Mahjong tiles come in all shapes and sizes, but this time round they come in the form of a USB flash drive. Known as the MahjongDisk, this prestigious handcrafted USB flash drive is modeled after a trio of Mahjong tiles stacked together. Of course, you will have to dig deep as the MahjongDisk retails for a whopping $400, constructed from wood material with drive capacities of either 8GB or 16GB. The Lan-Xue model will retail for another $100 compared to the Li-Shui, and both of them use materials normally found in classic Chinese furniture. Read and write speeds have been rated at 18MB/s and 15MB/s, respectively, courtesy of the onboard SLC memory module.

The scientists can't explain why this is happening. Some say they are somehow confused. Knowing the views in Brazil's beaches, I personally think they are not confused at all. Brazilian National Institute for Space Research climatologist Jose Marengo thinks the penguins—who are being airlifted back to its origin by the air force—got lost because of changes in the ocean circulation in the South Atlantic:

Clearly we've been seeing changes in the ocean circulation in the Southern Hemisphere. The question for the future, and we don't have an answer yet, is how is that going to shift against the backdrop of climate change?

The story here, however, is that the Brazilian Air Force is going to be flying the penguins back to South Atlantic, possibly in freezing chambers onboard cargo airplanes. Oh yes, and they are so cute that I'm about to have a diabetes arrest.

[Daily Mail]

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Nokia N96. Here are the key features, main disadvantages and final impression.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SOaC4fLqR9I/AAAAAAAA-Tc/CHPhDn8J_Mc/s320/n96.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253029922328954834" />

Key features:
•2.8" 16M-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
•5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and AF assist light
•Built-in DVB-H TV tuner
•Symbian OS 9.3 with S60 3.2 UI
•Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM
•3G with HSDPA support
•Quad-band GSM support
•Wi-Fi with UPnP technology
•Built-in GPS with A-GPS functionality and 3 months of free voice-guided navigation
•Dual slide design with dedicated gaming/audio keys
•Massive 16GB onboard storage
•microSD card slot with microSDHC support
•Built-in accelerometer for UI auto-rotation
•3.5 mm audio jack
•TV out
•Stereo FM Radio with RDS
•Car charger in the retail package
•VGA video recording at 30fps
•USB and Bluetooth v2.0
•One free N-gage game and Transformers movie preloaded
•Keypad locking slide key

Main disadvantages:
•Inadequate battery life
•No camera lens protection
•The @$$#% N81-inspired design
•No office document editing out of the box
•Doesn't charge via the USB port
•Dreadful camera key
•Cheap looking keypad
•Unreasonably hefty price tag

Maybe Nokia N96 wasn't really intended to take the market by storm and turn the world around. Maybe it was meant to quietly update the top multimedia gadget of the house and continue to cash in.

It just seems Nokia won't put all eggs in the same basket. And that makes us wondering. More high-end stuff will be available in affordable handsets, Arte will continue to define exquisite splendor, Eseries will go on blending exceptional skill with refined elegance and Touch UI will slowly be conquering the company portfolio. If all those assumptions are true, shall we fear the Nseries packed with features beyond belief but only getting uglier?

Tempted though we are to say that failure is looming over Nokia N96, we know better than that. There will be quite a lot of diehard Symbian fans (and even a few individuals that do actually need DVB-H support) that will go against their aesthetic sense and get the N96. And no, we don't think they will be disappointed or eager to agree with most of the things we said in this review.

As for the rest of the potential buyers - Nokia N96 is a great software package that comes in an utterly user-unfriendly shell. The ergonomics of the device are so poor (except for video watching) that operating it is a chore, rather than fun. Not to mention looks that are….oh well, controversial will have to do. It's just that when you dish out a healthy sum it's only fair to expect style and finesse. For all we know, style and finesse may have different meaning in the geek world and that's where the name of Nokia N96 sure rings a special bell.

I don’t mean that BenQ used a person called Tim to launch the S6 (though they may have had someone of that name working on the launch), no, no, no - BenQ have launched the Mobile Internet Device called the S6 with Italian Operator TIM!

There is an Intel Atom processor inside, along with 4.8″ screen, and 370g of weight to account for. 3.5G and WLAN radios are onboard for InterWeb access, and Bluetooth even makes an appearance!

Apparently the cost will be 429 EUR, which isn’t too harsh, although it is going to have to compete with the increasingly popular netbooks at that price point.

You can check out BenQ’s info on the S6 here.

Until now digital readers have been a great idea whose time hasn’t quite come. The good news: every new model gets better, and Sony’s latest Reader, the PRS-700 is the company's best yet. It has the dimensions of a slim paperback book and weighs a very portable 10 ounces. Better still, it has a touchscreen, letting you flip pages with the slide of a finger. The new model also adds LED reading lights on the sides of the 6-inch screen, making it easy to read in a darkened airplane cabin. Of course, that's going to suck your battery faster, draining it after just 8 hours (or 4 on the high setting).

The onboard memory can store about 350 books, and there are card slots for SD and Memory Stick Duo cards. With the included eBook Library 2.5 PC software you can transfer pdf documents and even music files to the Reader. Down the road there are plans for a wireless application (à la Amazon's Kindle) to get news on the go and generally expand the 700’s functionality. Right now it's strictly black-and-white, though. When pressed on when we could expect a color reader, Sony reps would only say it's still "years" away. But the mono-colored PRS-700 will be available in November for $300.

The new DSi will be 12 percent thinner, thanks to the loss of the GBA slot. In addition, not one but two cameras, an SD slot and some onboard storage. Content will be downloadable via WiFi and sold in a points system that sounds more than a little Microsoftish. Furthermore there will be a photosynching capability. Price ¥18,900 - about $180 [Engadget, Electronic House via Slashgear]

A lot can be learned from simply counting the cells found in a sample of blood or water; the rub is that it requires either a lengthy and complex manual process with an expensive microscope or a quicker process with an even more expensive flow cytometer. Now, UCLA researchers have devised a compact system that scans samples with a cheap CCD digicam sensor to quickly spot and count 100,000 different kinds of cells in a sample. Please note my resistance here to the general tendency to call any type of advanced portable medical scanner a real-life tricorder, but that's kind of what it's like.

The device works by placing the sample in close proximity to the sensor and beaming a strong light through it. The sensor doesn't take a scientifically useful photo, but rather looks for each cell's unique light diffraction signature to spot and count it. It compares each signature to its onboard cell database to distinguish healthy and infected cells of many different types almost instantly.

Not only does the system not require a lens or any particularly expensive components at all—the computer processing required is minimal and can be handled by a smartphone, making this incredibly ideal for bringing advanced medical diagnostics to places that currently don't have them. When ever I plug the charger into the sansa and try to play music across the onboard aux input I get a terrible eletical noise. Unplug the charger and it goes away. The charger will charge the Sansa just not happy I can't charge and listen at the same time.

Cheap and it works (2008-05-14)
Surprising to get at such price. I got it on time and works as advertised. I am pleased to bought it to charge in my car.

Excellent car charger (2007-06-05)
The charger is great. Instead of having to use the original charge which is big, this one is small and works the same, except there's no place to hold the garmin as it's in the bottom of it, so you have to hold it to look at it or keep it working. Otherwise it's nice.

tags : gadget
