This is starting to turn into a cat-and-mouse game akin to the the back-and-forths we’ve seen between Apple and the iPhone jailbreak underground community. This war has the underground scene always looking for new security exploits that will allow them to gain root access to their handset’s file-system. On the other side, the powers that be are always working to seal whatever security holes were used by the “jailbreak” community.

Google’s most recent move to thwart a nascent Android OS jailbreak uprising by rolling out a new Android OS update (RC30) that aimed to patch the security hole exploited by Android developers. The automatic, over-the-air (OTA) update was expected to essentially kill the Android OS jailbreak movement throughout the T-Mobile G1 fleet.

Today we’re seeing the jailbreak community’s counter-punch to Google’s left-hook. The ever driven developers over at XDA Developers have devised a method that allows G1 users to update their T-Mobile G1 to the latest Android OS RC30 build while still retaining access to the file-system root.

Poor Android in jail, he needs to be jailbroken!

The updated Android jailbreak method mirrors the jailbreak solution currently available for the iPhone OS. By modifying the security checks that the handset performs during a firmware restore, jailbreak developers are able to load modified firmware update files. These modified update files udpate the handset’s firmware to the latest version while retaining particular desired functionality.

In this case, the Android development community has come up with a method that allows them to modify the Android OS’s recovery.img file, which in turn allows them to flash a modified version of Android OS build RC30 to a T-Mobile G1. The modified Android RC30 firmware brings with it all the benefits of the new firmware version while still allowing users to gain root access to the file-system.

If you haven’t yet updated your T-Mobile G1 to the new RC30 update, and you want to preserve root access, you’ll want to follow this G1 jailbreak tutorial.

After the break, that is…

Please note that this forced update method is to be used only by those that want to preserve the root access exploit. Applying the modified Android OS update file takes time and familiarity with command line. Once applied, you will have to manually update to any future Android OS updates - because of this, it’s not recommended that casual users with no need for root access jailbreak their G1’s.

First off, you’ll need to download two files to your desktop:

Modified recovery image (which will become your recovery.img file)
http://fscked.net/%7Ejesusfreke/AndroidMod.zip

Modified Android OS RC30 update file with root access preserved
http://rapidshare.com/files/162035634/update-RC30-fullupdate-modified-testkeys-v1.1.zip

Download and install the Android Telnet Client from the Android Market

Download and install the Terminal Emulator app from the Android Market

Turn on WiFi and connect to your WiFi network

Now, go back to your downloaded files on your desktop

Decompress the AndroidMod.zip file

Extract “recovery_testkeys.img” to your desktop

Rename “recovery_testkeys.img” to “recovery.img”

Rename the modified Android OS RC30 update file from “update-RC30-fullupdate-modified-testkeys-v1.1.zip” to “update.zip”

Transfer the newly named “recovery.img” file and the newly named “update.zip” to your microSD card (you can use the microSD card that came with your G1)

Put microSD card in your G1 (if it’s not already in there)

Fire up “Terminal Emulator”

Type “cd system” and hit Enter

Type “cd bin” and hit Enter

Type “telnetd” and hit Enter

Type “netstat” and hit Enter

The IP address you want is listed on the same line as the word “Established”

Write down this IP address

Close Terminal Emulator (hit the “Home” button)

Fire up “Telnet”

In the IP address field (it should show “localhost”) enter the IP address you wrote down

Hit “Connect”

Now that you have root access, you’ll want to type in the following (hitting “Enter” at the end of each line):

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system

cat /sdcard/recovery.img > /data/local/recovery.img

cd /system

cat /sdcard/recovery.img > recovery.img

flash_image recovery recovery.img

Now turn off your phone

Restart the handset by holding down the “Power” and “Home” buttons simultaneously

When you see the triangle logo (you’ll know it when you see it), hold press “Alt” and “L” simultaneously

Ensure that you see “using test keys” along the top

Press “Alt” and “S” simultaneously

Follow the on-screen instructions

Press “Home” and “Back” buttons simultaneously when you’re done and ready to reboot

The G1 will reboot as it does its thing - let it do so.

