Well, recent study concludes that your iPod earphones can cause hearing loss. Of course, I can admit to losing hearing over the last couple years while listening to my iPod and iPod Touch. My wish is that there’s a successful class lawsuit against Apple so I can get some money. I don’t mind the hearing loss that much but free money is always good. Just be careful though, don’t listen to that rock and roll too loud, use your common sense.

The report said that those who listened for five hours a week at high-volume settings exposed themselves to more noise than permitted in the noisiest factory or work place. Maximum volume on some devices can generate as much noise as an airplane taking off nearby.

The Scientific Committee opinion argues that if users of personal music players listen for only five hours a week at volumes exceeding 89 decibels, that level would exceed the current limits in place for noise allowed in the work place.

Last year in Britain, the Royal National Institute for Deaf People warned that more than two-thirds of young people who regularly use MP3 players faced premature hearing damage.

Shares of Research in Motion moved higher on Thursday on renewed market speculation that Microsoft could be interested in buying the BlackBerry maker.

"Microsoft has been mentioned as a possible buyer," said Frederic Ruffy, an analyst at options education firm Optionetics in California.

"According to speculation, the software giant might be interested in RIM in response to recent news that Google is interested in making its own mobile-phone operating system, which would compete with Windows Mobile," he added.

RIM shares were up 3.35 percent at $84.59 in midday trading Thursday after posting a new high of $85 on the Nasdaq.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company's shares regularly move as much as 5 percent in a single session, even in the absence of news. The Microsoft rumor has surfaced in the past, as well as speculation that Motorola could buy the Canadian company.

Analysts have heaped upgrades and praise on RIM in recent weeks in wake of strong growth, both in profit and in subscribers.

The company's ubiquitous BlackBerry smart phones have penetrated the professional market, but have yet to gain the same acceptance among retail consumers.

To change this, RIM has been loading up its devices with multimedia features like music players and cameras. It has also worked with carriers to make them more affordable to individuals.

The push into consumer markets could put RIM on a collision course with Apple's iPhone. The competition could grow stiffer still if Google launches its own device.

Some option traders appeared to be betting that RIM shares' strength could continue.

"I've seen the rumors on RIM and there has been interest in the front-month calls, which allow investors to buy RIM shares at $80 all the way to $93.375 apiece," said Rebecca Engmann Darst, an equity options analyst at Interactive Brokers Group.

Both RIM and Microsoft declined to comment.

"It is RIM's standard policy to not comment on rumors or speculation," a RIM spokeswoman said in an e-mail. A Microsoft representative echoed the statement.

Among the busiest calls were the September $93.375 series as more than 8,000 lots moved early on Thursday. The odd strike price is due to a recent stock split in RIM, Ruffy said.

"The heavy trading in these out-of-the-money calls seems to reflect speculative call buying on the view the share price will continue moving higher during the next few weeks," Ruffy said. The September contacts come off the board on September 21.

Jon Najarian, co-founder of Web information site optionmonster.com in Chicago, also noted a rise in RIM's September implied volatility, a measure of the expected magnitude of share price movement conveyed by option prices.

When RIM shares were up 2.25 percent Thursday morning, the at-the-money September implied volatility stood at around 49 percent above its average 44 percent over the past week, he said.

"That indicates there is demand for options but the paper is mixed," he said. "The stock hit a new 52-week high this morning and the shorts were covering their positions. But we don't show any panic buying. The options action is interesting but so far not heavy according to our model."

source

In scouring the Sunday newspapers, I found an insert for 5 new customised Laptop casings from Dell, which have been patterned-up by an artist called Mike Ming. For our UK readers, that name may cause some amusement due to the usage of the term in current-day language, but nonetheless I persist with my article.

So, I was pondering, as I checked out these new customised case patterns, who is going to buy them? Obviously Dell did their Market Research, but I struck an immediate mental picture of all the case customisation effort that have come and gone on Mobiles - think of the various players who have been involved (I used to work for one of them), and most of the big boys have tried this, with limited success (as far as I understand).

So what will make the Dell Laptop case patterns successful? Well, perhaps the right demographic exists, and perhaps the ‘Halo effect’ of having the Laptops on the site will draw users to look at and buy other things…

At any rate, what do the IntoMobile readers reckon to the case art?

You can go to Dell’s global site here, and then it’s navigation to select and customise your Inspiron Laptop that will let you see the art in detail.

When you break them apart wish-bone style, they can still function as standalone MP3 players, but the playlist in each will be identical to each other…forever. The creator, Liberty Fearns, explains: “The unit must first be snapped in half in order to become functional, creating a formal ritual shared between two people. Music is uploaded to a shared online play list, which will only download new music when both MP3 players are in their docks, so that audio content always remains the same.
So, is there a future in co-dependent MP3 players for couples like Muffy and Buffy with the matching sweaters tied around their waist? Who knows. Might be good for love-struck teens. I find the whole thing creepy and really don’t want to speak of it again.

Can you hardly bear to be apart from your partner for more than half an hour? Do you make out in the library while sitting next to a Gizmodo writer, totally unaware that someday he'll grumpily complain about you in a post? Well, I have the perfect mp3 player for you and your equally annoying significant other. The Twinned MP3 Player concept is actually two mp3 players, capable of holding only one playlist each: the same one.

When combined, in that adorable spooning position, you can plug 'em into the computer to load your songs, but when separated, they can only play back the tunes you and your partner have chosen together. Just the one playlist. Forever. At least it's easier to throw away than a matching tattoo. It's definitely just a concept for now, with no mention of basics like how you control the thing, let alone price or release date.
