More and more young people were exposed to the significant threat that leisure noise posed to hearing.

Commission experts estimate that between 50 and 100 million people listen to portable music players on a daily basis.

If they listened for only five hours a week at more than 89 decibels, they would already exceed EU limits for noise allowed in the workplace, they said. But if they listened for longer periods, they risked permanent hearing loss after five years.

More at the New York Times.

And thanks to Kid's Health for the ear shot.

That beat the 25% of respondents that said they most often use a CD player when listening to tunes and 14% that use an MP3 player.

Just under 10% turned to satellite radio, while only 5% listened over their computer and a scant 1% used a tape deck.

Not surprisingly, young adults (45%) were more likely to use an MP3 player than their elders (22%), the survey said.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans said they listen to music everyday or nearly everyday.

While more popular with younger listeners, 69% of respondents said they rarely or never download music, while 18% said they do that occasionally. Of those that download, 71% said they do it legally, while 3% admitted that they pirated tunes. The balancer (26%) were unsure if they downloaded music legally or illegally.

A vast majority -- 90% -- said they did not belong to a monthly music service. But those who said they download music daily or at least once a week were more likely to do it illegally than those who do it once a week or less frequently.

More at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

And how many of you remember Elvis Costello's single, "Radio Radio"?

Sony wants the Walkman players to stay alive and thus they launched three players at the IFA. First is the S series which includes NWZ-S630F/S730F media players. Sony touts these players as format-friendly which support various audio and video formats. The player has a 2-inch QVGA screen, iTunes support for file management and comes with 8 preloaded music videos from Chris Brown, Sandi Thom and The Ting Tings. 3-way noise cancelling technology also makes an entry but it is limited to S730F model. SensMe channels are something new in Walkman DAPs which automatically generates a suggestive playlist according to the speed, mood and rhythm of the songs played. The player’s estimated playback time is 40 hours for audio and 10 hours for video

The E430F is pretty identical S630 and belongs to the same series which was unveiled in New Zealand sometime back. Last are the DAPs, NWZ-B130/B130F (supports FM Radio). A basic audio player fulfilling one’s desire to own a Walkman device. Playback time stands around 16 hours.

Finally, here’s the third new portable MP3 player from Sony, the Walkman B-Series (we’ve posted about the S-Series and E-Series yesterday). Marked as an entry-level Walkman, the device does come with all the good things found on its siblings, including easy file transfer, integrated FM radio tuner, voice recorder, and support for wide-range audio formats (no video, folks), such as WMA and MP3. It also has a stylish design with an exciting illuminator that pulses in time with the music when the bass button is pressed. Pretty cool.

Regarding battery life, B-Series Walkman can stand up to 16 hours of music. Currently, two models with diifferent capacity are available: the NWZ-B133F (1GB, $45) and NWZ-B135F (2GB, $60).
Mentioned earlier, Sony is going to introduce three new Walkman series during IFA 2008 event — the S, E, and B-Series. We’ve posted about the S-Series Walkman before, so it’s time to get up, close, and personal with the the E-Series. Like its sibling, the E can play various media formats easily, thanks to its format-friendly platform. Users can easily play song from their personal music collection, music store downloads, and rights-managed video clips. It also supports DRM’ed WMV format, allowing rights-protected movies and video clips to be played. Users can listen to the music for up to 45 hours, or watch the movie for up to 8 hours straight.

Sony Walkman E-Series MP3 Player is currently available in two models — the NWZ-E436F and NWZ-E438F. The first has 4GB of storage and retailed for $100 with four different color options (black, red, pink, and blue). The latter comes with 8GB of storage and can be purchased for $140. Flavours include black, red, and pink.

Sony is preparing three new Walkman series for tomorrow’s IFA 2008 event — the S, E, and B series. Let’s talk about the S series first. At just 7.5mm thick, the player is loaded with a bunch of high-end, format-friendly features, including the ability to play music from different sources, a handy preinstalled Content Transfer software, and support for popular multimedia codecs, such as WMV (DRM), WAV, and obviously, MP3.

To make things even better, Sony loads the S-series Walkman with Sony’s SensMe Channels function which automatically creates channels that can align with a user’s preferences. Based on Sony’s SensMe Channels function, the S-series players analyze a user’s music collection and suggest channels based on each song’s speed, mood and rhythm. They create a choice of 11 themed channels from upbeat pop to emotional ballads. Pretty cool, isn’t it? FYI, S-series is the first MP3 player with this kind of unique feature.

Other features include an in-flight noise cancellation for convenient music playback during flight, a high-contrast 2-inch QVGA display, up to 40 hours of music playback, up to 10 hours of video playback, and personalizeable interface with up to 10 pre-installed wallpaper images (users can also use their own photo as a wallpaper if they want).

Sony Walkman S series MP3 player is currently available in two different capacity variants: the NWZ-S736F (4GB) and NWZ-S738F (8GB). Both available in black color with price respectively set at $150 and $180.

The top-end, format-friendly Sony Walkman S-series broadens options for enjoying tunes from multiple sources, including many download stores and personal music collections. Support for popular audio and video codecs is enhanced because the S-series Walkman devices play Windows Media Video (WMV) files with DRM, allowing you to enjoy rights-protected movies and video clips from other media collections. Additionally, the S-series Walkman players are the first MP3 players with Sony’s SensMe Channels function, which automatically creates channels that can align with a user’s preferences. The top-end S-series Walkman players feature integrated active noise cancellation with supplied 13.5mm EX noise canceling headphones and an accessory cable that extends the noise canceling functionality of the device.

The Sony S-series of Walkman noise canceling video MP3 players come in two different storage capacities in black. The NWZ-S736F has approximately 4GB of internal storage and will cost about $150. The NWZ-S738F has approximately 8GB of internal storage and will cost about $180.

Sony just launched new Walkman portable media players: the S, E and B Series. The most interesting one is the high-end S-Series. It comes with a new music management software that's built to be friendly with music collection ripped from CDs (non-DRM files). It also supports windows media video with DRM (WMV) and can play video at 30fps on the 2" QVGA (320x240) LCD display. We would have preferred DivX or H.264, but both are not mentioned anywhere in the specifications. For travelers, the S-Series can act as a noise-cancelling device. If it is anything like previous models, I can tell you that it does reduce noise, but I don't expect it to be as good as dedicated noise-cancelling headphones - but it's not a bad compromise. If on the contrary, you are in a quiet environment, you can use the internal speakers.

Remember those new Walkmans we saw recently? Well the folks at Sony have decided to get all fancy and official with them. The electronics-maker is introducing S-, E-, and B-Series PMPs, all featuring MP3 and WMA playback, drag-and-drop file management, and a variety of storage capacities. The 4GB NWZ-S736F and 8GB NWZ-S738F sport Sony's "Open Platform" which allows AAC, Linear PCM, and other codec support, 40 hours of battery life, in-flight noise cancellation, and SensMe -- which creates song shuffles based on user listening habits. The 4GB NWZ-E436F and 8GB NWZ-E438F come in a handful of colors and deliver up to 45 hours of playback, while the low-end 1GB NWZ-B133F and 2GB NWZ-B135F add an FM tuner and voice recording functionality. The players will be available come September, ranging in price from around $45 to $180.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
