A new LG device has been spotted at the FCC’s website. The “VC” prefix clearly suggests we’re going to see this baby hitting the Verizon’s portfolio, and from what we can tell it will be an interesting phone, especially for the youth.

Not much is known at this stage, however we do see a presence of 3-inch 480×240 screen, a “game pad” of some sort and a detachable QWERTY keyboard. Is Verizon about to introduce a heavy texter’s dream phone or what? Plus, let’s not forget all the games you’ll be able to play on that gorgeous screen. We’re watching this one, have no doubt about it…

The XP-loaded Mini 9 costs £299 and features an 8.9in screen, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB solid state drive. There’s also integrated Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel webcam and 802.11b/g wireless. An Ubuntu version is on its way for £269.

Not bad specs, and I’d love to see how the build quality is - some of the earlier “netbooks” from other manufacturers had somewhat less-than-optimal build, but I would bet on the Dell device being rock solid - and £299 is cheap as chips (well, nearly)!

The iPhone seems to be the sexy choice for the new touch screen smart phone market, but there are alternatives to the iPhone. AT&T along with Mac started this new trend by revolutionizing cell phones. Not to be outdone Verizon, Sprint and other major carries have come out with their own phones to act as alternatives to the iPhone. The Samsung Instinct on the Sprint network is the first one that comes to mind. This phone seems to be the closest to the iPhone as far as popularity goes. Features include voice activated navigation, easy web browsing and a plan that costs $100 for unlimited everything. That means unlimited talk, web, text–everything! That is a very popular feature that the iPhone does not offer.

Next you may think of the LG Dare, exclusive through the Verizon network. This phone is unique because it has a sensor in it that tells if you are holding it vertically or horizontally. A true standout feature with this phone is the 3.2 megapixel camera, which is amongst the best for camera phones.

BlackBerry is even on the verge of releasing the BlackBerry “Thunder” or it could be known as the Blackberry 9500 when it becomes available to the public. When this phone hits the market it will simply add to the amount of phones that could act as alternatives to the iPhone. The new BlackBerry will sport a hybrid CDMA/EV-DO. It may even come with a 4G LTE component. Verizon and Vondaphone stand to be the exclusive carriers of this impressive looking phone.

Rest assured that there will only be more and more alternatives showing up on the market. Cell phones have seen a new day and the iPhone had the largest contribution to this trend. Just like the Motorola StarTac was the first created the flip phone. A trend that saw a near end to standard phones that were, at the time, the only game in town. Boy how times have changed.

The company Motorola announced that REDtone, a leading Malaysian provider of telecommunication services and solutions put into operation first in East Malaysia broadband network WiMAX. This network is built on technology Motorola. The first phase of WiMAX network covers business districts Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri. It is targeted at corporate users and supports data processing systems and high-speed Internet access.

To expand the range of services, broadband Internet access in Eastern Malaysia REDtone management company decided to build a new network technology based on WiMAX, benefiting from the fixed network for speed and cost of deployment. Motorola Company, in collaboration with REDtone ensure supply and installation of equipment WiMAX 2,3 GHz in basic points, as well as the installation of subscriber terminals (CPE), required for the broadband Internet access in major business centers in the first phase of the project.

In addition to broadband access for corporate customers, the company REDtone also plans to start cooperation with providers in the regions of Sabah and Sarawak to provide broadband access to consumers. Insufficient capacity of modern networks has meant that during periods of peak speed transfer of data from the Internet becomes very low. The new WiMAX network will increase overall capacity networks in these regions, increase customer satisfaction and create additional opportunities for business development REDtone and local providers.

At this time, Motorola has 20 contracts for construction of commercial WiMAX networks in 17 countries around the world.

Motorola has unveiled a new MOTOJEWEL clamshell phone, designed specifically with the female fashionista in mind. The device comes with its own mini clutch handbag, which has just space for the handset, a credit card, and a lipstick. Apparently, MOTO thinks that’s about everything a modern girl needs when she’s going out.

Specs wise, the MOTOJEWEL sports a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support, and a music player. It comes with the so called “midnight quartz” exterior color scheme and has a purple keypad inside.

The MOTOJEWEL will be available only for a limited time starting in November through Carphone Warehouse.

In this week's Gadget Lab Podcast, Dylan Tweney, Daniel Dumas, and Brian Chen talk about the newest TiVo on the block, the 1-terabyte HD XL. With 150 hours of HD content and THX certified audio, the player packs heat, but it might be a bit too pricey for regular folks. Not only that, but the massive capacity might create a wacked-out zombie, or two.

In addition, they review a strange little email-only device called the Peek. The main impression: The device is too simple for its own good, especially since every other gadget with email can also do other things. Tech-friendly grandmas would be embarrassed walking around with it.

Finally, they'll discuss the most recent lawsuit against Apple, brought on by a retired Chicken of the Sea executive (no joke). The suit states that Apple's advertising claims are not only misleading, but also false and improper for such a high-rising gadget.
