The PodSpot is one large industrial sized speaker system designed for your wee iPod - or any other Mp3 player for that matter. It’s splash proof and designed to be rugged enough for outdoor events. Surprisingly it’s battery powered pushing a multitude of tweeters, horns and two 10″ subwoofers good enough for 24 hours. If the 115 db don’t attract enough attention, I’m sure the sight of 50 people dancing their asses off will.

For the ultimate camouflage art, you need to check out some of these works by Liu Bolin.
The pictures are real and not photoshopped. Since it’s China, the designer decided to hire some people and paint them all over. Probably not too bad considering the low wages in China. (I heard it’s cheaper to hire 10,000 to dig holes with shovels than rent a John Deere.)

Those who are always looking for the latest innovations in tailgating will want to take a serious look at the Manvan. Designed by Aimee LoDuca, this oversized behemoth of a van targets football fans who need more nachos, more beer and just plain more of everything.

It’s inspired by the Nissan NV200, and can expand in the rear just like you after a huge meal. It will house almost everything that you need for indoor and outdoor use. We first told you about the Nissan NV200 almost a full year ago, but it’s still at a conceptual stage, despite being completely awesome and extremely useful. One day soon we hope to see it realized. Man’s first parties were in caves, man’s next parties will be in vans.

Nuforce Icon Desktop Amplifier

Need to juice up your desktop music scene? Nuforce has just the thing. Its new Icon is a miniature, multi-threat amplifier that can be used to pump music from a computer or audio player to your speakers and headphones. Nuforce builds high-performance Class D digital amps that put pricey competitors to shame, and the Icon is an insane hi-fi bargain at $250.

The Icon itself has a slick brushed aluminum enclosure, and given its size you could almost mistake it for a router, if not for the oversized volume and input knobs on the front.
Around back there's inputs for 3.5-mm and RCA cables, a USB connection, a line out to power a subwoofer, and RJ-45 (Ethernet) speaker cable ports.

Although it's only 12 watts per channel, the Icon is powerful enough to act as a pre-amp to full-fledged stereos, and on its own can drive most bookshelf speakers, producing a wide, spacious soundstage. I drag-raced it against beefier amps (at 50-60 watts), and the Icon's sound quality in the mid and high ranges — vocals, cymbals and keys, for instance — was every bit as smooth and detailed. The bigger amps could produce slightly deeper bass and cranked higher without distortion, but the Icon's overall dynamics were every bit as impressive.

I don't bother listening to music on my laptop because the sound quality from the headphone jack is thin and distorted, not to mention the occasional pops and crackles. But when I hooked up the Icon via the USB port and patched in my Grado SR80 cans, it was a revelation. The Icon uses a high-quality digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to convert the computer's digital signal to sweet-sounding analog, and alla sudden the music was crystal clear, the bass cleaner and deeper, and the overall sound infinitely better. The only downside here may be that you'll realize how crummy some of those downloaded MP3s actually sound.

The Icon is also a solid headphone amp, and will improve the sound from an iPod or any other audio player's output. If you've never tried out a headphone amp before, the difference can be striking, assuming you have a decent set of cans. In the end, the beauty of the Icon is that it can be used in so many different ways – I've got it powering some outdoor speakers on my patio – and it excels wherever you rig it. —Christopher Jones

WIRED Sturdy silicon-like stand holds it vertically. Rad design and color choices: red, black, blue, silver. Small enough to take on vacation.

TIRED Ethernet speaker cables are cutting edge, but standard banana plugs would be better. Bass can be a touch thin in heavier (rock, hip hop) music.

$250, nuforce.com

Highly Scalable, Secure WLAN Enables an Enhanced eLearning Experience with Voice, Video and Data Application Support

SAN JOSE, Calif. – 27 August 2008 – The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that it has deployed a campus-wide wireless LAN (WLAN) for Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, one of the top universities in China. The campus-wide WLAN will enable multimedia Internet-based teaching, automatic academic office management, Internet access, long-distance teaching and many other services. Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications is one of the few universities in China to provide complete wireless LAN coverage to every building in addition to the campus’ outdoor spaces.

“With its high performance and scalability, Motorola’s wireless LAN solutions will provide the university with reliable, end-to-end coverage, security and manageability both outdoors and inside academic and administrative buildings, hostels, and canteens,” said Jian-Zheng Xu, campus network manager, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. “Motorola is helping us realize our goal of managing and teaching through the WLAN network to provide convenience to the lecturers and enhance the students’ learning experiences.”

The Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications WLAN features Motorola solutions for indoor and outdoor coverage, enabling an all-wireless enterprise. To deliver campus-wide coverage spanning more than 4.5 million square feet and with the potential to support 15,000 users, the WLAN required 600 access points (APs) including Motorola AP300 wireless access ports and mesh-enabled AP-5131 access points. The campus also utilizes Motorola’s highly scalable RFS7000 RF switch which features the Wi-NG architecture and the RF Management suite. The mesh connectivity of the AP-5131 complements the existing wired network points and extends the WLAN outdoors blanketing virtually every open space across the university.

