Shred Easy is a name that’s pretty much self-explanatory - it specializes in churning out shredders that are an important fixture at any office, gobbling up important information and making sure that said document suffers a similar fate as Humpty Dumpty, where nobody who takes a look at the post-shredding handiwork will be able to piece together the original. This time round, Shred Easy has unveiled yet another member to its range of mobile shredding devices known as the Urban Shredder. It is tipped that the Urban Shredder will be a common sight in city centers sometime in the near future throughout the UK from 23rd November onwards, offering on-site shredding services.

Shred Easy wants to be the market leader in producing a mobile shredding vehicle that offers a comprehensive document destruction service which is also able to minimize carbon emissions in the process. The result? A smaller, lighter and quieter vehicle for onsite document destruction. The Urban Shredder is able to go about its business despite running on a more compact engine compared to its predecessors, while the reduced weight results in less oil and even less fuel during normal transit and shredding processes. This will translate to a higher level of cost efficiency, aiding environmental benefits while lowering noise levels by a reasonable amount.

The Urban Shredder weighs 7.5 tons and is touted to be the “most advanced mobile document destruction unit operating in the UK today”. It packs in 180 horse power to bring secure destruction services to your door, literally placing it streets ahead of the competition. It also measures 6 meters in length, rendering it the shortest mobile shredding in the market to date. Being highly maneuverable, the Urban Shredder is able to provide you with the best portable shredding service ever experienced, if you give it a go, that is. If you want to do your bit for the environment, give the Urban Shredder a go. After all, all paper will be recycled and trees will be planted on behalf of customers and vehicles scheduled on green routes.

Last week, you probably noticed new computers from Dell, Gateway and others using a brand new, bizarre-sounding chip from Intel: the Core i7. You might have even seen some benchmarks and features showing that this is a real beast of processor. Well, we're pretty excited about the Core i7, so here's a quick guide to why it's so awesome:

Hokay, so the way Intel develops chips is on what it calls the "tick-tock cycle". The "tick" is the improvement of its current microarchitecture, mainly shrinking it down to make it more energy efficient, along with other tweaks. As you now can guess, the "tock" indicates the launch of a totally new microarchitecture.

Penryn, for instance, was the tick to the Core 2's tock, shrinking it down from a 65-nanometer process to 45nm. Core i7 is a tock, using a completely new microarchitecture codenamed Nehalem. Core i7 Nehalem is actually a dramatic step forward, remedying several lingering Intel architecture deficiencies that AMD actually had them beat on years ago. So, here are four things that specifically make the new chip awesome:

Bye Bye Front-Side Bus
The ancient front-side bus setup has long been a drag on Intel's chips, and they're finally ditching it. The FSB essentially carried data between the CPU and memory controller hub (which is also out the window, more on that in a sec), but that didn't work so well when you started talking buckets of cores. In its place is a new tech called QuickPath Interconnect that'll make the old bottlenecks history and running tons of cores even better. QPI uses direct point-to-point connections that have a bandwidth of about 25GB/s, way faster than what FSB could offer. The downside is that it requires a new QPI-friendly motherboard. This concept is kind of cribbed from AMD, whose HyperTransport has been doing something similar for a longass time.

Integrated Memory Controller and Triple-Channel Memory
You might notice a pattern that a lot of Nehalem's performance boosts have to do with better access to memory and fatter bandwidth. Yet another tech that AMD held over Intel's head for years is an integrated memory controller, which Core i7 finally uses. Basically this just means that the memory controller is on the same die as the CPU, cutting down memory latency. Before, with Intel chips, communication had to take place across the front-side bus, making stuff slooooow. The last memory bonus is that Core i7 supports triple-channel memory. Right now, you're probably on a computer using dual-channel memory (in English, I mean that it uses RAM sticks in sets of two). Core i7 will make three sticks of RAM the new standard—so keep an eye out for plenty of 6GB and 12GB systems running around.

The Return of Hyper-Threading
Intel abandoned Hyper-Threading after the Pentium 4, but it's back in Core i7 (and Atom, but really, psh). Basically, it's a parallel-processing tech that runs multiple threads simultaneously. In English, it divvies up tasks so they can be crunched by a processor simultaneously, instead of one after the other. It short, it makes video encoding and other parallel-friendly processes run faster. We're interested to see what kind of gains this will produce in tandem with programs coded to take advantage of threading, not to mention the next great operating systems, Snow Leopard and Windows 7, which will supposedly make better use of multiple cores and parallel processing than current OSes.

