O2 have unleashed a Pay-as-you-go mobile broadband dongle on the UK, with some pricing that is going to cause consternation amongst other Operators:

By launching its USB modem at £29.99, O2 is following up its commitment to offer its customers great products with clear pricing and no strings attached.

Pay & Go mobile broadband customers will also benefit from O2’s new coverage checker and 50-day Happiness Guarantee. Since these new customer-focused measures were launched in November, O2 has seen a considerable drop in the number of returned USB modems, showing that simple, honest advice has led to consumers being better informed at the time of purchase.

O2 Mobile Broadband Pay & Go offers users a fast and easy way to access the internet at home and on the move, without the need for long-term contracts. Customers will be able to access download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps and will have unlimited access to over 6,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK, through our partners at The Cloud.

O2 Mobile Broadband Pay & Go is available in a range of options starting at just £2 a day for 500MB, £7.50 a week for 1GB or £15 a month for 3GB depending on their needs, all with unlimited Wi-Fi access.

Available across the UK, the O2 Mobile Broadband Pay & Go service offers:

500MB, 1GB or 3GB download allowance

Unlimited Wi-Fi access to over 6,000 hotspots in locations such as McDonalds and major airports (e.g. Heathrow, Gatwick)

No minimum term contract

50 Day Happiness Guarantee 1

24/7 support from a UK Call Centre

Plug and play for easy set-up

Fast wireless access to the internet on the move 2

Customers can purchase O2 Mobile Broadband Pay & Go in any O2 retail store, by going to the O2 Online store at www.o2.co.uk, through a number of our indirect partners such as Carphone Warehouse or by calling O2 customer service on 08705 214000.

Footnote: Unfortunately at this moment you can’t actually find the the PAYG mobile broadband offering on the O2 site - unless I’ve missed something REALLY obvious! However, I’m sure that will be sorted within the next couple of day

A crazy site appropriately named Oddmusic has revealed a totally new musical instrument called the Harmonic Generator. Its 64 piano strings are tuned into 32 chromatic notes (so just shy of 3 octaves' worth). The strings are stroked by bristle brushes attached to motors that are activated by the standard piano keyboard. Lest you thought the mechanical paint brushes were weird, read on.

No, even more bizarre are the guitar pickups: The device uses 12 of them, focused on each of the 12 notes in the musical scale, feeding back what they hear to a speaker transducer positioned at one end of the massive "resonance hull."

Unfortunately, Oddmusic doesn't yet have sample tracks from the Harmonic Generator, which was created by a guy named Isac Zal and was not, as I had initially imagined, a joint effort of Tim Burton and the late Dr. Seuss. The site does at least describe the sound, calling it "a symphony inside the belly of a whale." Somehow, I think that would make ole Theodore Geisel proud.
The acclaimed Nokia E71 is now available for $99.99 on a three-year contract from Rogers after rebates, but be sure to hound your sales rep for promo prices - apparently list price is $349.99 on a 3-year plan, $374.99 on a 2-year plan, $524.99 on a 1-year plan and $749.99 with no strings attached. It’s a fine alternative to the BlackBerry, and a long time coming. The E71 sports a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, QVGA 320 x 240 screen, S60 Symbian OS, a solid metal battery door which adds some nice weight, and an exceptionally slim profile. It’s not up on the Rogers online store yet, but should be there soon.

If you use a thumb-drive sans security your data is just a vacant USB port away from being thrown up on the internet, assets exposed to the world like some drunken heiress. Even secure devices, whether they use biometric scanners, hardware encryption, or even more extreme measures, all leave a lot to be desired: no standards means limited compatibility, and secure data you can't reliably access might as well be random strings of binary digits. The answer could be IEEE 1667, the "Standard Protocol for Authentication in Host Attachments of Transient Storage Devices." Among other things it would enable you to restrict where your thumb drive will work and, conversely, what thumb drives your machine will accept. If it becomes the standard it was born to be you'll be able to apply the same policies whether you're opening Windows 7, cuddling with Snow Leopard, or making jazz-hands with something a little less mainstream. Will it succeed? CNET's Jon Oltsik thinks Microsoft's support for the standard is a good omen and says "Let's all follow Redmond's lead in this case for the greater good." That's certainly not something you hear every day, but this time we're game.

IEEE 1667 pledges secure portable storage for all originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 08:28:00 EST.

GPS-based navigation devices are set to sizzle on Black Friday as device makers have cut prices to under $100 for the product that ranks high on many consumers' wish lists.

TomTom is currently offering its ONE 125 GPS model for $100 till Nov. 30, after which it will go up to $130. The TomTom ONE 125 comes without maps of Canada but offers voice instructions.

Rival Garmin will have its nuvi 200 product available for $97 at Wal-Mart on Black Friday only, says Dealnews, which has been tracking the prices. The nuvi 200 is listed currently at the suggested retail price of $200 on Garmin's website.

