Microsoft recently took some heat for their decision to make their revamped Internet Explorer Mobile 6 available only on new Windows Mobile handsets. With the promise of full-HTML web browsing and integrated Flash support, Internet Explorer Mobile 6 uses the desktop IE code-base to deliver a browsing experience more like that offered by Skyfire and Opera.

Today, we’re hearing confirmation that the new Pocket Internet Explorer 6 will first be available in China - on the Samsung Omnia. Scott Rockfeld, Microsoft’s director of Windows Mobile, mobile communications business, stated that Microsoft “want to have users in [emerging markets] get their first online experience with Windows Mobile. Our target is not to convert existing users of the competing phones like the iPhone or Google’s Android. We want to grow faster than the market.”

So, there you have it. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Mobile 6 will bring the full-HTML rendering power of Internet Explorer 6 to Windows Mobile devices in China first.

A bad move for Microsoft?

The result, pictured here, adds over half a pound to the machine's weight and an uncomfortable incline to typing on the system. But it should offer 8-10 hours of battery life, too.
Historic Selection of Military Family Housing Overseas Capital Venture

WASHINGTON, -- After a highly competitive bidding process, the Department of the Army has selected Humphreys Family Communities LLC (HFC) to enter into exclusive negotiations with the Army to design, finance, build and operate the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Housing Opportunity Project in the Republic of Korea.

The community development project is a 50-year public-private venture that will provide approximately 2,400 family homes for military families assigned to USAG Humphreys, located in Pyeongtaek, ROK, a rural area about 55 miles south of Seoul. HFC is a joint venture between Pinnacle AMS Development Company LLC, of Irvine, Calif.; Samsung C&T Corporation, of Seoul; and Hunt Companies, of El Paso, Texas.

This project marks the first time in the history of military housing that private sector developers, builders, managers, and capital providers will have the opportunity to create a first-class residential community on an Army post in a foreign land. Under the proposed plan, HFC will develop, design, finance, build and operate approximately 2,400 homes on two parcels, as well as own and manage the homes for 50 years. The homes will be within a planned community environment that will include a mixture of low-, mid- and high-rise residential buildings, parks, athletic fields, community facilities, retail outlets, and subterranean parking to optimize open space.

The availability of this housing will enable the Army to meet its commitments with the Republic of Korea to relocate U.S. forces from USAG Yongsan, Seoul and several other installations north of Seoul to USAG Humphreys. Military families will begin their move to USAG Humphreys in 2012. HFC's construction schedule will accommodate arriving military families who can rent an apartment or townhouse unit for their Overseas Housing Allowance.

Assistant Secretary of the Army Keith Eastin said, "I am very happy with the financial competitiveness, innovative design and exceptional quality of HFC's proposal. The Army is on a tight relocation schedule and traditional military construction of this housing was not a viable option. We needed a solution that could get this housing built, meet our relocation obligation and provide Soldiers and their families a high quality standard of living. I was very pleased with the private sector's enthusiastic response and the quality of the proposals we received. HFC's proposal is first rate and I can't wait to see this residential community built."

"Our team is incredibly honored and excited to have the opportunity to work with the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense to create a new global standard for military family housing for our armed forces," said M. Scott Orrantia, Managing Director, Pinnacle Development. "At USAG Humphreys, we want to create a comfortable home away from home for our soldiers and their families that will make their tour in Korea a truly memorable and enjoyable experience."

Financing for the $1.3 billion project is being underwritten and managed by Merrill Lynch, Bank of America, and Sumitomo Mitsui Bank, a financial team that Orrantia called a "winning triumvirate of financial institutions necessary to ensure success in today's uncertain and volatile capital markets."

World-renowned architecture and planning firms, S.A.M.O.O. and Heerim, both of Seoul, and the award-winning MVE & Partners of Irvine, Calif. will provide the design and site planning for the project. Samsung will be the design-builder, and Harper-Hanmi Parsons will be the construction manager. Harper-HanmiParsons is a project alliance formed between Harper Construction Company, Inc., San Diego, Calif., and HanmiParsons Co., Ltd., Seoul. Pinnacle, an American Management Services Company, of Seattle, Wash., will provide facilities management, maintenance and resident services.

About Pinnacle
For more information, visithttp://www.pinnacle-development.net and
http://www.pinnacleAMS.com.

About Samsung
For more information, visithttp://www.samsungcorp.com.

About Hunt
For more information, visithttp://www.huntcompanies.com.

The National Ignition Facility out at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California is the size of a football stadium and equipped with the largest laser in the world. With said massive laser nearing completion — it'll be done by 2009 — and the facility scheduled to begin testing in 2010, the folks running the show have set an ambitious timetable of realizing fusion power by 2011.

It sounds too good to be true, and maybe it is, but it centers around a concept called Laser Inertial Confinement Fusion-Fission Energy (or LIFE), which produces carbon-free electricity using a laser like the one installed at the NIF. According to an LLNL release, LIFE could "generate gigawatts of power 24 hours a day for as long as 50 years without refueling while avoiding carbon dioxide emissions."