You have now fully updated your T-Mobile G1 to Android OS RC30 with the root access exploit preserved - get at the root with the Terminal app.

Again, you run a very real possibility of bricking your T-Mobile G1 by updating it yourself. Making sure your battery is fully charged and that you disconnect the G1 from your computer before updating will help ensure a smooth update. Should things go awry, however, you’re on your own. (T-Mobile will likely help you out, but it’s not going to be a fun or speedy process)

Well that didn’t take long at all. The T-Mobile G1 has barely been officially on market for a week and we’re already seeing some of T-Mobile’s HTC-made G1 being liberated from T-Mobile’s GSM network.

The enterprising folks over at Unlock T-Mobile G1 have managed to figure out how to generate that magical 8-digit unlock code that will free your T-Mobile G1 from T-Mobile’s network. The SIM unlock solution requires that you supply Unlock T-Mobile G1 with your G1’s IMEI number along with a $22.99 fee. In return, they’ll send you an unlock code that will have your T-Mobile G1 surfing any GSM network in the world.

Buyer beware, the T-Mobile G1 features a dual-band (1700/2100Mhz) UMTS radio to hook up to T-Mobile’s nascent 1700Mhz AWS 3G network. That means you’ll be surfing the wireless web at EDGE-only data speeds should you unlock your G1 and use it with AT&T. 3G networks in Europe, on the other hand, will work just fine on the 2100Mhz band.

Worse yet, an unlocked T-Mobile G1 on AT&T’s network won’t log-on to Gmail - which pretty much kills the T-Mobile G1’s Google integration and Android Market features.

Still, if a T-Mobile G1 running on a non-sanctioned GSM network is the kind of thing that gets your blood flowing, the T-Mobile G1 unlock solution will probably be just the thing for you.

When it comes to the future of digital data consumption, we’re going to see the LCD display eventually give way to OLED technology, and eventually to holographic technology. But, active displays aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. For color, contrast, and response time, you just can’t beat an actively powered display.

But, the “future” has reserved a nice, big table for passively-powered E-Ink technology. We’ve been seeing E-Ink displays make their mark in a nascent niche market that includes the Amazon kindle, a smattering of prototype devices, and in concept devices. E-Ink’s strength lies in its passively powered display technology.

NEC e-Paper with 16-step grayscale

Rather than continuously drawing power, E-Ink displays only draw enough power to momentarily apply a charge to micro-electrodes underneath the display. The electrodes maintain the charge and attract positively- and negatively-charged pigment-particles. The oppositely charged white and black pigment-particles differentiate to display a static image (usually text) on the E-Ink display without the need for any additional electrical power. When the “e-Paper” needs to display a new image, voltage is re-applied and the pigments re-align to “rewrite” the text on the screen.

The latest development in e-Ink technology comes from NEC. By creating a new type of e-Paper, in A3 and A4 equivalent sizes, that feature bezels as thin as 1mm thick, NEC has announced the first-ever modular e-Paper display. NEC’s new e-Paper displays use E Ink’s Vizplex Imaging Film, and the A3-sized displays, with their 1mm thick bezel, can be almost seamlessly tiled together to form a larger E-Ink display. NEC says that up to eight e-Paper modules can be tiled together using their multi-tiling controller.

E-Paper boasts higher reflectivity rates than any actively powered display, allowing to it literally “outshine” its LCD rivals in terms of direct sunlight viewing, viewing angle, and absolutely trumping actively-powered displays when it comes to power-consumption. We welcome e-Paper advances and look forward to the day when e-Paper can handle higher resolutions, color images, and faster refresh rates!

The good news, though, is if netbooks match whatever bizarro world success qualifiers Apple has set and "take off". Jobs claims Apple has "got some pretty interesting ideas."

I'd love to see an Apple netbook, especially since netbooks seem to run better on OS X than they do even on XP. It's a bit strange to hear Jobs say Apple isn't interested in diving into nascent categories, though. The iPod — the company's greatest success — was about as nascent a category as you can dream up when it first hit the shelves.

