Sure, the iPhone and iPhone 3G - let’s just make it easy and say “iPhone OS” - already provides users an integrated Google Maps application that provides all the driving directions, business information, and location data (thanks to cell-tower triangulation and GPS positioning) you could want. But, what kind of a free market would this be if competing mapping services didn’t offer their own take on mobile mapping?

For the sake of keeping things interesting, Mapquest has announced a new iPhone-optimized version of their website. iPhone and iPhone 3G users need do nothing more than point their Safari browser to mapquest.com. Mapquest detects the iPhone Safari web browser and serves up an iPhone-optimized version of the website.

And, Mapquest for iPhone is just as full-featured as its desktop sibling. iPhone users will be able to flick, swipe, and pinch their way through Mapquest’s Maps, Driving Directions, Local Search, Traffic, Recent Locations, and Cheapest Gas Prices.

Adding the Mapquest website to your iPhone homescreen turns the new service into a veritable web-app alternative to Google Maps.

Nameo is a new iPhone app designed to help iPhone owners exchange virtual business cards. It won’t use SMS to send your contact information. Rather, once you click the big “Connect” button, the application looks for users with iPhones near you who can receive a vCard — they also need to have Nameo installed on their iPhones.

On the downside, though, Nameo only allows users to exchange select contact details — including name, email address and phone number. However, the developer behind the app (Meganova BV) wowed to add more options including contact photos in a future release.

Schmap optimizes website contact info for iPhone users

The iPhone. It’s everywhere. Be it the iPhone or iPhone 3G, webmasters and administrators will probably have already noticed that iPhone traffic to their websites has increased in the past months. Schmap, the iPhone-optimized maps mashup, has announced a new iPhone-optimization service for websites looking to offer iPhone a convenient way to contact or find them on Google Maps.

Schmap can embed code within your website that, when parsed through an iPhone Safari browser, will include an easily visible link to iPhone-formatted contact information. The contact information is shown in a new tab within Safari and offers Google Maps location integration, email address (integrated into Mail.app), and even a “call” link that automatically calls the phone number.

Whether you have a restaurant, dog grooming business, or car wash, Schmap’s iPhone optimization service is a no-brainer. The code is transparent to all other, non-iPhone Safari, browsers, so it won’t interfere with other users’ browsing.

Schmap plans to launch a public beta of the new service this Friday. IntoMobile readers can get in on the beta-goodness before Friday. With the original iPhone and next-generation iPhone 3G set to take on a decidedly more enterprise-savvy role with the upcoming iPhone 2.0 OS firmware, businesses can finally integrate the iPhone with their Exchange-based corporate communications systems.

A survey, conducted by Goldman Sachs, of 100 executives revealed that 17% of businesses will be bringing the iPhone on-board as an enterprise device within the next year. That level of iPhone-support is "a very strong number especially at this early stage," says Goldman telecom analyst Jason Armstrong. And, once the iPhone's enterprise prowess proves itself over the next several months, we'll likely see more and more businesses lining up to support the iPhone.

It would be prudent to understand that the same survey indicates that 83% of businesses aren't looking toward the iPhone as an enterprise platform. But, that doesn't take away from the fact that the iPhone's consumer-roots are starting to find their way in to the enterprise-garden.

Schmap for the iPhone and iPod Touch

When we first learned about Schmap digital travel guides a couple years back, we loved the concept but were frustrated by the lack of options for Macs. With their new beta version for iPhones and iPod Touches, they've one-upped themselves by providing their interactive maps in a format designed to take advantage of the device's unique capabilities.

Using the gyro feature and either a city guide or local search, when the phone or iPod is horizontal it displays (much like Google Maps) a split-screen with mapped locations on one side and a dynamically-updated list on the other. It also embeds info, just like Google Maps, enabling users to click through to websites and phone numbers or to look up the address using the local widget (to find directions, for example).

While it's a little confusing to have to scroll lists using two fingers, the resource is a great way to find a coffee shop in a strange city or discover any number of useful or fun places.
