It looks like Tata Motors is taking one step forward and one step back this week, with it announcing plans to launch an electric version of its Indica hatchback in Norway within a year while also letting out word that it has abruptly halted construction of the plant in Singur, India that was to have built its budget-priced Nano compact. That latter development was apparently the result of a long-standing dispute with farmers, who are demanding the return of some of the land that was seized by the state government, and had previously caused construction of the plant to be postponed for five days. For its part, Tata says it is now apparently considering relocating the construction site, which would likely cause the planned October launch of the Nano to be delayed.

Read - Reuters, "India's Tata to launch electric car in Norway in 1 yr"
Read - Tech-On, "Tata Suspends Construction of 'nano' Plant"

[Thanks, Samit]

Now they [Sistema] along with their newly acquired company, Shyam Telecom, became the first new telecom operator to get pan-India start-up spectrum to offer mobile services.

India’s Communication and IT Minister A Raja has signed the file for allotting CDMA spectrum to Shyam Telecom for 21 circles except Rajasthan where the company is already offering services under the Oasis brand.

Shyam-Sistema has started rolling out network in various parts of the country and is hoping to start the services soon. They will be the third private CDMA-based pan-India operator apart from Anil Ambani’s Rcom and Tata Teleservices.

Other new telecom operators like Datacom, Unitech, Loop Telecom and Swan Telecom got the GSM frequencies in six circles and the government is looking at the availability of spectrum in other circles, too.

Your dreams of riding in the ultimate cheapo deathbox have just gotten a little bit more real. According to a report, Tata will begin production of its diminutive, ultra-affordable Nano car this Fall. The $2500 vehicle is generally known as the cheapest car in the world, though worries over inflation suggest that its price-point may move above the intended figure. In other news, sources say that Tata plans a "greener" version of the vehicle in addition to the original model, which -- if it happens -- will likely be a real knockout punch for penny-pinchers with an Earth-hugging mindset. Still, you'll probably have to ship it from India, which would burn a lot of fossil fuels, which would be bad for the environment... oh just buy an old Yugo.

[Via Autoblog Green]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Richard Branson's Virgin Group announced its first business in Russia, a WiMAX network called Virgin Connect and which covers 20 cities in Russia. The new Virgin venture is launched through an agreement with Swiss based telecoms investors, Trivon, a company which holds the required licenses and frequencies for WiMAX-based services.

Virgin Connect will provide broadband Internet connectivity, voice and value added services to residential, small and medium businesses, and larger corporate customers.

Commenting on the announcement, Sir Richard Branson said: "We have entered Russia with Virgin Connect because we believe the potential for growth in the Russian broadband market is extremely exciting… Virgin Connect will demystify the complex tariff jungle and bureaucracy seen in the market over the last years. We will provide a fresh and human customer experience to Russians and believe that Trivon is the ideal partner to deliver this. Virgin Connect plans to gain a market share of 10% within 5 years in this promising market."
