This week brought some new ways to watch media across the board. For television junkies, a breakthrough has holographic TVs seemingly closer than ever before, and YouTube addicts can now watch their favorite videos in simulated HD. If you've got your eyes on the stars, NASA is looking to put a giant liquid telescope on the moon, or if you enjoy giant things on earth, instead, check out this 33-story-high billboard in Dubai.

Shipping was quick! Here's a short review from the one I purchased... some of the previous ones sound like they were/are faulty......

SOUND:
The instructions are fine... IMHO the player is great! Sound quality is really good. To those who previously wrote on this... Of course, the built in speaker is crap, it's a "mini" player... what are you expecting it to sound like, duh? The head phones are ok, better then the ones that come with the iPod (IMHO). However, I'd still buy head headphones you prefer for comfort.

Touch screen:
It doesn't respond perfectly every touch. Sometimes it takes a touch or two extra to respond. On occasion, the response time is a little slow. I haven't had to press hard, not once.

Build quality is fine. I accidentally dropped it about 3' and it didn't hurt it at all. It's *very* light, made with thick plastic & metal.
I've been listening now for a few hours and battery is about 3/4 with just about all my MP3's at 320kbps.

I haven't tried the radio.... why would I want to? LOL I didn't buy it for video's either but it works fine... I tried the demo movie. Pictures look great.

Over all it's a great touch screen 8 GB MP3/MP4 player for under $[...]!!! Lets see, do I want to spend $[...] or $[...] for an touch screen iPod or $[...] for same function & sound?

What quality? (2008-09-30)
There is zero quality in the construction of this player. The screen wobbles if you press in the upper right on bottom left corners. The chrome rim around the unit is not fully glued in place and lifts in one corner. The response to the touch screen is very slow (processor us under powered).
The product does what it is suppose to do, so it gets two stars.
If I were to do it again, I would save up and get a non-touch ipod model.

Cheap Chinese attempt at IPOD touch (2008-07-30)
If you're looking for a cheap mp3 player, then this will serve your purpose. If you're looking for a Ipod touch knockoff, then forget it.

Pros-inexpensive, touch interface, music sounds good through headphones, read audiobooks (if stored as a .TXT file), bookmark capability, camera, voice recorder. Expandable memory thru sd cards. Has one built in tetris-like game. Picture viewer is satisfactory, (though you will need to upload good pictures). FM radio (needs headphones attached as antenna). Good battery life.

Cons-touch screen is difficult at times to accept requests. The built-in speaker is HORRIBLE, but most don't use that speaker anyway. I tried for a week and was never able to convert a video in the format it wants in order to play on this thing (and no instructions were included-only a CD with drivers and converters). I have yet to figure out how to add any more games to it. Camera is very low quality.

Overall-it's ok for a cheap MP3 player, FM radio and photo viewer, but if you want anything more you should spend the difference and get a name brand with the features you're interested in. Otherwise you will be disappointed.

tags : gadget

When people hear the words “overhead projector”, your first thought is the little glowing box, that your teachers used in grade school, which had the mirror and lens mounted above it. In the US presidential debate that took place earlier this week, Republican candidate, John McCain, tried to attack Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, by saying, “[Obama] voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel earmark projects, including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.” The Adler Planetarium was the facility that requested the funds. But it was to replace their obsolete 40 year old Carl Zeiss Mark VI star projector with a new Zeiss Universarium Model IX projector, not an overhead projector. The new unit cost $3.5 million and is the top of the line when it comes to planetarium projectors. The model uses fiber optic technology to display millions of stars in color and motion. The Universarium projector is also able to display a variety of other projections including, planets, constellation figures, galactic coordinates, comets, shooting stars, celestial poles, and many others. The Adler Planetarium released this press release shortly after the debate: “To clarify, the Adler Planetarium requested federal support - which was not funded - to replace the projector in its historic Sky Theater, the first planetarium theater in the Western Hemisphere. The Adler’s Zeiss Mark VI projector - not an overhead projector - is the instrument that re-creates the night sky in a dome theater, the quintessential planetarium experience. The Adler’s projector is nearly 40 years old and is no longer supported with parts or service by the manufacturer. It is only the second planetarium projector in the Adler’s 78 years of operation.”

I tell time and weather with the stars, of course, but soon I will be able to tell these things just as easily with a hunk of wood. That’s right! Inovaxion has created a wooden bit of clock and weather station that no sensible person with an excellent collection of design oriented fun and helpful object would be able to turn down!