I think this is simply the caution of a comfortably entrenched but still imaginative powerhouse. When Apple released the iPod in 2001, Apple was just beginning its ascent from mediocre also-rans to one of the industry's most exciting companies... largely through the launching of bold new products. Apple is now sitting comfortable, and favors being revolutionary in design and features (the MacBook line, the iPhone) than by jumping feet first into new markets.

In a
question-and-answer session held during Apple's quarterly earnings
call Tuesday, Steve Jobs reminded investors that Apple was not ready to enter
the netbook market because it's a "nascent category." However, he
hinted that the company is certainly thinking about it.

"We'll wait and see how that nascent category evolves, and we've got some pretty interesting ideas if it does," Jobs said.

He added that to the company's knowledge, netbooks aren't selling all that well. However, recent reports strongly disagree.

Netbooks -- low-powered, inexpensive mini notebooks made primarily for internet use -- are soaring in popularity. ABI Research forecasts that manufacturers will ship 200 million ultra-mobile
devices, including netbooks by 2013 -- which is about the same
anticipated size as the entire laptop market worldwide.

Also, IDC Research recently said
the rise of netbooks "coincided perfectly with market conditions." In
its report, IDC noted that Acer is now the third largest computer
manufacturer in terms of market share because of its netbook offerings.

To Apple's credit, new MacBooks and MacBook Pros currently crowd
several of the top spots on Amazon's list of 25 best-selling notebooks.
However, all the other devices on that list are netbooks, and the $400
Acer Aspire netbook sits at number one.

Also, before Apple announced new MacBooks on Oct. 14, netbooks claimed nine out the top 10 spots on Amazon's list of best sellers for several weeks.

Jobs
said in the mean time, the iPhone is a solution, since it fits into the
category of a pared-down, internet-enabled device. However, many would
likely disagree since the handset lacks a physical keyboard and its
screen size is only 3.5 inches, while netbook displays are typically 8
to 10 inches.

Nonetheless,
Jobs only said Apple isn't ready to step into the netbook category; he
implies the company has already thought about what its netbook would
be.

Meanwhile,
Macworld Expo, where Jobs typically launches brand new products, is
coming January. It's unlikely the company will unveil a netbook so soon
after Jobs said he wasn't ready for one.

But even if Apple were releasing one, Jobs probably wouldn't call it a netbook anyway, right?

Then again, if you can't wait any longer for Apple, you can always hack a netbook to run Mac OS X.

Yesterday, Apple didn't announce a netbook. When asked why, Jobs replied "That's a nascent market that's just getting started, and we'll see how it goes."

Nascent it may be, but it isn't stopping people rolling their own OS X netbooks. We did it here at Gadget Lab (in fact, I just put in a new, Apple-supported wireless card this morning -- more on that soon), and now Flung, over at NetBook Tech, has managed it with Lenovo's new IdeaPad S10, which we previously declared "The Best Netbook We've Seen All Year".

Flung has posted an exhaustive how-to, suitable for n00bs and veterans alike. He used the same WindOSx86 distribution that we did (although we actually rolled our own with the help of one of its creators, Stellarolla), and the initial part looks to be as easy as it was for us. Because WindOSx86 is optimized for the MSI Wind and its variants (hence the name), Flung had to iron out a few problems using the command line, and even then not everything worked out of the box:

Once logged in, you’ll notice right off the bat that some things don’t work. In particular, Wi-Fi, Sound, LAN, and Power Management fail to work after the initial install.

Thankfully, Flung provides links to the needed extras (kernel extensions, mostly) needed to fix things up. Like the Wind, the S10 still doesn't run OS X 100%: The mic and headphone jacks are dead, as is ethernet and, alarmingly, the sleep mode. But unlike the Wind, Wi-Fi is fine (the S10 uses the a Broadcom card, the same brand used by Apple).

