The well-scooped TM506 from Sony Ericsson is now on sale, marking the first time that T-Mobile has openly and proudly admitted that a handset in its lineup can actually support 3G -- despite the fact that they've had such gear for over a year now. Why the big secret? Until now, T-Mobile's 3G network has been undergoing pretty much the softest soft launch in mobile history, and only now are enough markets starting to come on board to make the whole thing worthwhile. For what it's worth, every previous 3G handset on the carrier has merely rocked UMTS, so the TM506 becomes its first HSDPA-equipped piece while also offering up a 2-megapixel cam, TeleNav navigation, and stereo Bluetooth. As of this writing it's still showing "Coming Soon" on the site, but we're hearing that it'll be available today for $79.99 after rebate on contract.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Digitalis Education Solutions Inc. is one of the leading manufacturers of planetarium audio and video equipment. Recently they proudly announced the release of their latest DLP projector system. The Digitarium Epsilon uses a high-quality proprietary fisheye lens and a specialized computer control unit to deliver high-resolution and high brightness. This system is able to project a 1200 pixel diameter circular image, completely covering any planetarium dome up to 43 feet in diameter. The Epsilon projection system is the first DLP-based, single lens system that is able to give complete dome coverage. The advantage to this system is its single lens projection. This allows the dome to be completely covered with out having to overlap multiple projector images. It also delivers uninterrupted sky simulation and bypasses all the problems that come with multi-projector systems. The Epsilon is also able to display images and video onto a dome and is not limited to just sky charts. Unfortunately the Digitarium Epsilon system does not come cheap. It is set to retain for about $60000.

But Motorola rival Samsung Electronics was an official sponsor of the Olympics, and Chinese officials decreed that no other company could advertise cell phones during the Games. So, while Samsung plastered its ads all over town, Motorola couldn't even keep its sign on the building.

The advertising blackout was just the latest setback for Motorola in what has been a bruising two years in China, which was long a successful market for the company. For years, Motorola was No. 1 or No. 2 in the China mobile-phone market. But its share has plummeted from more than 21% in 2006 to an estimated 7.9% this year, according to market researcher Gartner (IT). In contrast, Nokia's (NOK) share has topped 38% of the market, while Samsung is likely to grab 8.3% this year to move up to No. 2.

Motorola can't afford to continue its nosedive. With 583 million cell-phone users, China is the world's largest mobile market. Chinese bought 176 million handsets last year and are likely to purchase 192 million in 2008, Gartner says. That compares with sales of 186 million phones this year in the U.S. and Canada. The drop in China is particularly painful for Motorola, because before the slide the fast-growing market had helped it narrow the gap overall with archrival Nokia. Motorola's "position in China was stronger than what it [was] globally," says Aloysius Choong, research manager in Singapore for market research firm IDC. "It was making a lot of the right moves." Motorola's sales in China totaled $2.6 billion in 2007, or 7% of its global revenues. That was down from $4.7 billion, or nearly 11%, in 2006.

What went wrong? To some extent, Motorola in China faces the same problem that plagues the company elsewhere: It failed to produce an encore to the popular Razr phone, launched in 2004. In China, coming out with new models is important because big-city consumers replace their phones frequently and put a priority on models that are cool-looking but reasonably priced. "They haven't come up with the next-generation product that replaces [the Razr]," says Mark McKechnie, telecom equipment analyst with American Technology Research. "The guys that replaced it were Nokia, Samsung, and even LG." Indeed, when rivals came out with similar models, Motorola's new entries were pricey multimedia phones that didn't connect with consumers. While the U.S. company developed a smartphone for China, the Ming, the touchscreen device did little to boost Motorola's overall market position.

The result: Chinese consumers have soured on the Motorola brand. Chen Xin, a 37-year-old Beijing resident who works for a local info-tech company, once bought five Motorola phones over a four-year span. But now he prefers Nokia and Sony Ericsson models, calling Motorola phones "ugly and not very easy to operate."

It hasn't helped that Motorola's competitors have been so good at tackling the China market. As an Olympics sponsor, Samsung associated itself with the feel-good experience that millions of Chinese enjoyed from the Games. The Korean company sells inexpensive models such as the Anycall CC03, a hit with first-time mobile users, as well as premium models. "We try to make sure Chinese early adopters are among the first to have our top-of-the-line phones," says Roh Ki Hak, senior vice-president.

