When we think “wireless headset” we’re usual conjure up images of Bluetooth headsets and headphones beaming phones calls and music to our ears. Nikon’s Media Port UP headset looks to change our notion of what a “headset” can do.

The over-the-ear style headset features a flip-down monocle display that can be used to watch videos or surf the web. With 4GB (Nikon Media Port UP300) or 8GB (Nikon Media Port UP300x) of onboard storage, the Nikon Media Port UP headset can download data from the web (via a WiFi connection) to enjoy later or just play video and music. Integrated motion sensors allow for hands-free webpage navigation media playback controls through head-motions (up, down, left, and right).

The Nikon Media Port UP headset brings your favorite media with you for on-the-road pleasure. Because, you know, real life is just so boring.

Nokion Media Port UP headset - Resistance is futile.

The Nikon Media Port UP300 ($580) and UP300x might not catch on in the mass market, but it’s definitely an interesting idea. Now, if this Borg-style headset were to sport a Bluetooth connection to link up with a smartphone, would anyone use it?

Welcome all to Episode 3 of The Signal!

The BlackBerry Storm came rolling in this week, complete with a 90% chance of advertisements from both Verizon and Vodafone. The next BlackBerry Curve, model number 8900, also peeked its head out on T-Mobile Germany. We also take a minute to fawn over HTC’s WiMAX version of the Touch HD in Russia and pray that it’ll come to Sprint’s XOHM network sometime this century. Short episode this week on account of Will being out of commission, but we still take a good solid look at the BlackBerry Storm and where it’s going.

The week’s big news and download link for The Signal: Episode 3 behind the jump!

Recently there seems to be a great rush for low-end cellphones on US carriers, so on top of the Samsung SGH-a637 announced today, there is the Nokia 1680 which is available T-Mobile. You can't get more cheap than $15 after the rebate and T-Mobile contract, can you?

The 1680 Classic cellphone was first seen a few months ago, and at that time it was most affordable camera phone on the Nokia catalog.

Currently it boasts basic SMS, MMS and IM messaging functionalities, a VGA camera, and a speakerphone. One positive point goes for the battery life in stand-by mode, that can last 18 days. While talking the battery only has life for 4 hours.

- Picture messaging: Send pictures from your phone to others.
- Photo caller ID: See a photo of your caller to quickly decide whether to answer.

The firmware version 300.34.84 brings several improvements, including:

Faster orientation switching (open/close lid etc)

Nokia Maps 2.0

Updated Download! application (v3.1.736)

Music player is updated

Flash Lite 3 and Flash video updated

Wi-Fi improvements

New baseline for VoIP

RealPlayer supports FLV format

On the downside, though, this update knocks out Blackberry support, so if this is important to you then don’t upgrade for now.

i.TV is one handy app for virtually everyone who enjoy watching TV and/or movies. Whether you’re looking for something interesting on a TV or what’s hot in the theaters, i.TV can help you out. As a matter of fact, the official AppStore page says that users can browse more than 144,000 TV and movie listings and 5,000+ local theaters. In addition, you can watch TV previews and movie trailers (6,000+ of these are available at the moment), view detailed show descriptions, celebrity bios and photos.

There’s also a social networking element included in the mix, allowing everyone to vote, write reviews, and share TV and movie info with friends.

The best part is the price — i.TV is free. Plus, they’ve wowed to keep improving the app and make it the ultimate TV/movies guide. Some of the features that will be available in the coming weeks and months include live TV streaming, ability to use your iPhone/iPod Touch as a remote control for your DVR, DVD rentals management and the ability to buy movie tickets right from i.TV. Nice!

Sure we’ve seen a number of diamond-encrusted iPhones. What was missing were an appropriate headphones, and voila, they are in front of you. These earphone covers are designed to work perfectly with Apple’s gear, and by gear we mean headphones. Designed to be super-exclusive for super-rich folks, these diamond-encrusted iPhone/iPod earphone covers costs $60,000! You’ve read that right - that’s sixty thousand US dollars. Some diamond iPhones cost less…

If that’s too much for you, there’s a $4,500 “version” encrusted with black or white diamonds, or the “fake-billionaire-version” covered with multi-colored Swarovski crystals that could be yours for just $110. A bargain, if you want to hang out with tycoons.