GPS devices, a hot ticket item last year, seem to be still popular with buyers. Three of the top ten products on Amazon.com's electronics best seller list are navigation systems. TomTom's ONE 125 ranks sixth.

Another sweet deal from a smaller brand is the Nextar P3 for $70 and free shipping, says Dealnews.

GPS makers are hoping the attractive prices will draw in customers. More than 50% of the total GPS devices sold during the year are in the fourth quarter, says Ralf Hug, vice president of product management for Airbiquity, which makes wireless transport products.

"Retailers are worried about not getting enough people into the stores," says Hug. "Maybe PND (personal navigation devices) product category could be that lead into the store."

Last year, GPS devices saw one of the most aggressive price discounts in electronics as retailers used the category as a "loss leader", or a draw to get shoppers to loosen their purse strings.

This year most personal navigation products lack differentiation, which could make it more difficult for the companies that are competing to get attention, says Hug. "There's been a lack of innovation over the last two years," he says. "Everyone's delivered a me-too type of product."

Emoji: if you've never heard of it, that's because you're probably not living in Japan, 12 years old, and a highly social schoolgirl. An emoticon standard that is widely used in the country, it was included in the iPhone 2.2 firmware on the SoftBank network, but not for anyone else. Apparently fed up with his lack of ability to graphically express his numerous LOLs, a developer has figured out a simple tweak to enable these icons system-wide, no matter which carrier you're with. Naturally, to show anything other than unintelligible strings of Unicode the recipient's phone has to support Emoji emoticons, but apparently all 2.2 iPhones, hacked or not, can display the icons. The patching process, after the jump, isn't terribly complicated.

You need to edit the file /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist on the device -> whether you use a jailbreak to achieve this or merely some iTunes backup editor is up to you.

Add the following boolean key as ‘true’: KeyboardEmojiEverywhere

Then merely go to the Keyboards section of the Settings app, hit Japanese, and turn on Emoji. Will work for any text field/view in the OS, including on websites, AND including the titles of items on SpringBoard (e.g. if you save a bookmark to the home screen).

The easiest way to do with will probably be to run your iPhone as an SFTP server, which is as easy as installing a package or two on your jailbroken phone. After that it's just a matter of editing the config file and emoting to your friends, again and again, via creepy little icons.

Carbon fiber is showing up in some unlikely places, like in the body of a specially designed guitar. Blackbird has had a steel-string guitar on the market for about a year, and now adds this nylon-string version to the mix. This one's a bit bigger than its steel-stringed brandmate, but at an ultra-lightweight 3 pounds, it's every bit as travel-worthy.

We like the idea of an acoustic guitar designed from the ground up, using computer modeling to create an acoustically efficient sound chamber. Carbon fiber is so strong, the top of the guitar can be paper-thin for better sound. Blackbird creator and techno-luthier Joe Luttwak tells us his hand-made instruments have been improved, and sound better than any other travel guitars on the market.

But how does this $1899 guitar stack up to our comparably-priced Martin D-28, the gold standard in acoustic git-boxes? Joe says he'll lend us one of his Blackbirds to test soon, and we'll play them against each other. If this Blackbird sounds as good as it looks, we'll be flying into the dark black night.

Blackbird's Rider Nylon guitar is actually not made of nylon—ok its strings are—but instead it's far more highly-tech'd and its body and neck are actually carbon fiber. It may not be bullet-proof, but Blackbird says its "nearly indestructible," making it perfect as a travel guitar. The material has meant a few design tweaks over a traditional shape: it's far squarer, and the sound holes are now a single hole moved up to the neck, and dubbed a "soundscoop" instead—apparently this makes for a better sound response. The other side-effect is that it's light enough at 3-pounds to fit into an aircraft overhead locker. High-tech costs though—the nylon string model is $1,900, a smaller steel-stringed version is $1,600.

The Blackbird Rider Nylon is an odd guitar, a mix of the traditional and the high-tech. First, the "nylon" in the name refers to the strings -- the guitar itself is made from carbon fiber, from the single piece body to the hollow neck. If we were making a carbon fiber guitar, we'd probably show off about it in the name.

Second, the guitar looks more like a Lute -- not a bad thing, but certainly a design departure for such a traditional instrument as the classical guitar. Less baroque is the "Soundscoop", a curved hole which sits up by the tenth fret instead of in the middle of the sound board. Blackbird says that this, combined with the all-in-one body and neck and the super-thin (1/32") carbon fiber contruction, provides better tonal response.

The Rider is built for travel. Blackbird claims that it is "nearly indestructible" (maybe Pete Townshend should try it out) and it fits in an airplane's overhead locker. It also weighs just three pounds. How much is this high-tech axe? $1900 for the nylon stringed classical version, and $1600 for a smaller, steel-stringed model.