We're certainly not getting tired of these hacks. It's getting easier and easier, thanks to the fine work of real hackers who run the OSx86 project. So easy, in fact, that – if you are prepared to wipe a working install and break a few license agreements – we'd say it would make a great first hacking project.

Despite a raft load of nifty new features, Apple's new Mac notebooks will have a hard time moving off store shelves during the economic crisis, industry analysts say.

"There
will be a lot of people looking at a lot of stuff at the Apple Store,
and they'll probably come out with [iPod] nanos or shuffles," said Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies. "That's
what people are going to feel like they're going to afford this year."

At its special notebook event Tuesday, Apple refreshed its entire notebook line, adding faster processors, multitouch trackpads, cast-aluminum enclosures and NVidia graphics
chipsets. In addition to adding new features, Apple is also making moderate price cuts for the MacBook and MacBook Air. However, analysts say Apple's price cuts are not enough for the company to remain competitive in the face of a broad financial collapse.

"Out of all the [companies] who
will be under pressure, it will be Apple because the price points are
still significantly higher," ThinkPanmure analyst Vijay Rakesh said in a phone interview.

The entry-point MacBook
dropped from $1,100 to $999; the high-end MacBook Air equipped with a solid
state drive dropped from $2,600 to $2,500, but its standard
configuration offering remained at the same $1,800 price point. The
MacBook Pro prices remained static — with a $2,000 starting point.

Early in the event,
Apple boasted grabbing 39 percent of the notebook market in education,
surpassing Dell, one of its major competitors. Despite the significance
of this figure, it's unlikely
Apple's notebook refresh will enable Apple to retain its grip on this
market segment, Rakesh said.

"If you
look at the educational side, the question is, do public school
budgets suffice for next year?" he said.

Just
days before Apple's notebook event, Rakesh and other analysts — including
Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster and RBC Capitalist's Michael Abramsky — said they were anticipating a sub-$1,000 notebook from Apple in order
for the corporation to hit its gross margin guidance for the fourth quarter.

Rakesh said Apple's $999 MacBook was a disappointing entry into the sub-$1,000 category: Most analysts were hoping for Apple to announce an $800 or $900 notebook.

Rakesh added that Apple still has yet to set foot in the netbook market — cheap, low-powered devices designed for internet use that are soaring in popularity. However, in a Q&A session, Steve Jobs said the netbook category is too immature for Apple to enter.

"That's a nascent market that's just getting started, and we'll see how it goes," Jobs said.

Meanwhile in trading, while Apple had gained a record-breaking 13 percent in share prices Monday and Tuesday, the stock deflated 5 percent by the end of the notebook event. However, stock drops have historically been
the case during Apple keynotes, and some are viewing selling stock during product announcements as a trading
strategy for investors.

Steve Jobs along with Jonathan Ive and Co. got up and waxed long and hard about Apple's newest refresh of its notebook line along with a few surprises (we actually got a "one more thing"!) Here are the most important gems we gleamed from the announcement:

They're in! The Liveblog commences:

From Mark McClusky:

9:46am: Alright. In the room classical guitar music playing....weird!

We're in the Town Hall meeting rooms at 4 Infinite Loop, at Apple HQ in Cupertino.

More classical music, cello concertos.

9:56am: "Please silence all your cellphones as a courtesy to the presenters onstage and your fellow attendees."

Getting ready to rock here.

Although the music is still like the most mellow music in the history of any Apple event. More string quartet stuff.

We're going for a high end vibe today, apparently.

Lights are dimming. Here we go.

Steve Jobs takes the stage, looks teh same as he did at the last event.

"We've got some fun stuff to share with you. Today's about notebooks, we've got some new ones to show you."

"I want to zoom out and cover the state of the Mac" Tim Cook, COO at Apple to cover it.

Cook: "Last reported quarter 2.5 million Macs sold."

Been growing 2-3x the market's growth rate.

Why are we growing faster?

10:01am: 1) Better computers. iMac, Macbook Air.

2) Better software. Leopard. "Virtually everyone agrees that Leopard is far ahead of Vista."

