Alienware has just released its Aurora Online Gaming Edition desktop PC that touts to offer the best online gaming experience possible (good news for those who just picked up the Wrath of the Lich King expansion), courtesy of the Killer NIC K1 network card thrown inside that touts to reduce lag for a smoother and more responsive online gameplay experience. Of course, since it carries the Alienware brand name, you can be sure that the Aurora won't skimp in terms of hardware as well, featuring the following :-

AMD Phenom X4 9950 2.6GHz processor

4GB RAM

Alienware P2 chassis

AlienIce 3.0 Video Cooling

ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card

250GB SATA hard drive

20x dual-layer DVD burner

This Vista-powered desktop will be priced from $1,899 upwards. This is deja vu all over again, as we've seen the World of Warcraft WidowPC sporting a similar theme two years back.

The MvixBOX WDN-2000 is a 2 drive box that can 2 1TB drives either in a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration (either 1 or 2TB net storage). That’s a lot of storage.

But that’s barely the start of it. The MvixBOX sits on your network and offers up network storage via CIFS, AFP, NFS, & WebDev protocols over a GB NIC. You can drag and drop files to your MvixBOX using your computer, and access it in a myriad of ways.

The MvxiBOX comes with an Apache web server, as well as PHP and MySQL capabilities, so you can run a little home website if you wanted.

When the dust of the presidential election settles, whoever claims the <s>throne</s> big chair in the White House will get briefed on all kinds of stuff. Said stuff includes a report titled Global Trends 2025 — put together by the National Intelligence Council, a US Intelligence Community think tank — which states: "Six civil technologies offer the potential to enhance or degrade US power over the next fifteen years." It includes "service robotic technology" as part of the six.

So here's the breakdown: The NIC report places Japan at the top as the leader in R&D and commercialization of 'bots, followed by the US, South Korea and the EU. It details the rise of wearable robots and the semi-autonomous variety over the next decade, culminating in artificial intelligence with the power to "demonstrate useful decision-making and communicate effectively." The report also makes some pretty lofty predictions: home robots evolving from toys to tools in 2015, and fully autonomous robots in the military beyond 2020. While it all may seem far on the horizon, it's telling that think tanks are targeting advanced robotics as something that'll need some legislating soon.

The other possibly disruptive techs? "Biogerontechnology, energy storage technology, biofuels and bio-based chemical technology, clean coal technology, ... and information technology devoted to increased connectivity of people and things."

The Obama campaign made history and headlines this weekend by announcing Senator Obama’s VP selection via SMS text message. Estimates vary on how many messages were sent, but how many people actually received a text-message from Obama? Just ask Nielsen.

Nielsen Mobile, a service of The Nielsen Company, estimates that 2.9 million US mobile subscribers received a text message from the Obama campaign over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

How does Nielsen know this? Nielsen Mobile monitors shortcode marketing (the use of text-message shortcodes such as the 62262 “O-B-A-M-A”) through the world’s largest telecommunications bill-panel, an opt-in panel that reports on the billing activity for more than 40,000 subscriber lines in the US. It’s just one of the many ways Nielsen reports on wireless and mobile media consumers.

The VP message was sent in the late hours of Friday night and is, by many accounts, the single largest mobile marketing event in the US., to date. From a mobile perspective, it makes sense that the campaign chose to use text-messages. Today, 116 million US mobile subscribers (52 percent of subscribers) actively use text messaging, making it a new mass medium for marketing efforts.

Some additional, on the record thoughts from Nic Covey, director of insights at Nielsen Mobile:

While much has been said of the timing and the scoop by news outlets, Obama’s VP text message still ranks as one of the most important text messages even sent and one of the most successful brand engagements using mobile media
The value of the message goes far beyond the 26 words and 2.9 million recipients. Here, Obama branded himself as cutting edge, inflated the already enormous press attention paid to his VP pick and further established a list of supporters’ most coveted form of contact: their cell phone numbers.
The success of this text-campaign has Madison Avenue thinking even more about how they too can interact with a universe of 116 million text-message users in the US.

It uses Intel's latest Core 2 Duo ULV (same as X301 <strike>and probably MacBook Air refresh</strike>), and it's well, loaded. One of our favorite things about it is that it's got more storage options than any other notebook that size.

Here's your list of drive options: 80/120GB 1.8-inch SATA drive plus optical drive, dual 1.8-inch SATA, 120GB 2.5-inch 5400RPM, 160GB 2.5-inch 7200RPM with DriveGuard or 80GB SSD. So yeah, it's pretty flexible.

