One question raised by the announcement of the DSi, and specifically its removal of the GBA slot and its promises of a built-in browser: would that browser be Opera, and will the DSi contain extra RAM to allow the browser to run? The old DS version of the Opera browser required a GBA RAM cartridge, after all.

According to Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner, the answer to both questions is "yes:"

Yes, the DSi has more RAM than the DS Lite. In addition, with integrated Opera coming with the DSi, it will use RAM more efficiently.

It'll be interesting to see how this affects the DS software library as a whole. Will game developers opt to go DSi-specific in order to access that additional memory, or will it largely go unused? Another question: what will this mean for DS homebrew? Many homebrew DS games already require the Opera GBA RAM pack to run: if the DSi is hackable for homebrew, that means that the DSi might quickly become the preferred system of choice for emulators, source ports and the like.

The European Union already initiated a Battery Directive in 2006 that aimed to make it easier to dispose of and recycle old batteries, but it looks like it's now taking things one big step further with its "New Battery Directive," which proposes that batteries in all electronic devices should be able to be "readily removed" for replacement or disposal. New Electronics' Gary Nevison further adds that "the requirement is clearly intended to ensure that users can remove batteries by opening a cover by hand or after removal of one or two screws," which would obviously pose a bit of a problem for the iPhone, not to mention every iPod and even a few non-Apple devices. Then again, this wouldn't be the first time that Apple has tangled with the EU, and we have a sneaking suspicion that it won't be the last.

Consumer goods manufacturers and retailers continue to adopt RFID largely for the sake of compliance with mandates from the likes of Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and METRO in Germany. However according to a survey recently conducted by ABI Research, topline results of which are available in a free white paper on the firm’s website, other benefits that RFID can deliver are growing in importance and will eventually overtake compliance as the leading market driver for RFID uptake in this vertical.

According to research director Michael Liard, “While compliance remains the primary motivator for RFID uptake in the consumer goods sector (in contrast to the overall RFID market) respondents to this ABI Research survey cited three other considerations that increasingly influence their decisions to trial and deploy the technology. They are: ease of scalability, business process improvement, and removal of human intervention.”

The breadth of possible retail RFID applications is growing, too. For example, consumer goods manufacturers and retailers also agree that RFID technology can contribute to more effective promotions by helping to determine when promotional products arrive, and if and when they were placed on the store floor. Another exciting area is item-level tagging of apparel, books, and more.

Liard adds, “Declining passive UHF tag and readers price points have positively influenced market adoption, but further reductions are necessary if RFID is to explode in supply chains. Favorable prices will become even more critical as consumer goods manufacturers focus on ROI and total cost of ownership, and when RFID ‘goes wider and larger’ within enterprises.”

We were eyeing the announcement of an updated DS by the end of the year. But Nintendo dropped the bomb early by revealing the camera equipped DSi today in Japan. The new DSi has two 0.3 megapixel cameras – one on the back and the other one on the hinge. It also sports a 3.25-inch screen which is 17 percent larger than DS Lite’s LCD. Nintendo has managed to make this thing a bit thinner which is a result of the removal of GBA slot in lieu of a SD card slot. Though Nintendo’s decision to remove the GBA slot can be shocking for some but they will be bringing back some GBA titles in their new newly announced DSi Shop which works just like the Wii Ware Shop.

DSi will launch in Japan on November 1 and will sell for 18,900 Yen ($180).

iPhone developers reacted with delight when Apple on Wednesday lifted its non-disclosure agreement that prohibited discussion of programming for the iPhone 2.0 operating system.

In
a letter to iPhone application developers announcing the NDA removal, Apple admitted its policy was a
hindrance to iPhone's success, since it prohibited developers from
discussing programming tips with one another, among other reasons.

"We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS
includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to
protect," Apple wrote in a letter
published on its developer site. "However, the NDA has created too much of a
burden
on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the
iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software."

The move shortly follows recent actions that have brought Apple under widespread scrutiny in its developer community. About one week ago, Apple extended its NDA
to include rejection letters, meaning rejected developers could not disclose any
information about why Apple turned down their iPhone applications. The NDA also led a publisher to canceling a book about developing for iPhone.

Steve Demeter, developer of the vastly popular iPhone game Trism, was overjoyed when he heard the news.

"I'm really enthusiastic to
see that [Apple is] further opening up their community to help developers
be that much more forward with each other," Demeter said. "I think the
social aspect of the iPhone is unique and will enable to people to
share their ideas."

Nullriver CEO Adam Dann, who developed an iPhone application called Netshare, which Apple banned from the App Store, shared Demeter's enthusiasm. He said the NDA lift would have a positive impact on iPhone applications, since developers can now publish articles and books on coding for the App Store.

"It's definitely going to kick iPhone development up quite a bit," Dann said. "It should improve the iPhone development community ... and the entire App Store overall."

For more on the NDA lift, read Web Monkey's story "Apple Hears Developers, Nixes iPhone NDA."

Another week, another LG product launch. That’s what it feels like at the moment anyway. Last week it was the turn of the Korean giant’s mobile phone division with the UK debut of the KC910 "Renoir".

The successor to the popular Viewty, the Renoir is a slim device with a nearly full face touch screen. LG are pushing the device’s multimedia credentials, highlights being certified DivX playback, Dolby enhanced sound and an 8 megapixel camera with lots of trick modes.

It’s launching in the UK imminently on all the major networks and LG are bundling an 8GB memory card in the box to take advantage of all that multimedia goodness.

First impressions are good - I had the chance to examine one fairly closely at the launch and it’s a light, responsive device (with a blinding flash for the camera!). The standard software bundle includes the usual web browser, email client, calendar and an assortment of games. The OS is a completely custom affair (not based on Windows mobile or Symbian) so it takes a little getting used to. Once you get your head around it though it’s easy enough to use.

Hopefully I should be getting my paws on one in the not too distant future, so expect a more complete write up soon. In the meantime, check out Tracy and Matt’s coverage of the launch and take in the full specs after the jump.