3) Compatibility. Boot Camp. Parallels, VMWare.

It's removing the fear for switchers.

4) Vista. This is something we didn't do. You may wonder why Vista
is on the list. I think it's fair to say that Vista hasn't lived up to
everything MSFT hoped it would. That's opened doors to lots of people
thinking of switching.

5) Marketing.

The Mac/PC ads have struck a chord with a lot of switchers.

10:04am: They tell a story.

6) Retail stores. Started this over 7 years ago. 250 stores now in 8 countries. 400,000 visitors a day.

10:05am: 50% of the Macs they sell are people who are new to the Mac.

These are the 6 reasons we'd attribute the momentum to.

As I said, this just didn't begin. If you look at the history, Mac has outgrown the market 14 of the last 15 quarters.

Retail share: 17.6% market share of unit sales.

Revenue share: 31.3% of retail sales.

10:07am: One out of every three dollars spent on a computer in US retail is spent on a Mac.

Education: We've surpassed Dell and become the top supplier of Notebooks, 39% of all notebooks.

10:09am: Many universities now require a computer. That school selects a list of computers, and the students get to pick.

Total Mac units: 4.5M in 05, 5.3M in 06, 7.1M in 07, 7.1M in three quarters so far this year.

Jobs is back: "Let's talk about notebooks."

We want to talk about some new ways of building notebooks.

Jony Ive coming up to talk about that.

(Not much Steve today so far)

Ive: I want to tell you about a real breakthrough we've had on how we can design and build our notebooks.

Currently, here's how we build our 15 inch Macbook Pro.

10:11am: When you're designing something that's thin and light, the trick is making it strong and robust and rigid.

The Aluminum enclosure makes a small contribution to the structure.

It's the internal frame that holds it together. Currently magnesium die casting.

10:12am: Series of stiffening plates and frames that are
welded to the top plate. Then we add the plastic gasket between the top
and bottom of the case.

The current version is best in class in size and weight, but we've been looking for a better way to build a notebook.

10:14am: We had a really significant breakthrough that culminated in the Macbook Air.
You couldn't build a product as thin, light and strong as the Air with the old way.

Rather than start with a thin piece of aluminum, and then add
material, we started with thick piece of aluminum and then remove
material.

That's how they do the Air's palmrest.

(Showing the milling of the Air's top plate.)

Constantly recycling the cuttings and waste.

Start with a slab that weighs 2.5 lbs. and end up with a .25 pound
plate that forms the structure of the Macbook Air. That unibody
construction made the Air possible.

Obviously, this has relevance beyond the Air.

We've been working hard to design new enclosures for new notebooks.

(Jobs back onstage.)

"We also have new graphics on Notebooks."

Nvidia came to us to talk about a new graphics part. It would
combine a chipset and graphics processors all in one part for a desktop
computer. We said we'd like to use it in a notebook.

10:18am: Nvidia GeForce 9400M

Chipset and GPU on one die. 70% is GPU. 16 parallel graphics cores. 54 Gigaflops.

5 times faster than intel integrated graphics.

Call of Duty runs 6.2 times faster, Quake 4 five times faster.

82% as fast as the nvidia chip in the MacBook Pros.

10:20am: So still not the high end option, but big upgrade.

New trackpad. Multi-touch, and glass.

39% larger area. Multi touch. Glass for smooth travel. Entire
trackpad is the button. Multi button via software. new four finger
gestures.

(No physical button!)

New gestures for expose and app switching.

10:22am: So let's take these technologies and make notebooks.

New MacBook Pro.

Black bezel.
LED backlight.

All connectors on one side.

Aluminum unibody.

Next gen graphics.

Glass trackpad.

Mini Display Port connector. This is going on all our products.

Black keyboard.

The unibody saves us 50% of the weight on the major structural parts.

Going to pass around one of the unibodies.

10:25am: Have people on the aisle to hand them out. Nice stagecraft.

Waiting to get it...

Teams of 100s of people have worked on this for many months.