Built-In Power Management and Overclocking
Core i7 is pretty much a beast already, but whereas Intel used to say that overclocking was bad for your processor, now with the Core i7, it's built right in. The Core i7 is really aggressive with power management, more so than Core 2, so it'll sip juice when it's not busy, and then crank the power when it needs it. In the BIOS now, you can set it to overclock the CPU in certain situations, and customize that by thermal ratings so it won't overheat.

So yeah, Core i7 gets our engines running, and we're not even chip nerds. (Honest!) Sadly though, right now there are just a few Core i7 chips available, and they're all for desktops. There's not much of a downside for portables—save for the need for new motherboards and the DDR3 RAM already used by premium laptops—but before you see it in a Dell XPS notebook or MacBook Pro, you're going to see it in a lot of desktop gaming and graphics-intensive systems. Laptops probably won't appear until way into next year, but we think they'll be well worth the wait.

Something you still wanna know?
With help from PDP, third-party developers offer applications that provide financial market data, streamline home care processes, offer golf tips and more to Sprint customers

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., --...

With help from PDP, third-party developers offer applications that provide financial market data, streamline home care processes, offer golf tips and more to Sprint customers

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., -- Continuing its leadership in employing an open strategy, Sprint (NYSE: S) announced that CellTrak Technologies Inc. was the first member of Sprint's Professional Developer Program (PDP) to receive Sprint certification of its application, CellTrak(TM). CellTrak enables home care and hospice providers to schedule their visits and be able to locate staff as they travel from home to home using GPS technology, which improves patient satisfaction, reduces errors and enables accurate reporting of visit data, mileage and more. Using access to location-based services and technology support provided through the Sprint PDP, CellTrak ported their application from Nextel phones to Sprint phones to meet the needs of their growing customer base.

"With the Professional Developer Program, Sprint is offering serious developers enhanced tools to encourage them to create new content for Sprint devices, be able to move quickly from ideation to final product, and ensure the quality of those applications for our customers," said Len Barlik, vice president of wireless and wireline services for Sprint. "We're seeing those tools pay off as several PDP members have received certification to offer their applications to Sprint customers, just a few months after the launch of the program."

"CellTrak was honored to be the first application to pass the Sprint Professional Developer Program's on-boarding process," said Steve Wegner, chief technology officer for CellTrak Technologies. "The PDP is a must for any company that is serious about delivering a quality product on the Sprint network."

Eleven additional PDP members also have completed certification of their applications:

Acuity Mobile received Sprint certification for its application, which offers businesses a context-based mobile marketing solution that enables Spot Relevance(TM), sophisticated content targeting based on consumer or loyalty program data and user location. The solution provides the ability to create Spot Relevant content and promotional offers that are distributed through an application, text message or WAP site.
Blue Systems received Sprint certification for blue mobile(TM), a real-time financial market data application that provides professional and retail investors with one of the fastest, smartest ways to analyze global stock market information around the clock. blue mobile(TM) provides more content and coverage, over more handsets than any other provider worldwide.
ChaCha received Sprint certification for its application, which is a revolutionary new free mobile answers service for people on the go. ChaCha allows people to ask any question in conversational English and receive an answer as a text message in a few minutes. ChaCha is available by calling 1-800-2ChaCha or by texting 242242 (ChaCha) (standard text messaging rates apply).
Citrix Systems Inc. received certification for its XenApp Plugin for Windows Mobile devices. With more than 100 million users and 99 percent of the Fortune Global 500 as customers, Citrix(R) XenApp(TM) is the industry's de facto standard for delivering Windows-based applications with some of the best performance, security and cost savings.
- MobiWatch received Sprint certification for its personal safety services. Users who need assistance can press the button on the revolutionary Bluetooth MobiFob to speak with professional emergency responders. They'll use the customer's confidential personal profile and real-time location tracking to get the user the help they need. MobiWatch is inexpensive, works with most Sprint phones and requires no software downloads.
Oomble received Sprint certification for its mobile client, which interacts with the Oomble Web site to provide users a real-time view into the content that resides on their mobile phones. Through the Oomble Web site, users are able to manage that content, such as uploading mobile photos to the Web or downloading personal music to the handset, without ever touching the phone.
ROAM Data received Sprint certification for ROAMcommerce, which allows direct selling professionals to enter orders, perform inventory lookup, check commission status and process payment (credit cards and personal checks) -- all in real time and directly from their mobile phones.
SnapNow(TM) received Sprint certification for SnapApp, a mobile visual search application. SnapNow, using its patented process, provides a powerful mobile marketing solution that connects the real world to the Web through the snap of a camera phone. SnapNow links images taken by any camera phone to content on the mobile Web, similar to the way other search engines link words to search results.
Useful Networks received Sprint certification for Sniff, a friend-finder enhancement to open social network applications. The application is designed to allow registered, consenting friends to invite and locate each other via their Sprint handsets using the location capabilities of the Sprint platform.
WellDoc Communications Inc. received Sprint certification for Measures Of Success, a rich offering of services to help make living with asthma easier.
YouCaddy received Sprint certification for YouCaddy, a mobile phone application for golfers to improve their golf game with GPS range-finding, course map-viewing, game tracking, replaying, sharing, and money saving on discounted green fees and equipment.
In addition to the 12 companies with PDP-certified applications, 17 additional PDP member companies are currently testing new products to reach certification, and another 25 companies are in the process of becoming members of the PDP.

