Now that it’s out and free for download from the App Store, I had a chance to download it and see whether the excitement was actually worth it. The much anticipated Google app basically is a search app for the iPhone with the extra special functionality that lets users to speak into their iPhones to submit search to Google’s search engine, which can serve up both standard search results as well as movie showtimes, addresses, and other handy information. While most users did not seem to have any problem with voice recognition, it seems clear that much work still needs to be done for searches involving multiple words for example, as the application takes ages just to recognise the wrong words!

And this is not the end of all the critique, as Jason from TechCrunch have mentioned…

My biggest issue with the app is that there is apparently no way to use the voice detection feature to call a contact, despite the fact that you can search through contacts using manual text entry. One of my biggest gripes about the iPhone is that there’s no way to make a hands-free call, and while this would still require at least one buttonpress, it would be an improvement.

I suppose we shouldn’t have that much of an expectation to take it for granted that Google’s application should provide voice recognise for our iPhone contacts. Afterall these have nothing to do with Google, it sounds more like an issue that should be built in to the iPhone and addressed by Apple altogether, instead of having the functionality imported from different applications just to fill in bits of missing gaps of a puzzle. Nevertheless, the app does seem promising and makes it quite convenient to browse the internet and your onboard contacts, so I would highly recommend you give it a try, afterall it’s free!

Click here and the link should take you directly to iTunes. Alternatively, if you’re using your iPhone now, just tap into the App Store and you should be able to find it by simply searching “Google”.

These colorful matrioshka-like nesting bowls capture my home maker fancy. At $59, they seem overpriced — surely IKEA must sell something like this at half the price— but the chromatic nesting and stacking of four measuring cups, two bowls, a colander and sieve inside each other somehow triggers in me the self-satisfaction of a preschooler solving a simple geometric block puzzle.

We're presented with an interesting conundrum this fine afternoon. Exhibit A: A new study says unhappy people watch more TV. Exhibit B: People dealing with the switch from analog to digital TV are probably the most unhappy TV watchers on the planet right now, next to anyone who's been hoodwinked by the HDTV department at Best Buy. There was even a NASCAR wreck this week because of digital TV. So, if we use the powerful forces of logic on this little puzzle, we can deduce that the digital switch is making analog TV owners unhappy, which makes them want to watch more TV, which they soon will be unable to do because the signal is about to get cut off. There have been wars started for less, so we anticipate come February 2009, the world is going to end, three years earlier that predicted. Take THAT, Mayans!

The 30-year study, published by the fine folks at the University of Maryland, also discovered that people who read and socialize well are happier on average, and watch watch less TV. This is actually in line with my own research findings, The Jack Loftus Method, which found people are generally happier when having sex with other people, and not their television screens.

And finally, from the Duh! department, comes this gem from Maryland researcher and sociologist John Robinson:

"TV doesn't really seem to satisfy people over the long haul the way that social involvement or reading a newspaper does," said Robinson, who was also the study co-author. "It's more passive and may provide escape - especially when the news is as depressing as the economy itself. The data suggest to us that the TV habit may offer short-run pleasure at the expense of long-term malaise."

Unless, of course, you're watching porn. Then we all win.
This cute little puzzle made by Bittorrent co-creator Bram Cohen features three interlocking gears that can only freely rotate in one configuration.

TriGears is a special puzzle. There are three gears set so that turning one gear turns the other two. If the three gears were in a flat plane they would, of course, jam. Oskar had the gears bevelled and set them at 60 degrees so that they all mesh in the middle. This apparently has no practical value and would not be a puzzle if Oskar had not made the teeth of the gears of varying width and of varying spacing. The object of the puzzle is to place the three gears in their holder such that they spin freely and do not jam. There is only one way to do this (see the solution). All other assemblies quickly jam. Once solved, the puzzle becomes a toy in that it is very satisfying to keep spinning the gears.

At a recent developers conference, Microsoft announced their first four Live Mesh applications to excite the public and developers alike known as the MeshPack.

According to ZDNet, the MeshPack includes:

Collaborative Crossword: A crossword puzzle designed for multiple users to solve together
CorkBoard: “Bulletin board for the digital life”
MeshLists: A list creation/sharing tool
CrowdVote: A collaborative group-polling tool

While none of these are killer apps, Microsoft is still experimenting with the capabilities of that platform while hoping to get third parties experimenting as well. And besides, who doesn't love a little intense multiplayer crossword action?
You know how it is. You’ve just finished renovating your basement into the perfect games room, complete with a pool table, mini bar and even a ‘dogs playing poker’ painting on the wall, but there’s just one tacky piece of the puzzle missing that will make the decor absolutely perfect. Well say hello to that last puzzle piece. While classic jukeboxes might have that retro, “hey look what I just wasted my money on!” look to them, if you don’t have a collection of small vinyl records, what good are they? The IntelliTunes Digital Jukebox on the other hand is not only able to play your existing digital music collection, but you can also rip audio CDs directly to its internal hard drive. And it does all that while looking vaguely reminiscent of the jukeboxes found in a 1950’s-era diner.

It has a capacity for about 50,000 songs, and features two LCD displays for controlling and monitoring what’s being played. The top 8-inch LCD shows artist and track info as well as a “mesmerizing 3D light show” visualizer, while the bottom 15-inch touch screen LCD provides the user interface and other controls. You’ll want to keep in mind that the IntelliTunes doesn’t have any built-in speakers of its own, but it does have an UltraHiFi 360 watt 2 channel amplifier that can be connected to a pair of external speakers or tied into an existing stereo setup. It’s even got wifi for streaming internet radio, and if you’re not sold by now, I’m sure the virtual aquarium screensavers is more than enough to justify the $3,995 price tag.

Onyx Online, for the iPhone, is kind of like Xbox Live. Sort of. The ambitious service is the brainchild of Trism developer Steve Demeter, who hopes to add a slew of "social media" features to iPhone games, like leaderboards, achievements, forums, and the like. There's even a pissing contest feature, wherein Onyx-enabled games will allow players to view each other's profiles, scores, challenge friends, and see what games people are playing. Like we said, just add a headset and some 15-year-old boys screaming "your gay" and you have Xbox Live (and no, there's no typo there— even when they scream it, they use the wrong spelling, just like in the forums).

The thing is, Onxy was created more out of a sense of self-preservation amongst developers than it was keeping it real for people who game on the iPhone. As the App Store becomes cluttered with hundreds upon hundreds of throwaway games, Demeter told Wired the indie developer is in danger of being muscled out by big boys like Sega, who have the marketing budget to get their titles (for better or worse) to the top of the heap.

So by making games talk to one another, or by encouraging some competition among the players, a pack mentality begins to take shape with the smaller games. A rising tide raises all boats, or the saying goes.

"Right now games don't introduce the social aspect at all on the iPhone," Demeter told Wired. "If there is a social aspect it's an island. If these users are playing Trism, they're playing Trism; it's an island. How does that tie into other puzzle games? If players are still connected to a larger whole then they're more likely to keep playing other games."

Demter then claimed Onyx will "save" the App Store. For now, we'll agree that it could save something—Demeter's busines—but we'll be watching this one nevertheless.
