AT&T has added a new simple 3G phone from Samsung. Aside from boasting a 3G radio, the Samsung SGH-A637 hardly impresses anyone. To be fair, there’s a 1.3 megapixel camera, 1.9-inch screen, Bluetooth, integrated GPS and microSD card slot on board. Supported services include MobiTV, Cellular Video, XM radio, AT&T Mobile Music and AT&T Navigator. And that’s about it. The device seems ideal for seniors or those who want to fall in love in modern 3G services. In the latter sense, Samsung’s candybar seems like an ideal starting point…

NYC is full of ATMs. It's one of the great things about living in this city—you're never more than a block or two away from cash. But a large, large percentage of NYC's ATMs are cut-rate bodega models that look like your card could catch something nasty from them once dipped. Helping spread the nasty is this, the newest development in ATM skimmers, with SMS capability. So now, if he's got $8,500 to drop on the top of the line scam gear, the asshole who just jacked your card number and PIN doesn't even have to come back to the scene of the crime to retrieve it.

The folks at Zero Day uncovered a bunch of promotional material for the SMS-capable skimmer, which can send up to 1,856 coded numbers via a standard GSM SIM card for 24 hours on a single charge. The skimmer replaces an ATM's normal card reader, and is even painted with the exact same pigments and techniques used by the real manufacturer. When I logged on to my bank account online last year to find it had just been emptied by a series of huge withdrawals in Jordan ("Have you been to Jordan recently?" asked the bank fraud department innocently), maybe this was the enabler. [ZD Net]

Customers at Orange staff are apparently claiming that retail staff have said the Omnia has been discontinued - which both Samsung and Orange are denying.

The whole thing apparently kicked off with forum threads on a Money saving site in the UK - suggestions of the device being discontinued due to software issues and multiple returns have been floated, but appear unsubstantiated.

So let’s open the floor to IntoMobile readers generally, who have Omnias? What’s your feeling about how the device is working? Is all well with the touchscreen wonder?

Separately, Samsung also emailed me about the fact that Omnia does pretty much everything - if you want to take a look at their website, which does have a stack of info on, click here.

But from these first official shots of the unofficial sequel to the praised MSI Wind, we see that not much has changed about the exterior beyond adding a new two-tone style with a black border around the screen (probably to help colors pop). Then again, popping in a SIM card to surf the web from anywhere is a pretty solid update in itself. Look for the Wind U120 priced under $600 this December.
It seems AT&T has wised up to customers looking for a cheaper alternative to the post-paid unlimited 3G data plans. AT&T has been offering pre-paid customers unlimited 3G data packages with their GoPhone pre-paid plans for some time now. And, with the GoPhone unlimited 3G data packages costing just $20, compared to the $30 that iPhone 3G customers pay for unlimited post-paid 3G data access, AT&T has likely seen a lot of potentially lucrative post-paid data revenue being siphoned off by the company’s pre-paid business.

As such, AT&T is reportedly planning to pull the plug on their pre-paid unlimited 3G GoPhone plans on November 12. AT&T says that the move is simply the end of a trial and that the company is looking into alternative offerings. If AT&T brings back unlimited 3G data access to GoPhone users, it’s a fairly safe bet that AT&T will be hiking their prices so as not to undercut their post-paid unlimited 3G data offerings.

Recent developments in the field of mobile computing have made connecting to communications technologies on the move almost expected, marking a significant change from only a few years ago when connecting to the internet or transferring files wasn`t possible without a wire. Now, you can get just as good a transfer rate on the move on your mobile as you can from your desk top computer in the office, meaning that a number of business opportunities are now more achievable than they have ever been before.

Mobile telephony devices now also offer an efficient “on-the-move” service, for example, through GSM, GPRS and 3G.

Global System for Mobile-communication (GSM) allows a user to insert their SIM card into any mobile device with a compatible GSM frequency and make and receive phone calls to any other phone from that device. This is useful if travelling internationally on a frequent basis as you can be sure that your call will go through no matter which provider you are using and you only need the one device and SIM card.

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) marks an improvement from GSM. It means that wireless packets of data, such as e-mails and web content, can travel across a wireless telephone network. Users can expect a rate similar to that of a 56K dial-up Internet connection meaning that it is possible to transfer files, as well as access and control in-house appliances and machines on the move.

3G, standing for “third generation”, also offers mobile communications services. It provides users with an “always-on” service with a real-time video calling function; high speed downloads, broadband speed web browser and location-based services such as locating your nearest bank or train station.

But these services are obviously redundant unless you have a device to access them on. “Smart phones” such as Blackberries and PDAs (Personal digital assistants) offer almost a “mobile office” service, supplying functions to send and receive e-mail, browse the web, simplified office programs as well as calendars, and conventional mobile phone services. This, in theory, means that the “office” as we knew it, is changing. As you`re able to check your e-mails on the train or on the way to a meeting, mobile communication is managing to simplify our lives in lots of different ways.

Mobile computing therefore has many benefits for all sorts of businesses. You are able to transfer files to clients immediately without having to return to the office, as you can carry them on your mobile device, or you could connect to your diary to organise a follow up meeting on the go. This leads to greater flexibility in the way that you work, and therefore improves the service that you are able to provide.