The PDP is part of Sprint's Application Developer Program, which was first established in 2001. Sprint's Professional Developer Program provides advanced tools for members to create, test and certify wireless applications that customers can use on Sprint phones. The advanced capabilities include:

Access to the majority of Sprint's restricted APIs (including GPS, address book, messaging) required to permit more sophisticated applications
Dedicated technical support
Access to the certification process

The PDP's certification process is a way for members to create applications and communicate to customers that the product has been tested and approved to function correctly on Sprint phones.

Developers who would like to join the PDP can visit the Sprint Application Developer Program Web site at www.sprint.com/developer and click "Working with Us."

Sprint is committed to offering mobile content and applications to its customers when, where and how they want them:

Sprint has employed an open Internet approach, and the Sprint Application Developer Program has been providing tools for third-party developers since Sprint first launched the Wireless Web on its phones in 2001.
Through relationships with third parties, hundreds of non-Sprint-branded applications, games and other digital media may be downloaded from the mobile Internet to operate on Sprint phones.
More than 200 different non-Sprint-branded devices, from machine-to-machine to telemetry, operate on the Sprint network through a widely respected device certification process.
Sprint is a member the Open Handset Alliance, along with more than 30 other participating companies, supporting the free and open mobile applications platform named Android.

About Sprint Nextel

Sprint Nextel offers a comprehensive range of wireless and wireline communications services bringing the freedom of mobility to consumers, businesses and government users. Sprint Nextel is widely recognized for developing, engineering and deploying innovative technologies, including two wireless networks serving nearly 51 million customers at the end of the third quarter 2008; industry-leading mobile data services; instant national and international push-to-talk capabilities; and a global Tier 1 Internet backbone.

Me battery done. Where me charger?

Aha! Finally the culprit to my quickly-depleting battery is becoming clearer… and I blame push-sync!

Previously on IntoMobile we had suggested tips for extending the battery life (here), and I followed up with my investigations on to what could be the primary battery hogs (here). Having turned off pretty much all the radios in my device, I was then left with only a couple of candidates:

• Any apps/processes I was unaware of that could be running (and eating power)
• Anything specific that was running in the background (i.e. push sync)

A restart cured me of any hangover processes that might be running, which left me with one candidate – push-sync! This is now turned off, and so my calendar (the thing that was being synced) is now only synced when I open the app specifically – in a very manual fashion.

You see, it’s all very well having all the radios and network dependent apps turned on if you have access to a mains charger, but otherwise they can (and do) give the battery a bit of a kicking. So right now I am running:

GPS – OFF
3G – OFF
BLUETOOTH – OFF
WIFI – OFF
REGULAR FETCH (for email) – OFF
PUSH – OFF

You might argue that this limits the functionality of the device somewhat, and do you know what, I’d agree… but this process was designed to find out what exactly it was that “canes” the battery – as a raver would say!

Now that I’m aware of what the key battery killers are, the next thing is to find out whether things I would like to either use, or leave on, are also battery shredders. Those things would be 3G radio functionality, and also Bluetooth – since having that on is great for auto-connecting to my car kit.

