a form of Linux – in this case Midinux. Linux is eminently suitable for MIDs with its low overheads and hardware requirements. Linux is also highly customisable and has wonderful community support, so I was somewhat perturbed to discover that this particular flavour is crippled and lacking in functionality – more later.

Controls

The M528 has been thoughtfully provided with a number of connection options and some sensibly positioned controls

Top: Camera shutter release, 3.5mm headphone jack, std USB port, volume up/down switch, microSD card slot, mini USB port.

Gigabyte M528 Top View

Bottom: Power jack, Power switch

Gigabyte M528 bottom View

Front: TFT screen, slide-out keyboard, smart key for quick access to certain applications

Gigabyte M528 front view

Back: Speaker, battery/SIM cover, camera lens, reset hole. The version of Linux installed does not seem to correspond with the published spec’s and the review unit carried no statutory approval stamps or markings.

The M528 is a compact unit with a dense feel to it in the hand. Although not much bigger than a Nokia N800, it is substantially heavier and trying to carry this in your trouser pocket will result in one’s trousers trying to make a break for freedom. Like the N810 I recently reviewed, the M528 has a slide out keyboard. It’s a little bit creaky when being handled and when the keyboard slides out it feels a bit loose. The keyboard itself is a membrane type which, although lacking in good tactile feedback (they’re all like that) makes entering text much easier than relying on a stylus. Therefore, it is surprising to find that the bundled software includes very little that can make use of the keyboard. There is no word processor or e-mail client.

Connecting to a wireless network proved to be very frustrating. Despite entering the correct credentials of my network it would not connect until I made my network visible. “Ah-ha!”, I thought….”now we have a connection let’s make it invisible again for security purposes”. The M528 had other ideas. As soon as I did that the M528 dropped the connection. Once the connection had been dropped then the unit promptly forgot the connection details! In order to connect again it was necessary to make my network visible and then go through the entire process of entering the connection info again. The unit would also sporadically drop connection. Now I am an exponent and a user of Linux, but I was fairly unimpressed that getting a connection was so difficult – normally it’s child’s play and my Nokian N800 is simply leagues ahead in this respect.

Once I had got a connection I fired up the Coolfox web browser. This appeared to be a cut down version of Firefox. In use it proved to be speedy and smooth – it was a delight to use and quite a revelation on the beautiful 4.8” screen. Certainly, the user experience blew my N800 away when it came to browsing – in fact it felt just like using Firefox on a good laptop. Until it crashed that is. As intimated, the suite of applications installed is very limited. There was a media player, but it would not run whilst Coolfox was running for some unfathomable reason – a pop-up dialogue appears telling you so when you try.

The battery was a 3.7v/2700mAh Li-Polymer item (the spec’ claims 3060mAh). This capacity seemed to be plentiful even with the screen backlighting set to near maximum. The battery itself is a monster. Given the discrepancy between the published specification and the actual item in use it would be unfair to draw any conclusions regarding battery life, but I can say it never actually bothered me. So that must be good and the bigger specced item must be even better, right?

Conclusion:

The M528 has a lot of promise as does the entire class of MIDs. I’ve long been an advocate of the MID form factor (or internet tablet). Unfortunately, the M528 as reviewed was highly buggy, devoid of any means of software updates, it was not possible to add extra software, configure it or indeed do very much with it. For this reason it is difficult to draw any conclusions about it. At the time of writing non of the usual retailers actually list the machine as available and in stock so, I am really hoping that devices customers purchase are much more functional and complete. For the time being though, I cannot recommend the device in its current state. Work in progress I would say.

Review by: Nigel

[ Post Tags: Gigabyte, UMPC, Laptop, tablet pc, M528, tracyandmatt.co.uk ]

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Melbourne, Australia and Espoo, Finland - Mega Monsters, the latest N-Gage game from Nokia Games Publishing, introduces players to the biggest monster smash on mobile. The result of a mad scientist combining his supply of adorable animals, a borrowed gene splicer and a surplus government nuclear reactor, each Mega Monster provides an evil blend of cute and killer. With the intuitive one thumb control, players direct the Mega Monster of their choice to do what monsters do best - destroy!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 113px; height: 152px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SR2ohjDvd1I/AAAAAAAA_8Y/ZcbB2dKNSf8/s320/me1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268552433393432402" />

"Mega Monsters is made for those of us who love monsters and who like nothing more than stomping through buildings and crunching a few tanks and helicopters along the way," said Dr Mark Ollila, Director, Games Publishing, Nokia. "The 3D graphics and fully destructible environment let you set your inner monster loose and smash through city after city. Exciting game personalization options help create a cruch-tastic game that will be hard to put down. Mega Monsters is going to be the biggest monster smash on mobile."

Mega Monsters features rich 3D graphics with a fully destructible environment where players can destroy anything in their path. While on the rampage, players must ensure their Mega Monster destroys selected targets and can pick up dozens of special items, including clothing and other items, to add character to their creature. Each Mega Monster develops its abilities, powers and appearance as it progresses through different missions, and can also gain new powers by hooking up with other Mega Monsters.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 142px; height: 142px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SR2og433wxI/AAAAAAAA_8Q/bqm61aC0Jf4/s320/me.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268552422069355282" />

Players can stomp and smash through a series of existing city environment or they can create their own map and challenge others to beat it by uploading it to the N-Gage Arena. Players can also customize their game by taking a photo to use on an in-game billboard.

Mega Monsters is being developed in collaboration with Firemint, a leading Australian independent games studio with a particular focus on designing and developing high-end 3D titles for portable media devices. Firemint is an International Mobile Gaming Award winner for Excellence in 3D.

About N-Gage
N-Gage is a made-for-mobile games service available in compatible Nokia Nseries and other S60 3rd Edition devices from Nokia. While WoW is the most popular of the genre, there are some other notably popular games that offer MMORPG gamers alternatives and one of the most interesting is Age of Conan.

Funcom announced a new (and free) update to Age of Conan this week that adds a new outdoor area called Ymir’s Pass. The update also adds new quests, new characters, new monsters, and a new storyline for gamers to enjoy.

The update adds a large new dungeon called The Amphitheater that Funcom says holds one of the most memorable monster encounters designed for the game. The free update is available now to all subscribers and will be downloaded automatically when the game is launched. Funcom says that more updates are coming for Age of Conan that will add more weapons, areas, and new adventures.
