The fixed-mobile convergence market (FMC) is on the brink of very interesting times, according to analysts at ABI Research. UMA-based Wi-Fi dual-mode solutions have seen some significant penetration in both Europe and North America thanks to successful market introductions by T-Mobile in the US (T-Mobile @Home) and Orange (unik) in France, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The first real competitive solution that could rival Wi-Fi-based products has now appeared, in the form of Sprint’s nationwide (US) femtocell-based AIRAVE solution. The questions remain: is there room for both types of convergence in the market; and which solution is best placed to succeed?

ABI Research forecasts a total of 103 million access points of both types to be in service by 2013. Vice president and research director Stuart Carlaw says, “We expect cellular-based femtocells to have taken over the baton from UMA- and SiP-based Wi-Fi solutions by 2013, seizing 62% of the market.” He goes on to add that, “Although UMA-based Wi-Fi solutions have seen early gains in greenfield markets, these solutions have not proliferated much outside their current carrier footprints. This can be attributed partly to the carriers’ desire to assess femtocell developments, but also to lingering concerns regarding the concept of Wi-Fi based fixed-mobile convergence.”

ABI Research’s recent study “Fixed-Mobile Convergence” examines the opportunity for UMA and SIP in converged network services, dual-use handsets, Wi-Fi access points, picocells and femtocells. It includes a review of the current standards position and activities of the major vendors.

The study forms part of two of the firm’s subscription Research Services, Mobile Networks and Consumer Mobility, which also include Research Reports, other Research Briefs, Market Data, Online Databases, ABI Vendor Matrices, ABI Insights, and analyst inquiry support.

ABI Research is a leading market research firm focused on the impact of emerging technologies on global consumer and business markets.
Check out this simple yet rugged speaker known as the Hive Audio System that was specially designed to be placed in an outdoor environment. The Hive Audio System will come with a sound tube that prevents the elements from harming its innards, while amplifying sound as it reverberates. The rugged base adds to the overall stability, and this wireless speaker can be linked to other similar units to form a “hive”. One can only wonder when a design concept such as this from Christopher Stuart will be realized.

It's just a speaker, a wireless connection, a big-bottomed battery and a plastic dome to protect it from whatever Mother Nature may fling at it. It looks like a futuristic ashtray.

Though commissioned, it doesn't appear to be in production. So you'll just have to put up with one of those giant polystyrene boulders for now.

Question: Why do industrial designers still commission Flash websites that prevent others linking to their work?

Check out this simple yet rugged speaker known as the Hive Audio System that was specially designed to be placed in an outdoor environment. The Hive Audio System will come with a sound tube that prevents the elements from harming its innards, while amplifying sound as it reverberates. The rugged base adds to the overall stability, and this wireless speaker can be linked to other similar units to form a "hive". One can only wonder when a design concept such as this from Christopher Stuart will be realized.

Sony Ericsson, one of the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturers, has appointed public relations and social media specialist Wolfstar to advise it on its global social media communications strategy.

The global campaign will initially include online monitoring and evaluation of Sony Ericsson’s online brand reputation, as well as establishing relationships with online customers and influencers. Wolfstar will also be counselling Sony Ericsson on developing social media outreach programmes to support the brand and products.

The account will be lead by Wolfstar managing director Stuart Bruce, who said: “This is a global programme that is looking to develop a social media communications strategy that can be implemented across all of Sony Ericsson’s international market units to help them develop consumer thought leadership online.”

Wolfstar reports to Global Communications and Public Relations at Sony Ericsson. Merran Wrigley, VP, Head of External Communications, Global Communications and PR said: “Wolfstar not only demonstrated a great understanding of social media, but this was under pinned by a good grounding in traditional corporate communications and a passion for our brand.”

Compal's been a vocal supporter of Intel's MID followup to the tragic UMPC platform ever since It was announced in April of last year. Hell, the Taiwanese ODM even dedicated a team to crank out all the devices expected in the first half of 2008 but never came thanks in part, to Intel's Atom slippage. Now Compal looks ready to toss a MID to consumers (either direct or through a third-party manufacturer, it's not clear) with the unveiling of this handheld at Intel's IDF in San Francisco. The QWERTY slider packs GPS, a Linux-based OS with media player, browser, eMail and IM clients, and Option's GlobeTrotter Connect and GTM501 HSPA data kit offering tri-band HSUPA/HSDPA and quad-band GPRS/EDGE connectivity the world-over.

According to ABI Research, the MID market is likely to be the first real example of a greenfield situation in which all mobile operating systems start on the same equal footing. The Linux OS in the form of Moblin, LiMo and Maemo looks ready to take the lion’s share of the MID market and is set to capture unit volumes of 50 millions units per annum in 2013.

The research company’s VP and research director Stuart Carlaw said: “Maemo is already in this space thanks to the patronage of Nokia; Moblin will benefit from tight integration with Atom and Intel’s drive; and LiMo is actively being positioned for this market. The flexibility, customization and very positive cost comparison to Windows Mobile looks set to ensure that Linux takes the leading role in this market.”

As you’re probably already aware, the concept of a single OS that covers MIDs, smartphones and mid-tier devices is very attractive indeed. However in reality, only LiMo and potentially Moblin hold the possibility of achieving this. I wouldn’t count out Maemo, as it is pushed by such a player as Nokia…

More information on ABI’s “Mobile Linux” research is available from their website.

The Mobile Internet Devices (MID) market is likely to be the first real example of a greenfield situation in which all mobile operating systems start on the same equal footing, without the baggage of previous histories such as existed in the smartphone market. The Linux OS, in the form of Moblin, LiMo and Maemo, looks ready to take the lion’s share of the MID market and is set to capture unit volumes of 50 millions units per annum in 2013.

ABI Research vice president and research director Stuart Carlaw says, “Maemo is already in this space thanks to the patronage of Nokia; Moblin will benefit from tight integration with Atom and Intel’s drive; and LiMo is actively being positioned for this market. The flexibility, customization and very positive cost comparison to Windows Mobile looks set to ensure that Linux takes the leading role in this market.”

One of the more significant aspects of the Linux OS in this market is its ability to provide a converged platform that can span multiple device segments. The concept of a single OS that covers MIDs, smartphones and mid-tier devices is very attractive indeed. In reality, only LiMo and potentially Moblin hold the possibility of achieving this.

“Mobile Linux,” provides a picture of the projected uptake of Linux in two major applications, as a commercial OS and as an RTOS replacement. It offers a frank analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the Linux solution, and describes major drivers and barriers that are dictating the growth of the mobile Linux market