It ain’t over yet – next time I hope to have a definitive set of suggestions in order to combine functionality and battery life. But it would be great if Apple could aggregate all these features in to one place with a series of graphical switches (as our readers have suggested) – then you could alter ad-hoc as you pleased! Apple, are you listening?

Ben

I'm tired of this. This sense of permanent discomfort with the technology around me. The bugs. The compromises. The firmware upgrades. The "This will work in the next version." The "It's in our roadmap." The "Buy now and upgrade later." The patches. The new low development standards that make technology fail because it wasn't tested enough before reaching our hands. The feeling now extends to hardware: Everything is built to end up in the trash a year later, still half-baked, to make room for the next hardware revision. I'm tired of this beta culture that has spread like metastatic cancer in the last few years, starting with software from Google and others and ending up in almost every gadget and computer system around. We need a change.

Take the iPhone, for example, one of the most successful products in the history of consumer electronics. We like it, I love mine, but the fact is that the first generation was rushed out, lacking basic features that were added in later releases or are not here yet. Worse: The iPhone 3G was really broken. For real. Bad signal, dropped calls, frozen apps. This would have been unthinkable in cellphones just five years ago. They were simpler, for sure, but they were failure proof. Today's engineering and testing is a lot more sophisticated. In theory, products can't go out into distribution with such glaring problems undetected.

Another recent example is my iMac 24, which had the infamous video card problem out of the box. How can a machine with such an obvious problem—instantly detected by the user base—be sold like that? The same happened recently with Nvidia video boards. In fact, graphic cards—being always in the cutting edge of technology—are perfect examples of beta hardware being sold as final hardware, with many released with beta-quality drivers and requiring firmware patches.

From that to the now-universally-accepted Blue Screen of Death, from buggy Blu-ray players to the Xbox 360's red ring of death and PS3's bugs, even from kitchen ovens to faulty DSLR cameras, the list of troubled products is endless. Just this week, the eagerly anticipated BlackBerry Storm launched to mixed reviews, in part because of its crashy, apparently unfinished software.

On the other side, my parents have a Telefunken CRT TV and a Braun radio from the '70s which are still in working condition. They were first generation. They never failed. Compare that to my first plasma TV from Philips, which broke after less than a year of use. Mine wasn't the only one. The technology was too young to be released; it was still in beta state. Philips wanted to be the first in the world with a flat TV and beat the competition, so they released it. This probably wasn't a good move: Today, Philips' TV business is struggling, and is nonexistent in the US. Meanwhile, my Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Apple IIe from the 1980s still work like they did from day one, perfectly.

For sure, today's products are far more complex than those of 20 or 30 years ago. But back then, the manufacturing was also a lot worse. It was less automated, often purely manual, and imperfect. Today, in a world where automated factories run 24/7, there's less chance of error. Yet still, there are countless problems in the final products, and those problems affect every unit in an entire model line. In the age of manufacturing perfection, there are still major recalls concerning products that burn or break.

Clearly, the problem is the development process and the time to market, with product cycles shortened and corners cut to keep a continuous stream of cash flowing in. The rush to feed these cycles with increasingly more complex engineering seems to be at odds with shortened development and quality assurance processes, resulting in beta-state first-generation products. This beta culture, the same one that already plagues the web, breeds people who are willing to accept bugs in the name of cutting-edge gear.

Who's to blame? Google and their web apps? Apple and their iPhone 3G problems? Microsoft and their countless buggy versions of operating systems and the Xbox 360's RROD? Philips? Sony? Samsung? LG? We all are. The manufacturers, who are driven by a thirst to expand and satisfy their shareholders at all costs. The consumers, who are so thirsty to drink in the shiniest, newest technology that they are willing to sacrifice stability. And the press too, who pours more gasoline onto the consumerism bonfire by writing glowing reviews and often minimizing things that are simply not acceptable.

Personally, I'm tired of all this. But I'm mostly tired about the fact that it seems that we all have given up. Tired because now we see "upgrades" as an opportunity to protect our investment, but in reality, it's laziness and a poor job on the manufacturer part that we have accepted without questioning. Instead of calling foul play and refusing to participate, we keep buying.