This Nokia concept tries to right this wrong by using a small pump to fill a substrate beneath the screen that gives our fingers something to feel and press. Maybe now I can finally type out these posts while driving to work without having to put my coffee in the cup holder.

Here’s a round of of best netbooks you can get from Amazon today from our Laptop Blog:

Eee PC 1000H is probably the top-of-the-line netbook to get right now as it offers a 10″ screen,160GB hard drive, Windows XP, and Atom 1.6Ghz processor. I like the fact that Eee PCs have been leading the netbook industry and you won’t be disappointed carrying this 3.1 pound beast in your bag. The battery life is estimated at 7 hours but I think as long as you get about 4-5 hours on this, that’s good enough.

There’s other models of Eee PCs, but this one is the that will give you bang for you buck as it has the largest harddrive.

Eee PC 1000H - $479 at Amazon

MSI Wind 10″ netbook is probably the 2nd best choice right now as far as performance and speed goes. This MSI netbook comes with 10″ screen, 80GB harddrive, 1.6 Ghz Atom processor, Windows XP, and weighs just 2.1 pounds. I do like it but I’d rather get the Eee PC 1000H which comes with larger harddrive and longer battery life.

MSI Wind 10″ - $549.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ netbook is next with 160GB harddrive, Atom N270 processor, Windows XP, and 1GB memory. I think 8.9″ is too small for any netbook but if you must get an 8.9″ screen, get this one as it comes loaded with features you won’t see on the other 8.9″ netbooks. The 5.5 hour battery life should last you at least 3-4 hours.

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ Sapphire Blue $429.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ White $429.99 at Amazon

HP 2133 Mini-note is also a good alternative if you need a slightly bigger resolution than all the other 3 above netbooks. The HP 2133 netbook comes with 120GB harddrive, 1.6Ghz VIA processor, and 2GB of memory. The worst thing about this laptop is that it comes with Windows Vista, power-hogging operating system that’s not a good fit for mini-laptops. I do like is the 8.9-inch screen with WXGA (1280 x 768) resolution, webcam, and 92% full-size keyboard, which beats all the other netbooks.

But yes, this would still be my last choice as it costs as much as your 15.4″ laptops.

HP 2133 Mini-note - $640.98 via Amazon

Well, there you have the best netbooks Latop Pimp thinks. If you really must get a netbook, get the Eee PC1000H, it’s the best value and performance for your money.

Now, if you think all these netbooks don’t live up to your standards, get a regular laptop or better yet, wait about 6 months and you should see 5 times better netbooks.

Netbooks are still in the early stages and you need to consider the fact that they are “beta” products that manufacturers are still testing. After 6-12months, we should expect more netbooks that are faster and better.

GPS semiconductor vendors are increasingly focusing on GSM handsets as their next target market for GPS chipsets. While until now CDMA handsets and navigation devices have been the main GPS product categories, GSM mobile phones are expected to increasingly feature GPS-chipsets as handset-based navigation and a wide range of location based services such as local search and social networking become popular. GPS already has become a standard feature on smartphones, with recently launched products from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Palm and Samsung and the iconic iPhone, expected to become important drivers for LBS uptake due to their large screens and text input facilities.

“Despite its appeal, the handset form factor poses a series of new challenges to GPS chipset vendors”, says ABI Research director Dominique Bonte.” While minimal power consumption, price, and small footprint are even more important in handsets than in PNDs, the bigger issue is related to indoor coverage, as handset-based LBS services will be frequently used in urban canyons and indoor environments such as shopping malls where GPS reception is impaired.”

The very important trend of “combo” chipsets – integrating different radio technologies such as FM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS on a single chip – promises to provide a solution to power, footprint, and price challenges, while also allowing integration of alternative positioning technologies such as Wi-Fi to provide better indoor coverage and a seamless positioning experience to the end user. This is evidenced by the recent announcement of Broadcom’s partnership with Skyhook Wireless. The expected availability of combo chipsets in 2009 from major GPS chipset vendors such as Broadcom, Atheros, NXP, and Texas Instruments will play an important role in accelerating the adoption of GPS in mass market handsets, ultimately making it a standard handset feature.
