Acquisition to Strengthen Wind River’s Mobile Linux Capabilities, Accelerate Mobile Services in Asia Pacific

ALAMEDA, CA – Wind River (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire MIZI Research, Inc., a privately-held company based in Seoul, Korea that focuses on the development of mobile application platforms based on embedded Linux. Founded in 1999, MIZI currently has 65 employees and is one of the earliest Linux pioneers in the mobile market. With this acquisition, Wind River expects to gain access to world-class mobile expertise that can be leveraged across its various mobile alliances as well as accelerate its mobile services presence in Asia Pacific.

Under the terms of the agreement, Wind River will pay up to USD $16 million in cash to acquire substantially all of the outstanding shares of MIZI. The completion of the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to occur in Wind River’s third fiscal quarter ending October 31, 2008. Wind River expects that the acquisition will not have a material impact on GAAP and non-GAAP earnings per share in FY09. It is anticipated to be accretive to GAAP and non-GAAP earnings per share in FY10.

A number of fast-growing consumer electronic market segments are turning towards Linux and developing common requirements based on mobility, wireless connectivity, location-based services, feature-rich user interfaces and the promise of a rapidly expanding ecosystem of mobile and connected applications derived from the desktop. Wind River is targeting a number of vertical markets as Linux growth opportunities, including automotive infotainment, mobile handsets and mobile internet devices. Each of these segments require Wind River to rapidly expand its mobile Linux services delivery capability as well as deepen the value of its product offering tailored to these markets, which is the competency that MIZI has been developing for nearly a decade. Wind River’s mobile Linux strategy is focused on open standards and consortia, and it is expected that MIZI’s mobile expertise will be redeployed on these projects and provide a basis for differentiation.

“Wind River is targeting the mobile device market as a strategic growth opportunity within our Linux business. With the addition of the MIZI team to Wind River, we will benefit from their mobile expertise in areas such as telephony, feature-rich user interfaces and multimedia, as well as their world-class mobile systems integrator expertise, complementing our current efforts across a variety of mobile alliances,” said Ken Klein, chief executive officer, Wind River. “This acquisition will provide us with access to a talented pool of experts in mobile Linux and enable us to accelerate our mobile services presence in Asia Pacific.”

About MIZI Research, Inc.
MIZI Research, Inc. is an independent software company that specializes in the development of embedded Linux-based mobile application platforms. No matter how hard you try to minimize your power consumption, it seems to make no difference or if there is, it’s very minimal. Watching over all the appliances you use in your home is really not a walk in the park. Let’s take the use of computer as an example. Computers and its many peripherals like speakers, printers, scanner and fax machine consume electricity even if you are not using them as long as they are on. To solve the problem, inventor Jeong-Seo Lee designed the CheckTap.

The CheckTap is a power strip that can help you lower your power consumption by displaying a virtual tree that grows based on the amount of carbon dioxide you don’t emit into the environment. I can help you save up to 50% on your electric bill. Just install it in your computer and after that, it will automatically cut off or shut down the inactive equipment connected to your PC. So even if you forget to turn off a certain device, no worries because the CheckTap will do it for you. The software of the CheckTap is able to do that by detecting the energy you’re acting on the PC or one of its peripherals.

Yup, neither do I. Problem is that many of those numbers I need are only stored in my cell phone. I’ve got a Palm and even now, I fail to sync it to the Palm desktop software on a regular basis. What would be easier is if I could just hit a button on my phone and get it backed up immediately. Enter zyb.com.

ZYB is an online service (go Web!) that works with most major mobile handsets and without any additional software in most cases. Naturally, ZYB promises that your contacts will be stored securely.

So that’s great, but is that it? Nope. ZYB thought about that and realized that in this day of Facebook, MySpace and a thousand other social websites, that they shouldn’t forget that component. You can share your contacts, or a subset of them with your friends and family. ZYB also sports a little Twitter-like feature called ‘Shouts’ where you can post a small message to your account that gets sent to your friends as text messages.