For its part, Nokia remains comfortably ahead of the pack, thanks to its wide range of models. "Nokia has really covered every segment," says Dave Carini, an analyst in Beijing with Maverick China Research. Nokia also has been a leader in streamlining its Chinese distribution system, cutting out middlemen and working directly with retailers. The Finnish company's efficiency is one reason its handset operating margins run about 20%, while Motorola barely breaks even, says American Technology's McKechnie.

The news from China isn't all bleak for Motorola, however. The Schaumburg (Ill.) company has won important infrastructure contracts with Chinese carriers recently. In early August, Motorola announced it had landed $431 million in contracts to provide China Mobile (CHL), the market leader, with second-generation GSM equipment. That's up from $394 million for the same period in 2007. Motorola is also working with the other two cellular operators, China Unicom (CHU) and China Telecom, says Simon Leung, president of Motorola Asia-Pacific. "We are the only ones with the technology to address the needs of all three of them," he says. As for its handset problems, "we took our eyes off the ball a little bit," Leung admits. But Motorola is launching new phones, including an updated and expanded line of Ming smartphones, according to Bruce Brda, senior vice-president for mobile devices.

Will that be enough to turn around Motorola's fortunes in China? "I would not write them off," says Sandy Shen, research director for mobile devices with Gartner in Shanghai. But given the depth of the problems, she adds, "I wouldn't hold my breath."

source

TV manufacturers are constantly trying to out-do each other on specs. Brightness, contrast, number of inputs - it’s all fair game. We’ve already had the worlds Largest plasma but it looks like the next battleground will be the thickness of the screen.

Sony are proudly proclaiming the new 40″ Bravia XZ1 holds the title of “World’s thinnest LCD TV” measuring 9.9mm at it’s slimmest point. To put that into perspective, it’s slightly thinner than my K660i. Quite a feat!

More details after the jump

Edge mounted LED lighting, replacing the conventional backlight.

A separate receiver hooks up the inputs, sending the HD signal wirelessly to the screen. A nice touch, it means the screen can just sit on the wall with no distracting cables hanging down

Newly developed Bravia Engine 2. The Sony Bravia processing engine is one of the better ones out there, doing a good job on upscaling SD content.

Sony today proudly announced world’s lightest and thinnest LCD TV. The KDL-40ZX1 from the Bravia ZX1 series weighs 12.2kg and measures just 9.9mm thick. The TV’s anorexia figure is possible with the help of wireless media base. The transmission of the data between the base and the LCD is done on a frequency band of 5GHz. 40ZX1 is full HD ready but due to the wireless transmission, only 1080i can be viewed and 1080p quality videos need a wired HDMI input.

The media base can communicate easily within a distance of 20 metres and has 3 HDMI, USB, 2 Composite, 1 S-Video, Ethernet and VGA ports. The TV will be selling from November end for 490,000 Yen ($4500).

Sony is proudly introduced the world’s thinest LCD TV known as the Sony KDL-40ZX1. This 40-inch LCD TV measures at only 9.9mm thick and weighs 26 pounds. This super thin LCD screen defeats the previous record holder from Hitachi. The Sony KDL-40ZX1 features LED backlighting, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, 120Hz MotionFlow tech, x.v.Color, and BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing. You might be a rich person if you can purchase this thin LCD screen since it is priced at a hefty $4,474 (after conversion). The Sony KDL-40ZX1 will be released in Japan on November 10th, 2008.
Got a fondness for trigonometry? Were you a ‘mathlete’ back in high school? If so then you’ll want to proudly hang this Unit Circle Wall Clock in your office or cubicle. Depending on where you work your co-workers will either get a good chuckle, or continue to avoid walking by your office at all costs. Unfortunately the maths were never my strongest subject in school (I excelled at field trips and statutory holidays) and that coupled with my inability to tell time with an analog clock means I’ll probably be sticking with the digital variety, but you can get one of these from CafePress for just $15.99.

The Asus F6 boasts a 13.3 inch screen, an integrated webcam, an Intel Core2 Duo processor, up to 4GB of DRAM support, up to 320GB of HD space and comes in four scents – Floral Blossom, Musky Black, Morning Dew and Aqua Ocean. Asus doesn't say how long the fragrance is supposed to last, or whether you can reapply it. But for a couple of days at least, when the patrons of your local coffee shop wrinkle up their noses and ask “What's that smell?” you can proudly say “Me.” [Asus via Far East Gizmos]