It also has all of the usual HP business stuff like a biz card reader, lots of security and encryption tools, and the trackpoint nipple if you don't like trackpads. Display is LED-backlit and you have a few different battery options. And hey, besides being touch, we're always sort of a sucker for brushed metal.

With a starting weight of just 3.19 lb /1.45 kg, the HP EliteBook 2530p Notebook PC meets the military standard MIL-STD 810F for tests including dust and high temperature17 and keeps you going without weighing you down. Keeps the ultra mobile—ultra-productive Strengthen security measures and remotely monitor, diagnose, and repair PCs over the network with Intel® Centrino® 2 with vPro™ technology.11 The HP EliteBook 2530p also gives you flexible solutions that work best for you: 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch hard drive, and Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage2
(ULV) or Low Voltage (LV) processor. With two memory slots, you can increase your system’s performance, enabling a quicker boot-up and the ability to run multiple programs simultaneously.

Empower your business
Benefit from the mercury-free, 12.1-inch diagonal widescreen HP Illumi-Lite LED display which is lighter and more energy-efficient than standard CCFL display technology. The HP EliteBook 2530p also offers three flexible battery solutions for
lightest weight configurations or all-day computing.

Whether you’re across the street or across the country, integrated HP Mobile Broadband, Gobi technology, 4 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ WLAN5 and Bluetooth® help you stay connected in more places. You also get the flexibility to add HP Mobile Broadband at a later date.

Built to last. Enhanced reliability features such as HP DuraCase, HP DuraKeys, HP DuraFinish, and HP 3D DriveGuard give you a durable device so your notebook can go the distance. Built to simplify. Specs and features are mostly the same as the other EliteBooks too (Intel Core 2 Duo ULV, SSD option, HP business and security stuff like the biz card reader, encryption and DriveGuard).

If you’re looking to access all of that TV and video content you have ‘trapped’ at home, and you were thinking Slingbox, think again, because they’re not the only game in town. Enter Hava. The Hava Platinum HD arguably has more features than the Slingbox Pro. Connect any of your HiDef video sources to the Hava and then access it over your home network on your computers, or over the Internet, plus compatibility with Windows Media Center to let you create a virtual TV tuner.

Hava Platinum functions as a DVR so you can pause, rewind and fast-forward in DVD quality using MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 format. You can connect it via the Ethernet (802.3) 10/100 NIC to your network, and can even view it on your mobile phone. The PC client even allows you to burn your TV shows to DVD.

If you’re interested in wireless access, Hava also has a version with wireless connectivity, the Titanium HD WiFi.

The Brando Networked Video Camera System equipped with built-in Ethernet NIC for instant broadcasting, it means this home surveillance is easy to setup. And as reviewed by The Gadgeteer, this camera is also remotely adjustable via web browser.

All in all, this camera is a good idea. It’s pretty easy to setup, although the instructions were no help (Chinese-to-English never works very well, it seems). The web interface is pretty crucial to using the camera, and it’s just a total flop in my book. For that reason, I’d personally recommend looking at other products for your home surveillance needs.

As part of Sprint's new push to become the wireless carrier of choice for top-notch customer service, the No. 3 US wireless carrier has been sending out "Thank You" emails to loyal customers. The latest round of emails has Sprint asking customers to go green and recycle their used cellphones. The Sprint BuyBack program is offering to take old and unused handsets off your hands - destined to be recycled, refurbished, or resold.

But, don't think Sprint is looking to make a quick buck off your old mobile phone. No, Sprint has announced that it will donate all proceeds from sales of used handsets to charity - specifically to help increase internet safety for children.

The US is one confused wireless market. By some measures, the US lags behind Europe and Asia in the mobile industry, by other measures, the US is tops. Case in point, mobile internet usage.

A study from Nielson Mobile (PDF link) shows that the US ranks as the country with the highest percentage of mobile internet users. The study took in to account 16 countries' mobile internet penetration rates, and concludes that the US is No. 1. The US showed a 15.6% mobile internet penetration rate, with the UK boasted 12.9% and Italy trailing with penetration figures of 11.9%. Interestingly, the mobile phone that served up the most mobile-web data was the Motorola RAZR and RAZR2 - not the iPhone, not some BlackBerry, just a plain-old RAZR. Go figure.

"In the 16 countries we looked at, the U.S. is tops in terms of penetration and I would say that surprises me at this point,” said Nic Covey, Nielson's director of insight.

We agree, that is truly surprising. Of course, all these "research" figures are highly dependent on the sampling population.