The NEC VT800 is one of the newest projectors to join the VT series for NEC. It features 2700 ANSI lumens and a native XGA (1024 x 768) resolution. The reviewers at Trusted Reviews recently got the opportunity to test the VT800 and see what it is worth. They noticed several good points off the starting block. The setup was easy and quick and the design of the machine was very self explanatory. They tested out the VT800’s WiFi capabilities. They turned on the projector and installed the software and received connectivity shortly after installment. They did observe a noticeable lag time while testing the projector with slides, but it was not so bad that it compromise the projector’s overall quality. One thing the reviewer did not like was the lack of pixel resolution. Modern laptops usually have more than an XGA resolution, which could cause problems when connected to the VT800. The best feature that the writers liked was the HDMI connectivity that the VT800 had. The HD input allows for full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution video and audio to be displayed through the VT800. The final verdict for the VT800 was, “Despite its XGA resolution, the VT-800 combines a strong performance as a business projector with excellent networking features, strong connectivity and surprisingly good HD and SD video playback. Even given strong competition from the WXGA InFocus IN35W, it’s still well worth considering.”

ChangeWave's August survey of almost 2,000 people "involved with I.T. spending in their organization" says that 17% of respondents plan to buy iPhones in the next quarter, up from 13% in May and 11% in February.

What's changed since then? Apple has rolled out its new iPhone 3G, which is cheaper, and -- when it works -- offers faster Internet access. And Apple (AAPL) has released its iPhone 2.0 software update, which includes several enterprise-focused features like access to Microsoft (MSFT) Exchange email and calendars. Says ChangeWave's Paul Carton:

In yet another positive for Apple, 19% report the release of the 3G iPhone has made their company More Likely to purchase Apple products in the future - only 1% say Less Likely. Thus, the 3G iPhone release appears to be having a positive 'halo effect' in terms of improved overall corporate purchasing intentions for Apple products in general.

Meanwhile, Research In Motion (RIMM) continues to dominate enterprise buyers' plans: Some 79% say they plan to buy RIM BlackBerries in the next three months. But that's a slight decline from May, when 82% of respondents said they'd be buying BlackBerries.

Take this at face value: Just one survey from one source. We don't know how big these companies are; how many iPhones they're actually buying, if any; whether they'd be canceling their RIM deals; etc. But it's certainly the kind of news Apple is hoping to hear.

source

Do you have old laptops with PCMCIA PC slots but you have couple ExpressCard adaptors running around your house?

Then you need ExpressAdapt, a PCMCIA to ExpressCard converter, which will let you use new ExpressCard devices on your PCMCIA slot without any software/hardware modifications to your laptop.

ExpressAdapt overcomes power considerations of earlier 32-bit PC CardBus adapters providing 1000mA at 3.3V and 650mA at 1.5V. With the ability to supply power on both ExpressCard rails, newer cards like the Option Wireless GT Max 3.6 Express are fully supported. Crafted with the highest quality connectors and frame materials, ExpressAdapt meets or exceeds the requirements of every standards body it falls under.

Winners get $275,000 each.

There’s a shopping comparison app, several location-based apps, plus one to edit photos, another to share music and another that offers a challenging workout. Check out the finalists at Google’s Android Developer Gallery.

This continues to add to the ongoing excitement of the up-and-coming Google phone, which is rumored to launch this fall first from T-Mobile. Yesterday, as mentioned in my post, “Psst: T-Mobile’s 3G half the price of AT&T’s iPhone plan,” Google announced Android would get its own store, just like the Apple Apps store.

Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), the Hong Kong-listed handset subsidiary of Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), has reported that its after-tax profits declined 56% on year to US$142 million in the first half of 2008.

The earnings were lower than market expectations despite a guidance for low earnings issued by the company earlier, pointed out sources from Taiwan's handset industry.

The first-half earnings translate into a net EPS (earnings per share) of US$0.0202, much lower than the US$0.0462 recorded in the same period of 2007, according to company data.

FIH also reported that its gross margin dropped to 6.6% in the first half of the year, down from 9.5% of a year earlier, caused mainly by raw material cost inflation, tightening environmental regulations, and rising labor costs in China.

Despite declining orders from Motorola, FIH revenues grew 4.34% on year to US$4.79 billion in the first half, the company said.

Market sources in Taiwan indicated that orders from Nokia now account for about 50% of FIH's total revenues, followed by those from Motorola with an over 20% share, Sony Ericsson with a 20% share, and Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics each still marginal.

Despite market difficulties, FIH said that it has continued to aggressively expand its design centers in Taipei, Beijing, Nanjing and Seul, aiming to significantly increase engineering resources in software, testing and smartphone design to support its customers.

source
