They’ve done it again. Poor Motorola. They tried so hard to keep their beautiful new phone off of ebay. Here it is in all of it’s clone-y-ness.

It’s called the Wingtech D20, and basically what they have done is take all the beauty of the Aura and flush it down the toilet through the use of cheap plastics and bad colors. And there ya have it. Instant crap-gadget for people on a budget. Everyone will know you’re on a budget when they see this thing. Some features include: Swiveling, switchblade-like design exactly like the Motorola Aura, Support for dual-band GSM networks, GPRS Class 10, 1.5-inch TFT 128 x 128 pixel LCD, Multi-language support, MP3 and MP4 player, USB connectivity, and Up to 4 hours of talk time and 120 hours on standby.

Sometimes you just want to sit back and interact with a gelatinous black liquid on your desk. And of course, when you do, you want it to update your Facebook. Yes. That is what this goo does. It gets you more friends on social networks, and places yet another barrier between you and other real people.

Designer Nicolas Myers gives you some background:

Social networks, such as Facebook or Myspace, are a reality people using Internet can’t avoid. They become more and more important and take a crucial part of our virtual but at the same time real world identities. The way these systems work leads to new yet somewhat limited relationships : you can either “add a friend” or not, say “yes” or “no”. A binary thinking like this leaves no room for degrees of shade.

These oversimplified interactions are to some extent compensated by quantity - by collecting hundreds or even thousands of “friends”. On Myspace the true quality of the service lies in the size of the network itself. But how can you deal with these such complex networks? Are concepts like “friendship” or “relationship” still meaningful when you handle hundreds of them?

And then he goes ahead and goos up your social life:

Our project offers an indirect way to deal with these problems. A virtual robot makes and keeps new contacts for you by taking over your virtual identity. Your only control over its decisions is through an interface representing the network itself : a black liquid surface covered by numerous spikes that stand for each of your “friends”. It is by altering the surface of this « liquid », that one can interact with the robot and influence his actions in the virtual world.

This reminds me of a game called Progress Quest, a game in which your only interaction with the character, storyline, or anything else, is turning the game on. Heard of it? Me either.

By the way, this project is called Sociable Robot.

Defying the global economic slowdown, India's mobile-phone demand is expected to continue to rise at an accelerated rate in 2009 due to the rollout of 3G and WiMAX networks and the implementation of mobile number portability (MNP), according to iSuppli.

India's mobile-phone demand is expected to rise to 136 million units in 2009, up 23.9% from 110 million in 2008. This compares to 16.8% growth in 2008. Cellular subscribers in the nation will grow to 319.9 million by the end of 2008, up 36.9% from 233.6 million at the conclusion of 2007. iSuppli estimates India's total wireless subscriber base will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.1% for the period 2007 to 2012 to reach 715 million by the end of 2012.

"The continued expansion of India's mobile-handset market is partly due to the declining costs of calls, the availability of inexpensive handsets, increasing geographical coverage and operators' rising portfolio of value-added services (VAS)," said Abhimanyu Raina, associate analyst at iSuppli. "In 2009, the rollout of 3G and WiMAX networks and the implementation of MNP are expected to drive the growth of the wireless sector."

3G, WiMAX and MNP drive demand

Indian telecommunications operators presently are focusing on 2G CDMA and TDMA (GSM) technologies to deliver lower-cost mobile services. However, the process of cost reducing 2G-derived handsets seems to have reached its technical limits and iSuppli forecasts 3G and WiMAX will garner subscriber bases of 250 million and 19 million respectively by 2012. This growth can be attributed to spectrum availability, more affordable price points and support from the government. Initially, the market for these technologies is expected to be driven by corporate and enterprise users and by tech-savvy young people.

MNP will be implemented by the end of 2008 in four metropolitan areas: the National Capital Region, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. These rollouts will be followed by a launch in other areas by April 2009. As shown in nations such as Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, the implementation of MNP increases the churn rate, leading to rising competitiveness in the market. iSuppli expects similar results in India.

Forms GSMA partnership to drive development of embedded mobile connectivity

[2008 GSMA Mobile Asia Congress, Macau – 19 November 2008] Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions worldwide, has announced that to date it has shipped over 20 million mobile broadband units to over 115 countries covering Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, North America, Middle East and Africa. Having worked closely with more than 230 international operators, Huawei' s mobile broadband is the preferred choice for operators around the world.

The growth in mobile broadband products including data card, dongles and embedded modems has far exceeded the forecast of the industry in 2006 and 2007 for two consecutive years. Over the next three years, industry analysts expect the mobile broadband market to grow at an amazing Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 46%, with annual shipments reaching 100 million by 2011.

"Huawei has emerged as the gold standard in partnering with operators for mobile broadband devices. Its proven ability to focus on operators' needs, to provide differentiated customization, including award-winning industrial designs, and to deliver robust applications suites has been recognized by operators globally," said Edward Chen, CEO of Huawei Communication Technologies. "Huawei' s robust R&D systems and processes are engineered to ensure a fast response to meet operators' terminal customization requirements. This has helped it achieve a commanding position in mobile broadband products. As the market leader, Huawei is firmly committed in its efforts to driving worldwide broadband penetration and the fast evolution of this technology."

Huawei also revealed today a partnership with GSMA, the global trade body for the mobile industry. The two have joined forces to help the mobile industry realize the huge potential market for consumer and industrial goods that can connect to 3G mobile networks. The cooperation will initially focus on bringing the benefits of continuous mobile connectivity to consumer electronics. Devices with embedded mobile connections can automatically exchange images, information and other data with mobile phones, computers or the Internet.
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has delivered the world's first mobile softswitch using blade technology, to Australian operator Telstra, which has already brought the new MSC Server Blade Cluster into commercial service on its NextG(TM) network.

The Mobile Switching Center (MSC) Server is the main node in a mobile core network used to control the switching of voice traffic. With the new MSC Server Blade Cluster, network capacity can be increased by more than half a million subscribers by simply inserting a new blade (electronics board) in the MSC Server cabinet. This innovative design provides easy scalability and supports ultra-high capacity, providing significant cost savings for mobile operators.

Telstra is providing voice-switching capacity for all its mobile subscribers via a single national mobile core network where the MSC Servers are deployed in a combined GSM and WCDMA MSC pool. By 2010, Telstra intends to have replaced the current 18 regional MSC Servers by one MSC Server Blade Cluster pool deployed at two sites in eastern Australia. This rationalization will reduce equipment floor space by 85 percent, cut energy use by 75 percent and proportionately reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Telstra Executive Director for Wireless Mike Wright says: "By deploying the MSC Server Blade Cluster, we continue to invest in our Next G(TM) network to enhance its capacity and robustness. Ericsson's mobile softswitch allows us to streamline our core network while increasing voice capacity as we add subscribers. This simplification of our operations will make it easier and faster for us to operate, maintain and expand the core network."

Magnus Furustam, Vice President Product Area Core & IMS, Ericsson, says: "The success of mobile broadband and the continuous growth of voice traffic are placing great demands on mobile core networks. Ericsson is excited to be able to provide these significant capacity increases, while also improving efficiencies and environmental outcomes. Partnering with a leading-edge operator such as Telstra has enabled us to be first to market with new innovations to enhance the consumer experience."
