There's this thing called "Black Friday," and it's some kind of shopping day, right? And everything, everywhere, is cheap! You have to fistfight young mothers to get at the deals, but it's totally worth it. And Target, everyone's favorite friendlier version of Walmart, leaked some deals of their own. They've got an external 750GB USB 2.0 drive from WD for (puzzlingly) $88.88, an 8GB iPod nano with a $15 gift card for $145. Even more highlights after the jump.

My picks:

- Super Mario Bros. DS package: $150
- Garmin nuvi 200W GPS: $120
- Westinghouse 26" HDTV: $300
- Guitar Hero World Tour (Guitar Kit) for Wii: $60
- and of course, the Hello Kitty Hide 'N Fun Elite Indoor Play Tent is on sale for only $14 (!!!!) Last week's Switched On delved into Celio's REDFLY, an austere smartphone accessory designed for enterprise users who manage their digital lives on their smartphones. REDFLY has faced scrutiny from the geek elite who have noted that, for about the same price as a REDFLY, one can get an independently functioning netbook that does so much more. A similar argument has also been levied at Peek, a wireless e-mail appliance that delivers only a part of what most smartphones can do.

But the two products could hardly be more different. Whereas REDFLY is a smartphone companion, Peek is a smartphone alternative featuring a slim design and a commitment to simplicity that borders on obsession. For example, Peek, like many modern smartphones, will attempt to guess your mail server information by your e-mail address. But if your e-mail address stumps it, there is no way to enter a server name or IP address manually. This omission is intentional, according to Peek, which didn't want consumers to have to find out technical settings. Instead, customers are directed to contact the company's support line where a customer service representative will set up the account for them.

The approach is in lockstep with the device's target market -- busy and less technical consumers, particularly young mothers, who find themselves increasingly dependent on e-mail and don't want the complexity of a smartphone or the high cost of running one on a 3G network. Peek provides an alternative to a growing movement within the cellular industry to force minimal data plans on advanced phones. And for consumers who find carrier stores less than inviting, Peek is sold at Target, and it works.
Continue reading Switched On: The Peek of popularity

Switched On: The Peek of popularity originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 17:49:00 EST. Got $110,000 burning a hole in your golden pants pocket? How about sharing the wealth with your favorite blogger? Damnit, no, not The Superficial Writer. That guy's a dick. No, not Iwatchstuff either. I was talking about yours truly, folks. Way to kick a guy in the fucking head while he's bent over to tie his shoe. Now I don't even want your money. Just kidding, I totally do. All of it. Stick 'em up! Jewelry too. Anyway the KEF Muon speakers are each milled from a solid piece of aluminum and take a week to make. And allegedly they sell for $110,000. Which is $1,000 times ninety-something. For speakers. But if you're seriously interested, call me, I'm an authorized dealer -- of kicking your rich ass!

Giving birth in a warm water bath is much more popular in Europe and Asia than in the USA, and most mothers in this country who choose a waterbirth, deliver their babies at home in a bathtub. While specialized birthing tubs have been around for a while, this new design from Darling Dushinka looks like the Rolls-Royce of waterbirth vessels. With an adjustable seat, warm massage jets, an overhead grab bar, and even a seat in the tub for the expectant father, this tub makes it easy to have a comfortable waterbirth within the safety of a hospital.

Operator Chooses ACCESS™ Solution for New Mobile Widgets Service

Tokyo, Japan, – ACCESS CO., LTD., a global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile and beyond-PC markets, announced that its comprehensive Widget solution, NetFront™ Browser Widgets, has been selected by SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. to implement the operator’s new Mobile Widgets service.

SOFTBANK MOBILE will launch the service in Japan in late November, together with its first Mobile Widgets-capable handset, the SOFTBANK 931SH from Sharp Corporation.

Widgets are mini applications that are downloaded and then displayed in small GUI windows on the screen of a handset. Content providers can leverage on a development environment based on open, standard W3C Widget 1.0 specifications, facilitating development of Widget content.

Following the release of its 931SH handset, SOFTBANK MOBILE plans to roll out a succession of handsets that support Mobile Widgets. ACCESS will extend its support by offering Mobile Widgets-compatible content on its NetFront Browser Widgets Community Site.

“ACCESS is committed to enhancing user convenience by promoting the creation of innovative Widget services and content,” said Toru Arakawa, CEO, president and co-founder of ACCESS. “ACCESS’ comprehensive Widget solution for operators will help make it faster and easier for content providers to bring exciting new mobile applications to market.”

About ACCESS
ACCESS CO., LTD. is a global company providing leading technology, software products and platforms for Web browsing, mobile phones, wireless handhelds, and other networked devices. It's bad enough that I live thousands of miles away: when her birthday or Christmas rolls around, requests for lists are ignored with a sweet, martyrish shrug: "But I've already been blessed with a son like you!" Subtext: if you can't find something heartfelt for your dear, aged mother of your own accord, you're an asshole. And needless to say, every year, I am proven one, to a greater or lesser extent.

So this year I was delighted that she actually approached me with a wish list a month or so before her birthday rolled around. And nuzzled in the middle of the list, something both practical and strangely wonderful: the dear, aged woman — who hobbles about her garden on a cane with a stroke a year or two back, full of pluck and vim — wanted one of these wonderful ice prong cane tips for the glacial New England winter. They come in two varieties: either with a single, penetrating tip, ideal for staking any ice vampires that might stumble across her path, or a more gripping five prong system. Better yet, they just pop on and off, to prevent linoleum gouging.

Very neat. I love the fact that that creative ingenuity even extends to cane accessories for inclement weather.

Today we reach some immense numbers of overall 30 percents cases in the United States of America, when doctors and near future parents decide on a C-section. As the matter of fact, many of them, approximately a half of mothers didn't need one. Caesarean section is necessary only when a number of complexifications are faced. Otherwise it provides unjustified risk on mother's health and on health of her child. To give a clearer word whether C-section is necessary in every particular case, a group of researchers from University of Florida in Gainesville have recently came up with an interesting gadget.