10:26am: Just handled it. Super stiff, very light. Really is cool engineering.

(Our row is holding up the process...)

Lights back down.

You're the first to get your hands on it.

We're got the GeForce 9600M GT.

Both chips are in the computer! the 9400M, and the 9600M GT. 5 hours
of battery with the 9400, 4 with the 9600. Can switch between them.

10:29am: Superdrive.

Shipping today. Should hit stores starting tomorrow.

Lots of new tech, but we're just as proud of all the things we left out. We're working on leaving out toxic chemicals.

First time we've earned an EPEAT gold environmental rating.

Now, we want to talk about the Air.

10:34am: Update with some new technologies.

Putting the 9400M in the Air, get 4x faster graphics for the air.

120GB HD instead of the 80.

And have 128 SSD as option.

Mini-display port.

10:36am: Cable from back — power cord, USB, mini display. Just plug the three things into your computer, and you're set to go.

1920 x 1200 pixel, iSight and mic. Stereo speakers.

$899

10:37am: available in November.

A great companion to the MacBook Pro.

There's one more thing. Of course, that's the Macbook.

This is an amazing product. The best-selling Mac ever.

Entry price right now is $1099. Now, entry price is 999. We'll just keep on selling these for a long time.

We're heard from a lot of macbook customers. They want a metal enclosure, faster graphics, and they want LED backlit display.

These are the top three things we've heard, and we're bringing them to the Macbook line.

New generation on top of the white plastic notebook.

It's all new. Corner to corner glass, LED backlit display.

$1599: 2.4 GHZ proc, 250GB HD, and backlit keyboard.

10:43am: Shipping today, should hit the stores tomorrow.
This is the sweet spot of our market. We're going to give it to them at $1299.

Two new notebook families.

New way to build them, new graphics, new trackpad, and LED backlit displays,

Playing video, a little documentary.

Jony Ive talking...."We just decided to start over."

10:44am: (Battery display is now on the side of the computer)

Showing the manufacturing on the unibody.

13 milling operations from solid block to the finished part.

(Video is really rehashing much of what we've already heard.)

Oh, on the video, we just found out that the trackpad *is* a button. You press down on it to click.

So there still is a physical button — the trackpad itself.

10:50am: They're really hitting the environmental message hard.

Ive: "I love how we don't reserve our best ideas for our high end products."

Mark McClusky: "I haven't said it yet, but they really are beautiful computers. Hope to get hands on with them."

But first, Q & A.

10:52am: Jobs: A few caveats: no questions about earnings, which are coming a week from today.

My blood pressure: 110/70. This is all I'm going to talk about on my health today.

Third, we're not economists. So we're not going to talk about the global financial meltdown.

Phil Schiller and Tim Cook up there with Steve.

Relationship with Nvidia: We're the first to take this new chip to market. I know we're going to be using lots of them.

10:54am: Blu-ray? Display Port?

As you know, HDMI is limited in resolution, so you can't do our big 30-inch display.

Schiller: You can get to HDMI with connectors, we think display port is the connector of the future.

Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great from consumers, but the
licening of the tech is so complex, we're waiting until it takes off.

Schiller: we also think we have a great HD solution in iTunes.

17-inch pro?

It will still be available, being refreshed.

Stealing demand from high-end to mid-end with the MacBook?

10:57am:

We might, but we'll see what happens. We'll see a refresh cycle triggered in both spaces, I think.

Size and weight difference on MacBook:

1.08 to .95 inches thick.

Weight 4.5 pounds on the MacBook.

Matte screen in the future:

We're going straight glass screens. The vast majority prefer the glass screen. Image is crisper, colors are brighter.

You offset it by pushing a lot of light through it.

Netbook from Apple?

That's a nascent market that's just getting started, and we'll see how it goes.

11:02am: Did Apple design the motherboards?

We design them all in house. (Says Steve, laughing)

Touchscreens?

We've experimented with it, but it hasn't made a lot of sense to us.

Hands on area in the other room.