Motorola’s enterprise WLAN solution centrally manages all the wireless APs and integrates with the telecommunications network. This enables the IT management team to control and monitor the entire wireless network at the campus network center to ensure that the system is able to automatically detect and report any AP errors and, seamlessly, adjust the power of nearby APs to compensate for blind spot areas. The system can provide backup data for two campuses so that the WLAN coverage will not be affected if either the wireless network or wired network is disrupted. Additionally, the Motorola WLAN provides state-of-the art security with support for Wi-Fi protected access (WPA) and WPA2. The inclusion of a wireless intrusion protection system (WIPS) further enhances security by monitoring, detecting, protecting and helping prevent intrusions to the wireless network.

The WLAN at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications will enable wireless Internet access for its lecturers, students, staff and distinguished visitors at any location on the campus. User verification is managed through a central verification platform at the campus network center to ensure security, stability and manageability of the network.

“Motorola’s wireless switches and AP distribution technology are ideal for large-scale WLAN deployments in education, healthcare, and the hospitality industry,” said Steve Choi, general manager of Greater China, Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Business. “Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications is a pioneer in deploying an indoor and outdoor wireless LAN to enhance the learning experience.”

Enterprise WLAN is part of Motorola’s portfolio of innovative wireless broadband solutions and services that complement and complete internet protocol (IP) networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces both indoors and outdoors, the portfolio includes fixed broadband, mesh, broadband over powerline, WiMAX and Enterprise WLAN solutions for private and public networks.

Revenue has been recorded in previous periods.

You want outdoors audio to compliment your peaceful garden but you don’t want something pumping out sound which looks like your dad’s subwoofer. Polk Audio thinks it has an answer to your prayers with its new Atrium outdoor speaker system, consisting of the Atrium Sat 30 satellite speaker and Atrium Sub 10 subwoofer, priced at around $180 and $330, respectively.

The Atrium Sat 30, according to Polk, looks like an outdoor light fixture in shape and style. It can be mounted in a variety of spaces, looking like it was made to fit into your garden. The Sat 10 subwoofer, meanwhile, resembles something like that of a plant stand or pedestal table. Both reportedly “are constructed from sealed, weatherproof designs,” meaning you should be able to enjoy them even in the pouring rain.

Polk says the Sat 10 includes a “10-inch long-throw driver gives authoritative bass response down to 50 Hz, while the acoustically-matched two-way satellites provide smooth, vivid sonics out to an impressive 18 KHz, resulting from Polk Audio’s use of a 3 ½” midrange driver and ¾” dome tweeter.” Does that get you hot? You’ll have until January to ponder that, when these products are due to be released. Doesn’t it seem though they should have been released this summer?

Here’s a funny video proving that Fortune Cookies are in fact, from America itself. It’s funny but maybe Fortune Cookies were invented by the Chinese Americans to lure more customers. Go to China, they don’t even know what a Fortune Cookie is.

But I can understand that, they have Chinese food in Korea that they don’t have in America, it’s called Korean-Chinese food. Fortune Cookies are definitely American-Chinese food, speaking of which, there’s all these non-authentic Chinese food chains popping up. (and yes, they taste horrible to an authentic Asian mouth.)

Clearly not. They are arguably more American (by way of Japan), judging by the way that people in China react to fortune cookies — with a mixture of confusion and amusement. As part of research for my book, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, I went around China handing out fortune cookies to random people (my bellhop, people on the street, vendors) and recorded their reactions.

Often times, they would put the cookies in their mouth, and then be surprised when they found a piece of paper either in their mouth or in a cookie.

When I think of a van, I think of something a family owns: a “Soccer Mom” van, or one of those “full of crap” vans that a hectic multi-child family owns. The “Man”, as the Manvan defines it, is not one who would put up with foolish children delivering or cross-country-to-grandmother’s-house treks with family, no! The Manvan tends to to football loving man, the man who wants to watch hugescreen television in an empty parking-lot man, the strange future man!

The Manvan is fully customizable, easily accessable at the Manvan website, where you can choose from a full array of Manvan accessories and colors. As the designer, Aimee LoDuca puts it: “Manvan revolutionizes the traditional “soccer mom mini-van” and transforms it into the ultimate getaway for man, customizing its features to suite any lifestyle. Influenced by the Nissan NV200, the vans extendable back allows for the most outrageous amenities, as well as indoor and outdoor use.”

For you readers: I’ve just received my custom Manvan from Ms. LoDuca, so I will be taking a leave of absence so that I might play Diablo 3, which isn’t out yet, on the secret Chinese internet Manvan satellite in the forests of Montana, where I can be at peace.*

*Just kidding; Manvan does not yet exist, but I would not object to playing video games in the forest.

UPDATE: As you can see by the second photo photo from the bottom of this post, the Manvan is basically an alternate version of the very real Nissan NV200. Stay keen!
Thanks S.C. for the should-have-been-obvious tip!
