docomo PRIME series F-01A based on Symbian OS launched today

TOKYO, Japan, 19 November, 2008 - Symbian Limited welcomes NTT DOCOMO’s launch of the docomo PRIME series™ F-01A based on Symbian OS™, which starts shipping in Japan today.

Symbian OS is the global, market-leading open operating system for mobile phones.

The docomo PRIME series F-01A is a powerful, waterproof handset, allowing users to operate intuitively with its touch screen. This new phone is manufactured by Fujitsu Limited and is includes the MOAP® platform which is compliant with the latest FOMA specifications.

Symbian continues to focus on delivering a flexible, robust and open mobile operating system which gives handset manufacturers and network operators the ability to develop differentiated phones, faster, more easily and at a lower cost for different market segments and regions. DoCoMos Android handset to be 20% cheaper than other smartphones

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has elaborated on the Android handset due to drop in 2009 announced in October. South Korean service provider, KTF, will also be carrying the device, purportedly for 20% less than the usual cost of smartphones due to savings from using Google’s free operating system. We had already seen what doors are opened by a free OS through basement entrepreneurs like Australia-based Kogan, but as seen by these savings, larger operators are in a good position to slash prices on their phones and rope in a wider audience.

Long-Term Evolution

Long-Term Evolution is the next step for wireless networks, and RIM wants to be on board the minute the 4G technology gets deployed; according to insiders, a team has been formed to begin work on a 4G BlackBerry using the LTE standard. BlackBerrys were a little late to the 3G game, with the 8703 being the only supporting smartphone available until the EV-DO BlackBerry 8130 was released last winter. LTE is going to be quite the jump, promising data downlink speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s, a boat that RIM obviously wants to be on, especially when some impressive WiMAX devices are beginning to make the rounds already. RIM still has some time before LTE becomes widespread however - the infrastructure won’t be rolling out until 2010.

Even before the iPhone, NTT DoCoMo was making phones with accelerometers that let you play chokkan (motion) games, send an email with a flick of your wrist, and use the phone physically to interact with applications. Recently, much has been made of using the onboard cameras to accomplish the same thing, and there are more and more cool applications coming out.

For those of us without Guitar Hero we can now use our mobile phones to play Chokkan Band courtesy of Taito.

The sensor on the phone detects movement, allowing anyone to use the phone as a guitar, violin, drums, or other instrument. Synched up together, you can create an entire band in perfect harmony, jamming out to songs downloaded through the service. The game is free, but songs come at a small fee.

Below is a video from the new online campaign for Chokkan Band starring their new…err…spokesmodel rocking out around Tokyo in public baths, at the laundry, in Shibuya. You know, normal places where you would play in a rock band with your mobile phone.

NTT DOCOMO goes on the market of India

Today, the Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO announced the signing of an agreement with Indian companies, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) and Tata Sons Limited to establish a strategic alliance in India, under which DOCOMO acquired 26 percent ordinary shares of TTSL worth about 130.7 billion Indian rupees (US $ 2,7 billion).

In addition, DOCOMO, in accordance with the regulations of the Indian Commission of Securities, plans to make a public proposal to acquire 20 per cent of ordinary shares issued recourse, the company Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited (TTML), a telecommunications company in the group companies Tata, through a joint tender with Tata Sons.

As a result of the capital, the partners hope to expand the processes associated with mobile communications, the fastest growing mobile market of India, aiming to increase earnings and achieve stable growth businesses.

NTT DoCoMo to release 22 (!) phones by March