Only time will tell if we're finally able to take advantage of fusion, but I'm looking forward to slapping my forehead and shouting "Great Scott!" when it does.

U.S. customs agents have found $700,000 worth of fake Nikes in a shipment from China that allegedly pretended to carry $20,674 in kitchen cabinets.

There's no word on whether the Nikes involved in the sting operation were the Hyperdunk shoes that the company tried to pass off as the real Mcflys from Back to the Future II, earlier this summer. The shoes are the company's most trendy this year, and we wouldn't be surprised if a criminal tried to make money off their popularity.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, 568 cartons of bogus Nikes were stuffed behind 30 cartons of industrial toilet paper. This is only the latest incident in the battle against trafficking of valuable gadgets and other merchandise in California ports.

Earlier this year, thousands of expensive counterfeit watches were seized in a Los Angeles port, and in May, $22 million worth of fake designer bags were also found in Oakland's Port.

The Port of Oakland is one of the West Coast's largest terminals for container ships, and is one of the busiest ports in the country. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office, about 20,000 to 30,000 containers come into the port each month.

According to the Chronicle's report, the alleged counterfeit importer described the contents of the container as only kitchen cabinets, before arriving to the port. There is no word on whether the man has been indicted for the counterfeit or whether he was wearing fake McFlys at the time of his arrest.

Today, TMC announced the launch of NGN Magazine focused on next generation networks and how service providers and carriers can build these networks and what they will need to know to maximize savings and ARPU (average revenue per user).

"We're in an interesting time," says TMC President and Group Publisher, Rich Tehrani. No, he's not referring to the American political scene or the chaotic American economy. Rich is referring to Next Generation Networks, which Rich believes will be critical to the future of service providers and carriers. Certainly, in these tough economic times, squeezing the most efficiency and most value-add services is critical. Verizon is probably the best example of that. They've been investing billions in their fiber-based FiOS service which supports high-speed Internet, voice, and TV/video/HDTV. They are no doubt also looking to tie in their considerable wireless/cellular network with their FiOS network to offer customers a competitive advantage over competing solutions.

In his video interview with TMCnet Group Managing Editor Erik Linask, Rich discusses NGN Magazine. [click to visit video link]

The topics TMC's NGN magazine will address, some of which Rich mentions in the video interview:

» How do you deploy new services and applications ?
» What technology should you consider ?
» How do you integrate new technologies with legacy elements?

Erik points out that a lot of publishing companies have been cutting down on staff and even folding print publications. Rich addresses this point by pointing out that 2-3 million executives visit tmcnet.com to read the content digitally. He also discusses how TMC offers digital (PDF) versions of the print magazines which greatly reduces costs. Thousands of people subscribe to the digital PDF format.

While all facets of the economy seem to be slowing down, TMC continues to grow -- not only launching a new magazine, but recently adding new telecom/wireless industry talent such as Carl Ford, Scott Kargman, and more. Newspapers may die, print magazines may fold, but good information and news will always be needed. And where there is a need for good information, people will pay for it. Publishing companies which are nimble enough to adjust to the trend towards online news dissemination will survive, while those that can't will die.

Case in point is the NY Times, which must deliver $400 million to lenders in May of 2009 or face bankruptcy. But if you're a New York Times fan, don't worry. I'm sure President-elect Barrack Obama will add them to the $700+ billion bailout. Can't have the NY Times go bankrupt, can we? Don't answer that question...

The OSx86 hacking scene, which involves installing the Mac OS onto generic PCs instead of those shiny Apple boxes, is characterized by the troubles of marrying hardware to software. In short, OS X just doesn't have drivers for many of the internal parts such as Wi-Fi cards and, almost as important, sound hardware.

In fact, getting sound in and out of a netbook Hackintosh has proved to be a big challenge. At least with Wi-Fi you can always just swap out the card for an Airport-compatible one. Enterprising hackers also helped us to get the headphone jack working on our Gadget Lab Wind, and now the folks at ipis OS X have done the same for the Eee PC.

Like the Wind solution, you need to install Apple's developer tools and a new audio driver to get things working. Unlike the rather clunky Wind solution – which requires typing a command into the terminal every time you want to switch from headphones to the internal speakers – the Eee hack is packaged as a menu extra.

The picture above shows Audieee, a small application (227KB) which sits up in the menubar and lets you toggle the output. That's about as simple as things can get until someone figures out how to have the output switch automatically when you plug in some headphones. Now, please, someone make this work on the Wind!

It looks quite Enterprisey—a sort of mashup between the old sensibilities of TOS, the more advanced special effects of the USS Enterprise E (Picard's latest ship) and Scott Bakula's lousy junker. Looking at it again, those fat nacelles make it seem more like a cross between the Enterprise A and the Enterprise B. In any case, a high five to JJ Abrams and his effects crew for making a ship we're looking forward to seeing go "pew pew pew" next year.