Designers at Inovaxion present the Woodstation: “[In a collaboration between] human-sized French company, INOVAXION, and a high-quality Chinese factory, AEROTIME, [this product was born.] When you get close to the WoodStation®, a movement sensor will detect you and will automatically [display] the product’s screen through the wood to give you information. … [The product's main characteristics are] based on coloured luminous icons given through the wood screen and activated by a simple motion of the hand. In lighted mode, this powerful device will track fluctuations of barometric pressure, indoor relative temperature and indoor relative hygrometry data to provide you the weather forecast 12 to 24 hours in advance. The product also manages Hour, Calendar and Alarm clock functions. Big colored icons show sunny - partly cloudy - cloudy - rainy / snowy and stormy. Hour, Calendar, and Alarm clock are shown in red. This practical and useful product is suitable for both A/C Adaptor and batteries, which gives you the option to show it everywhere.”

Sébastien Wallet, a designer at Inovaxion, tells us that this awesome hunk of wood will be available at big shops on the French market in as little as 1 month! Lucky French and their awesome economy… wait nevermind. Buy this clock and stimulate your country’s economy!

A $3 million dollar projector? What does that even look like? Gearlog did some digging and found out that appropriation was requested by the planetarium to replace an awesome (but obsolete) 40-year old Zeiss Mark VI star projector with a newer model (pictured above).

Anyone with a planetarium in town will remember the Mark VI from school field trips: the 2.5 ton, 1350 watt giant (pictured below) can project a dynamic image of thousands of stars and constellation onto the ceiling of a massive dome for the viewing pleasure of a reclined audience. Its replacement would have been much more impressive, had it been granted: the Universarium Model IX, which is a $3.5 million dollar astronomical projection unit capable of accurately representing a night sky in full color and motion. The proposal was never granted. But politics aside, that's not exactly your school's transparency projector. You can check out the spec sheet at Zeiss's official site. Model IX photo from Picassa user Lito [Gearlog, NYT]

Videogame publisher XS Games has lifted the veil on the innovative AirG peripheral that will accompany an upcoming video game known as PopStar Guitar. The AirG won’t be available across all three platforms, but will remain a Nintendo Wii exclusive to offer new game play dimensions to music rhythm games. What the AirG actually is, is an air guitar that enables gamers to drop all pretense and sense of self-consciousness by attaching the peripheral to the Wii Remote. Each copy of PopStar Guitar will be packaged with a couple of compact AirG peripherals for just $59.99, enabling you to jump straight into multiplayer mode the moment you unwrap the game in your living room.

As recently announced, PopStar Guitar will feature original mastered tracks from mega pop artists Rihanna, The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and leading bands Maroon 5, 3 Doors Down, Simple Plan and Blink 182. The game puts players in the role of a lead guitarist on a musical journey that begins with forming a garage band and progresses to the ultimate performance on the main stage of a worldwide “Battle of the Bands” competition. PopStar Guitar features twelve playable characters, 25 visually stunning venues and more than 50 pop songs. Players can customize their band, giving it a unique look, as well as win a number of VIP vehicles, so their band can travel like real pop stars! With three difficulty levels, PopStar Guitar will feature a single player Career Mode along with single player and multi-player mini-games.

While PopStar Guitar will be released on both the Nintendo Wii and PS2, only the AirG peripheral is available on an exclusive basis to the Wii, whereas folks who are still rocking to the venerable PS2 can pick up PopStar Guitar for just $29.99, with their gaming sessions fulfilled by officially licensed PS2 non-USB guitar peripherals. You game?

Screw green engines and automated driving. This is what I really want: Carcade, a system that captures the window landscape in real time to create gaming stages on the fly. Created by Andreas Nicolas Fischer, Martin Kim Luge and Korbinian Polk—three students at Berlin University of the Arts—Carcade opens the possibility to never-ending gaming, with the potential to shut up kids doing long-distance car travel all over the world. Permanently. And only for that, my friends, these guys should get the Peace Nobel Prize.

Their demo is quite good. They used a webcam connected to a laptop. The program then analyzes the video, detecting the outline of the landscape and using it as the terrain for a shoot-em-up kind of game, in which you maneuver a spaceship to obtain stars. Best of all, they even implemented a two-player game mode.

It's a lot simpler than the airplane racing simulator we covered yesterday, but my guess is that this could be made even more sophisticated by using laser meters to actually detect depth of the landscape and make more complex, multidimensional game stages. Out of the 170 teams vying for the $1 million prize, these two managed to impress the most; the winning gizmo was the M-25 portable power system, which is already being sold to the US Army for "limited use in the field." Contestants were tasked with creating a new wearable power solution to juice up energy-hungry military gear (GPS units, night-vision goggles, head-mounted PMPs, etc.) without weighing soldiers down, and the winning device combined "DuPont's direct-methanol fuel cell technology with SFC's fuel cell and battery system." Yeah, we're totally expecting a PSP / DS compatible version of this before the holidays.

[Via FuelCellWorks, thanks Adam]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
