A twist on the idea of the underwater turbine, the Searaser also uses the motion of the ocean to generate power. The device consists of two independent floats that move with the waves, pumping out seawater as they do. The water can then be pumped inland for hydroelectric power, irrigation, or to hilltop reservoirs for later use. One unit should be able to power 470 homes, and a six-month preproduction trial is currently being planned. You know, as quirky energy solutions go, this one doesn't actually seem all that far-fetched. At the very least, it seems better than going Micro-Nuclear.

[Via The Times]

Searaser is in prototype form at the moment, and it works by bobbing up and down as waves pass by. An underwater pump uses this motion to push water into a reservoir 160 feet uphill. And there it sits until it's simply released to power a generator. Neat stuff, particularly when the inventors say a full-sized version can power about 470 homes all by itself. Sure enough, here it is, in time for the holidays. LaCie has announced US pricing and availability for the bulked up multimedia drive, and you can get one right now starting at $199.99.

Sizes include 250GB, 320GB and 500GB. It’s rugged in name and rubberized build. Great for the media enthusiast who plans to throw their gear around the room and do all kinds of crazy “Will it still work” tests.

Looking for a casual game to keep you occupied while you're standing in line at the post office/supermarket/anywhere? Is "Shear Genius" your favorite reality TV show? Then you're going to love "Sally's Salon",the popular online game, which is now available from Apple's App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch for $4.99.

Taking advantage of Apple’s Multi-Touch user interface, you can help Sally build her business, by doing stylish do-overs which turn little old ladies into punk rockers or celebrities in 5 different locations, with 10 levels each: The Mall, Ski Resort, The Ritz, Ocean Pier and Star Studios.

If you satisfy the customer by choosing the correct style, they'll gain a heart. The more hearts a customer has by the end of the visit, the bigger the tip. Customers can also lose hearts if they're kept waiting for too long or if you stick them with a style they don't like, and will storm off in a huff if their heart count reaches zero

Wash, dye, cut, style and more in 50 levels of fashionable fun. I guarantee by the end of Sally Salon's 50 levels you'll know a Mohawk from a fauhawk, a flip from a pixie, and a buzz cut from a flattop.

"Sally's Salon" is the third game from RealNetworks for the iPhone and iPod touch. In addition to RealArcade's Collapse! Chaos, COMEDY CENTRAL's Emmy-Award winning "South Park Imaginationland" game is also available at Apple's App Store.

The Australians, not content to dive in the ocean deep with a mere shark cage, have taken to hopping in the water with 19.6ft long salt water crocodiles using nothing but 4cm of acrylic plastic to keep them safe. As the croc gnashes its teeth against the cage, you piss your pants, the wife takes some pics, and we once again reaffirm why dolphins are actually the dominant species on the planet.

The croc in question here, Choppa, was selected for this humiliating assignment because he lost two front teeth while fighting with some other 2,000lb. crocodiles at the Crocosaurus Cove amusement park.

"In the Northern Territory, the saltwater crocodile is an icon and is part of our life. They are always in the news, either in someone's swimming pool or killing someone's favorite horse," said Michael "That's not a knife, this is a knife" Scott, who opened the cage in July.

There have been no fatalities yet, although there are apparently some noticeable gashes in the plastic from the Choppa's remaining teeth.
Some of the stuff we buy from China is so cheap, that I wonder how they manage to cover even the shipping costs for the selling price. Now China's biggest shipping company COSCO is giving us a clue. They just signed a deal with Solar Sailor of Australia, to fit some of their cargo ships with gigantic rigid sails, each the size of a 747 jet's wing. We've looked before at small scale versions of the same idea, but never anything this huge

Under ocean going conditions, the sails provide enough thrust to reduce fuel consumption by 20-40 percent, while the solar panels covering them deliver power to the crew quarters and navigation electronics. The ship's ballast is provided by rechargeable batteries, which can drive the boat electrically if needed, and if you have a really stiff wind, the screws can be reversed to further charge the batteries. The giant sails can also be folded flat onto the deck if there's a threatening storm.
