In addition to a whopping 95% increase in awesomeness, the uniforms will feature a number of other technical enhancements, including a multifunction helmet with video transmitter, GPS display and voice recognition, a backpack with command / control and friendly-or-foe identification systems, a BDU that offers protection from nuclear, biological and chemical attacks, and the laser-guided, multi-function XK11 assault rifle, which shoots both standard NATO 5.56mm rounds and 20mm grenades. Did the future just get way cooler, or way scarier? Or both? We're not sure. But you can check that gun out yourself in the video after the break.

Continue reading South Korea to develop new high-tech battle uniform - Halo fans approve wholeheartedly

South Korea to develop new high-tech battle uniform - Halo fans approve wholeheartedly originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 13:02:00 EST.
Companies are trying to reduce the amount of printing to a minimum. This is not primarily because of environmental concerns but because of economics. Printing a color page, or even using a color copier, is expensive. What is often overlooked is the impact printers have on the environment.

The cost issue is being addressed by companies like Xerox who have programs wherein they supply printers free of cost and charge only a minimal amount per color page printed. This charge is as low a $0.08 per page, which makes printing under this program the cheapest option available. With the costs reduced offices can now print as much as operational efficiencies require. But these increased print volumes do not have a negative environmental impact if the printers are using Solid Ink Technology.

A conventional laser printer uses toner or ink to print on a page. A color laser printer is actually four printers in one. To produce color images the printer needs to be able to combine Black, Yellow, Magenta and Cyan. This means four separate toner cartridges. And once the cartridge is empty it is junk. The cartridges are not biodegradable so they become pure waste.

Solid ink technology uses a wax based stick of solid ink instead of a toner in a cartridge. The wax melts and is used for printing. Once the ink stick is used up, there is no case or container to dispose of - another stick just has to be inserted in the printer. So no solid waste is produced. Solid ink printers do not produce ozone to pollute the air, like Phaser printers do.

Don’t think that because solid ink technology printers are environmentally friendly, they are less efficient than other printers. A printer like the like the Phaser 8560 can churn out 30 pages per minute of top quality color pages. In fact, Xerox says the solid ink produces more brilliant colors than toner based printers.

Solid ink printers are not just environmentally better, they are more economical to use than other printers, especially if a free printer program is opted for and are heavy use multifunction devices.

Author, Ryan Perry, has been in the printer/copier market for 12+ years as a reseller for a number of manufactures including HP, Samsung and Xerox. Today Ryan owns and operates Go2printgreen.com, educating businesses on the environmental advantages of solid ink technology.

The new bio-based plastic, which includes more than 25 percent (by weight) a plant-derived component, will be used in exterior plastic parts for Canon multifunction office systems to be launched beginning next year. Compared with conventional petroleum-based plastics used in multifunction office systems, the new bio-based plastic developed by Canon and Toray offers an expected reduction in manufacturing-related CO2 emissions of approximately 20 percent. The development of the new bio-based plastic will enable its use not only for select parts in multifunction office systems, but also for replacing petroleum-based plastics used for exterior parts, which require a high level of flame retardance.

Plant-derived bio-based plastics, which curb increases in CO2 and decrease the consumption of oil resources, offer material properties that effectively reduce environmental burden. Beginning next year, Canon intends to introduce multifunction office systems that incorporate the newly developed bio-based plastic, with initial plans to use approximately 100 tons of the material per year.

Wireless network-friendly phone systems take communication to a higher level for incredible sound clarity. The KX-TG5432M 5.8 GHz GigaRange system uses frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology and operates on a different wavelength with much less traffic than 2.4 GHz phones to give enhanced range, security, and clarity. The multi-handset cordless phone system is ideal for large families and home offices.

Features:

- 5.8 GHz frequency-hopping digital spread spectrum technology (FHSS) for minimal interference, clear sound, and all the advantages of digital
- One additional handset and remote charger stand
- Caller IQ compatible
- Chain dialing
- Call waiting/caller ID to see the name and phone number of incoming calls even while talking on another call
- 50-station caller ID memory and dialer
- 50-station phone books that are sharable among handsets
- Large multifunction three-line LCD display on handset (see each caller's complete caller ID information without additional scrolling)
- Backlighting on the handset LCD greatly aids visibility especially in low light
- All-digital answering system with voice menu & time/day stamp, 2-Digit LCD call counter on base, remote control from handset and outside lines
- Voice enhancer technology
- Easy operation (menu driven)
- Three ringer patterns and four melody rings
- Lighted handset keypad
- Each handset includes headphone jack and belt clip

Customer feedback:

1. Needed a phone system that wouldn't conflict with my wireless-g network. This one worked flawlessly. Excellent range can use outside the house. Crystal clear. Transferable phonebook between handsets. Works great with Vonage. It does everything I was looking for.

2. I am very surprised at some of the reviews for this phone, and am glad I did not see them before I purchased mine about 6 months ago. The phone has been flawless for us. We have the base downstairs in the kitchen and the satellite handheld on the 2nd floor in the master bedroom, quite a distance from the base. We use the intercom every so often without any problem. I have roamed the entire house and have had crystal clear reception each time. I have not tried venturing out into the yard very far with it.
The answering machine does everything it is supposed to. I love the feature of erasing some messages and keeping others. My old machine made you erase all or none.
I had a lot of family visiting with their laptops over Thanksgiving and the phones did not interfere with our wireless network. My sister complained that her 2.4 gHz cordless interferes with her wireless network all the time.

After adventurer Steven Fossett's disappeared last year, many wondered why his emergency beacon didn't work.

Fossett was known to have owned a Breitling Emergency watch. The watch is a multifunction chronograph that also has a micro-transmitter. In case of a crash, the wearer can activate the emergency signal, helping rescuers zero in on the crash site.

The watch, which starts at $5000, has become a must-have among most pilots and Fossett was known to wear one.

But Breitling USA marketing director Lisa Roman says Fossett was not wearing the watch at the time of the disappearance.

Breitling hasn't verified the fact independently, but the company says all original reports of the disappearance indicate Fossett didn't have it on his last adventure.

The Breitling Emergency has in other situations proved itself as a great emergency alert device. Its miniaturized transmitter
broadcasts at 121.5MHz, the international distress frequency. It is activated by unscrewing a protective cap and
pulling out the antenna.

The transmitter has a 48-hour power reserve and because the
operation and power source are independent, the transmitter can
function even if the chronograph is damaged.

The range of the watch's
signal varies depending on terrain. On flat
terrain, says Breitling, a search aircraft flying at 20,000 feet can pick up the signal
up to 100 miles away.