That's the key: We have surrendered in the name of progress and marketing and product cycles and consumerism. Maybe those are good reasons, I don't know, but looking at the past, it feels like we are being conned. Deceived because the manufacturers of electronic products have taken our desire to progress faster and even embrace the web beta culture as an excuse to rush things to market, to blatantly admit bugs and the rushed features sets and sell the patches as upgrades.

Maybe the recession will put some order in this thirst of new stuff and change the product cycles. As the economy slows down, people will think twice before buying the latest and greatest; they'll keep older hardware for longer. Then, manufacturers will have to rethink their product lines, and lift their feet from the accelerator, which will result on slower cycles and better products. Maybe that's our ticket for better electronics that actually make sense.

Or maybe... maybe that will be another excuse for the manufacturer to cut even more corners and keep lowering prices so that consumers keep spending and ending up with worse products than we have now.

Hitachi Maxell will launch the world’s first iVDR for commercial broadcasting, iVDR Xtreme, which features significantly higher shock resistance, and a compatible adapter from December. Maxell iVDR Xtreme features heightened shock resistance and outstanding functionality for editing processes in broadcasting operations. The reverberation of external shocks from the case to the hard disc drive is inhibited by a buffer material that separates the hard disc drive from the case. Consequently, iVDR Xtreme is resistant to shocks from falls of 140cm. The compatible adaptor for iVDR Xtreme incorporates USB and IEEE 1394b (FireWire 800) interfaces. Therefore, according to the application required, iVDR Xtreme can be connected to cameras, editing equipment, and PCs compatible with USB or IEEE 1394b (FireWire 800) hosts. In addition, the adapter includes a lock function to prevent iVDR Xtreme falling out even when the adapter is being carried.

Maxell’s iVDRs are the first removable cassette-type hard disk drives to incorporate copyright protection technology. Compatible with SATA (Serial ATA) interfaces, which enable high-speed data transfer, Hitachi iVDR Xtreme realizes advanced performance for hi-vision-quality recording and editing. Hitachi iVDR Xtreme promises to become a bridge media that will complement nonlinear editing networks in the broadcasting industry by enabling the transfer or storage of material data and edited content.

Forms GSMA partnership to drive development of embedded mobile connectivity

[2008 GSMA Mobile Asia Congress, Macau – 19 November 2008] Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions worldwide, has announced that to date it has shipped over 20 million mobile broadband units to over 115 countries covering Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, North America, Middle East and Africa. Having worked closely with more than 230 international operators, Huawei' s mobile broadband is the preferred choice for operators around the world.

The growth in mobile broadband products including data card, dongles and embedded modems has far exceeded the forecast of the industry in 2006 and 2007 for two consecutive years. Over the next three years, industry analysts expect the mobile broadband market to grow at an amazing Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 46%, with annual shipments reaching 100 million by 2011.

"Huawei has emerged as the gold standard in partnering with operators for mobile broadband devices. Its proven ability to focus on operators' needs, to provide differentiated customization, including award-winning industrial designs, and to deliver robust applications suites has been recognized by operators globally," said Edward Chen, CEO of Huawei Communication Technologies. "Huawei' s robust R&D systems and processes are engineered to ensure a fast response to meet operators' terminal customization requirements. This has helped it achieve a commanding position in mobile broadband products. As the market leader, Huawei is firmly committed in its efforts to driving worldwide broadband penetration and the fast evolution of this technology."

Huawei also revealed today a partnership with GSMA, the global trade body for the mobile industry. The two have joined forces to help the mobile industry realize the huge potential market for consumer and industrial goods that can connect to 3G mobile networks. The cooperation will initially focus on bringing the benefits of continuous mobile connectivity to consumer electronics. Devices with embedded mobile connections can automatically exchange images, information and other data with mobile phones, computers or the Internet. The cooperation will help Huawei put forward more innovative products and solutions to people, business and society as a whole.

We knew that radiation from mobile phone could affect biological processes, but we had no idea that the cellphone pasted to our face could make the fillings in our teeth actually leak mercury.

A new study from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences indicates that the electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones can actually interfere with the metallic fillings in our mouths and might even cause mercury to leak into our bodies. The study wasn’t comprehensive or large enough to make draw any solid conclusions, but it seems that cellphone use and higher mercury levels in urine are correlated.

That’s enough to make us use our Bluetooth headsets that much more.
