If there's anywhere exactly wrong for displaying a speaker's prowess, it's in the middle of a tradeshow booth. The subtle musical stylings of Sony's ultra-high-concept Sountina speaker were a bit lost to us as our ears warred against the IFA drone, but what we could hear sounded just fine to us -- and there's no arguing with the looks. We kept expecting Tesla to jump out from behind a curtain and start spouting off about some free energy properties of the organic glass tweeter, but sadly walked away Tesla-free. If we were to make a value call about the sound, we'd say the mids were a bit of a no-show, while the smooth variances of the high-end were alright, but not life changing. But we won't.

Sony has showcased their super expensive Sony Sontina speaker at the IFA 2008. It is a 6 foot tall speaker that produces a 360 degree pool of sound by vibrating every corner of the organic cylinder. The speaker delivers a high quality sound with a room enhancing illumination. The Sountina Glass Speakers will be released in the future for ¥1,000,000 (about €6,500 / $10,000). As expected, AT&T will be making BlackBerry Bold-dreams come true for business-suited BlackBerry fans itching to get their hands on Waterloo’s latest and greatest push-emailing smartphone. The “source” is apparently planted high up in AT&T’s command chain, and says that the No. 1 US wireless carrier is aiming for to get the BlackBerry Bold in stores by October 2.

The near-term launch could signal AT&T’s intent to have their 3G network shored up in time to accomodate the influx of BlackBerry Bold customers that will undoubtedly add more strain on a network that is speculated to be buckling under the pressure of iPhone 3G data requests.

We’ll keep an eye on this one, stay tuned.

Last we heard, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 was slated to go live during the second half of 2008 (with some rumors pointing to a UK launch in October-November) - a vague enough launch window to ensure that Sony Ericsson could cover its behind should they run in to development problems.

Today, it looks like Sony Ericsson was right to keep us all guessing as to exactly when the XPERIA X1 would usher in a new age of high-end smartphones. We Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1have confirmation through Engadget that Sony Ericsson will be delaying the release of the XPERIA X1 until December 2008 or January 2009. The problem, apparently, is that Windows Mobile 6.1 is causing all sorts of problems for Sony Ericsson - which makes sense given the company’s newness to the world of Windows Mobile.

HTC will be offering their HTC Touch Pro as the HTC Fuze on AT&T, which leaves us wondering just how much of an impact the XPERIA X1 will have when it finally gets to market. The mobile space has an incredibly short attention span, and the buzz around the XPERIA X1 has all but died down at this point. Will SE have the marketing leverage to give consumers a reason to wait for their branded device when HTC will be launching essentially the same device well ahead of time (HTC Dream G1)?
