A dollar for Half-life

Here’s good news for the few people who still haven’t played the seminal shooter Half-Life.

Valve is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the release of the original Half-Life by offering a tremendous bargain. Until November 21, 12:00pm PST, the company will be offering the game for just $0.98 through its Steam online distribution service. That’s a savings of $9.01.

This is probably one of the best game deals this year so grab it while you can.

Google Sync Now Works with BlackBerry Contacts

Google Sync was launched awhile back as an app which paired up your Google Calendar with your BlackBerry’s Calendar. Combined with a robust GMail app, it made for a pretty sweet deal overall. Now Google Sync has extended to include wireless contact synchronization. My, that would make it awfully easy to get your contacts onto an Android G1, now wouldn’t it? Still, this is a great backup utility, especially for those who live and die by GMail anyway. Even small to medium businesses who rely on Google services and can’t afford a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, this is a huge help. TD-SCDMA Handset from Nokia Due Before End of 09

China’s proprietary 3G wireless infrastructure, TD-SCDMA, is a little closed-off from the rest of the mobile world, but Nokia’s still willing to show some love. A handset packing the S60 OS and TD-SCDMA support should be available before the end of 2009, with more likely to follow. Nokia had long ago assured folks that they would be supporting TD-SCDMA, but it’s only now that we’re seeing them put their money where their mouth is. The technology is still taking some time to gain traction, but Samsung has already squeezed out one handset, and ZTE launched one helluva looker in September, and now with the world’s biggest phone manufacturer stepping into the world’s biggest singular mobile market, there’s going to be some serious money to be made.

Bargain hunters and penny-pinchers with an iPhone 3G on their holiday “wish list” will be happy to hear that discount retail giant Wal-Mart and its subsidiary Sam’s Club will soon be offering the iconic Apple handset. Following on speculation hinting at just such a move, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club have been confirmed to be picking up the iPhone 3G within days of Christmas’s passing - more specifically, on December 28. Wal-Mart already has an iPhone-optimized website, why not carry the iPhone 3G itself?

Says an internal Wal-Mart document:

We are pleased to announce that Wal-Mart has reached agreement with Apple to offer iPhone 3G in Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart-managed Sam’s Club* Connection Centers nationwide beginning December 28, 2008. AT&T will support Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club with the activation process for iPhone 3G, and we need all National Retail employees engaged to ensure a successful launch.

The iPhone 3G will only be sold with a two-year contract, so don’t get your hopes up for an unlocked or contract-free iPhone 3G. Pricing information isn’t yet available, but given Wal-Mart’s penchant for “rolling back prices” like we saw with the T-Mobile G1, we could see Wal-Mart hocking iPhone 3G’s at a lower-than-retail price-point.

Those with a mind for saving as much as possible on high-end purchases may have won’t be seeing an iPhone 3G stuffed in their stocking in time for Christmas, but what’s a couple days when cash-savings are at stake?

The iPhone 3G will be made available at 2,500 Wal-Mart locations, with an additional 69 Sam’s Club stores joining the fray. Select Wal-Mart locations will even feature live, in-store demonstration units, just like Best Buy Mobile stores.

Nokia Photos 1.5 out of beta!

It haven’t took long for Nokia to dump the “BETA” status from the latest version of Nokia Photos. The official version 1.5 is now available for download, ready to compete head-to-head with likes of Google Picassa.

Although the application doesn’t require a Nokia handset to work (you can import photos from a digital camera, memory cards/sticks, other mobile phones), it will work best with Nokia Symbian S60-based smartphones. That being said, NSeries owners can take advantage of advanced Nokia Photos features and for instance convert videos on-the-fly to the right ready-for-mobile format, or shrink pictures to the screen resolution so that they save storage space on the device. As a result, you can carry virtually thousands of pictures and hundreds of videos with you, all the time.

Additionally, newer models like the Nokia N78 and N96 understand tags, location-based information (geo-tagging), albums and other organization in Nokia Photos and display them in the “Photos” app on the phone.

Finally, as you’ve probably guessed - the application is made to sing along Nokia Ovi service. Heck, even the look and feel of Nokia Photos is consistent with the Ovi brand. The idea is of course to allow users to upload their photos to Nokia’s servers, and share them or have them accessible from wherever they happen to be…

Nokia keeps expanding the list of supported devices for its N-Gage mobile gaming platform/service. Two additional devices that are now included in the mix are the Nokia N78 and 6210 Navigator.

The easiest way to grab the N-Gage app for you N78/6210 Navigator is to point your S60 browser to “n-gage.mobi/d” (there’s no “www”) and follow the procedure on the screen. Alternatively, you can grab the app from N-Gage’s website and install it through Nokia PC Suite.

In total, N-Gage now works on about a dozen phones, including the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic, N79, N81, N82, N85, N95, N96…

Most compatible devices either come with the N-Gage app pre-installed, or the application is included with the latest firmware. That’s one more reason to keep your firmware up to date…
