Telecom operators around the globe have sped up the installation of femtocell networking equipment in order to expand their FMC (fixed mobile convergence) services – a move that is expected to generate a great deal of business opportunities for Taiwan networking device makers, Digitimes Research said in a recently held technology seminar.

The installation of femtocell networking equipment not only allows telecom operators to avoid huge investment in core networks amid the rising uncertainty of global economic conditions, but also helps strengthen their ARPU (average revenues per user) through the offering of FMC services, said Digitimes Research.

A number of telecom operators in the US, France, Singapore and Japan have pioneered FMC services, added Digitimes Research, noting that T-Mobile USA in the US and Orange in France have dramatically enhanced their mobile business through FMC services.

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), the largest telecom carrier in Taiwan, has said that it plans to launch trial femtocell services starting the fourth quarter of this year.

In view of the increasing popularity of femtocell, Digitimes Research further pointed out that most leading telecom equipment makers, including Samsung Electronics, Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, NEC, LG Nortel and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), have all begun producing femtocell equipment to cash in on the rising demand.

Consequently, Taiwan's network-equipment makers, including Zyxel Communications, Alpha Networks, Sercomm, and Tecom, who have mostly established mutual business relations with those branded telecom equipment vendors, have also committed R&D projects to the development and production of femtocell devices.

In addition, branded consumer networking device vendors such as Netgear and Linksys (a unit of Cisco Systems) have also begun venturing into the femtocell segment, providing additional femtocell business opportunities for Taiwan makers, Digitimes Research concluded.

source

Teraokaseiko, manufacturer of high quality digital scales, scale printers, weigh-wrap systems etc exhibited a touch panel display which can be operated by touching either side of the display at Sign & Display Show 2008, at Tokyo. In addition to finger movements such as tapping and sliding, the touch panel display recognizes the movement of pinching also. The pixel count of the inorganic EL panel is 256 × 120. It is an orange monochrome display. The light transmittances of the inorganic EL panel and the touch panel attached to it are both 80%. The display has a transmittance of 51.2%.

The display was made by attaching a resistive touch panel to the both sides of a transparent inorganic EL panel developed by Teraokaseiko. The display can be used to play games, mapping software etc.

Your typical soda fountain in a fast-food joint features eight boring choices, usually offering nothing more exotic than "Orange." It's been that way for decades, but one of the oldest players in the market is finally shattering that paradigm. Coca-Cola is introducing a machine that can pour 100 different flavors. Early prototypes underwent testing earlier this summer and second-gen units are headed for limited markets early next year -- the same thing they said about those self-cooling bottles last year. Assuming they do come to market, swapping out the highly-concentrated flavors is likened to changing a print cartridge, meaning new choices can come and go quickly depending on popularity. It all sounds refreshing, but we're not looking forward to the lines as the thirsty yet indecisive ponder 15 different flavors of Diet Coke.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

For all the T-Mobile subscribers out there who are this close to canceling their service because the company’s Internet is subpar, T-Mobile continues to quietly launch the faster 3G Internet service in various markets. The speedy cellular Internet should be in more than 20 markets by the end of the year, including Orange County, according to speculators at The Unofficial T-Mobile Blog.

So far, T-Mobile’s media guy tells me, its 3G service has launched in seven markets: New York City, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and San Antonio. But few markets had an official announcement. Why has the company been so shy about it? Perhaps it’s because they are the last of the major cell-phone carriers to offer 3G service.

Dave Henderson, with T-Mobile, remains tightlipped about the launch even though there is new excitement over the company because it may be the first with a Google phone (Android developers announced today that Android applications will get its own store!). But what he could tell me is this:

“We haven’t announced 3G pricing as of yet. For now, data pricing remains the same as it has been,” he said.

That means in the cities with 3G, users are paying a minimum of $19.99 a month for data — the cheapest plan available for smartphones. Data plans go up to $89.99/month for Internet and enterprise e-mail service on the Blackberry.

Comparably, 3G iPhone users are paying AT&T $40 a month for the unlimited data plans.

Of course, the only way to access those speeds — above 1 mbps — is to have a 3G phone.

And T-Mobile has several, Henderson said. These are the Nokia 6263, Samsung t639, Samsung t819 and the Nokia 3555. All are pictured below.

The company also just announced the Sony Ericsson TM506, which is T-Mobile’s first HSDPA-capable handset and pictured at the top right of this post. This phone should see an average data rate of 600 kbps and peak at 1 mbps, he added.

The Sony phone will be available in early September for $100. Features include a 2.0-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, TeleNav maps and, of course, Web access.

Maybe it’s not all Apple’s fault after all. French wireless carrier Orange has admitted to capping 3G network speeds at 384Kbps for iPhone customers, AppleInsider reports. Perhaps that’s why iPhone users on Germany’s T-Mobile network were reporting speeds as high as 1800Kbps while Orange customers’ data moved at a much slower pace. As with other carriers that recently launched the new iPhone 3G, Orange’s customer care lines lit up. In some cases, representatives were able to dramatically increase specific iPhone users’ speeds to as much as 3Mbps by simply altering some technical parameters. Orange told FranceInfo that the network speeds were capped to preserve network stability, but that it intends to raise the download cap for iPhone users to 1Mbps by Sept. 15.

It’s doubtful that will resolve the concern of many Orange customers that have signed a petition saying the artificial limitation is in direct violation of Orange’s service agreement, which should allow for HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps. And it’s likely to stoke the debate on whether iPhone 3G connection issues are the fault of Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) or the carriers. Is AT&T (NYSE: T) doing the same thing in the United States? Apple may not want to rustle the feathers of its carrier partners, but it would serve the company well to deflect criticism if it’s not a chipset or software problem that’s crippling iPhone 3Gs. If the blame rightfully belongs elsewhere, why hasn’t Apple said so? My guess is there’s a group of snafus gathering here, the fallout of which we’ll be seeing for some time to come.

source

Don’t you just hate it when you pay your hard earned cash to a company, expecting that they will render the best level of service possible to you, only to find out that the company has underserved you instead? Orange has recently admitted to artificially throttling the iPhone 3G’s speeds in France for customers, claiming that this decision was made in order for the network to be stable. In that case, can customers “throttle” our payments so that our monthly financial obligations can be stable, too? Just to let you know, iPhone 3G download speeds rarely hit 400Kbps, while those in Germany are touching 1.8Mbps on average. Good thing Orange has owned up to the error of their ways, and will increase 3G data speeds to 1Mbps come this September 15th.

Folks, be honest with us here -- did you really expect Orange and / or Apple to say anything other than this? Amidst reports that iPhone 3G line sitters at Polish Orange stores were actually paid to be there, the carrier has shot back in order to defend its dignity. In an e-mail reply to an Ad Age inquiry on the matter, a spokeswoman proclaimed that as "part of the excitement around the launch of the iPhone, some of [Orange's] team has been joining customers outside [of the] shops." She also noted that "sales were strong" and that Orange "was happy," though actual numbers were not revealed. So there you have it, now make of it what you will.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
