The third quarter of this year ended with some interesting wireless developments, but industry leaders remained entrenched in their US-rankings.

With the FCC’s approval of the deal, Verizon had cleared their last regulatory hurdle in their bid to acquire wireless carrier Alltel. The merger will give Verizon Wireless the subscriber-base to leap-frog over AT&T into the No. 1 spot in the US wireless market. But, until the deal is finalized, Verizon Wireless will be playing second-fiddle to AT&T.

AT&T led the pack with 74.9 million subscribers. The US wireless market leader managed 2 million net subscriber adds in the third quarter. Verizon Wireless took second place with 2.1 million new subscribers added in Q3 2008, ending the quarter with 70.8 million customers under its wing. Sprint Nextel managed to hang on to its third-place position, despite a 1.3 million subscriber loss. T-Mobile USA and Alltel brought up the rear as the fourth and fifth largest US wireless carriers by subscriber counts.

In the end, Verizon Wireless is only runner-up to AT&T on a technicality. Next year, Verizon Wireless will eclipse AT&T as the leading wireless carrier in the US.

By the numbers:

Verizon Wireless

Sprint

T-Mobile

Alltel

Virgin Mobile USA announced today the official launch of two new first-of-a-kind features designed to empower its prepaid and postpaid customers with the latest mobile social networking technology. These new initiatives, both available at no additional cost beyond normal internet access charges, offer Virgin Mobile USA customers new and innovative ways to hook up:

"Connect," a new social networking dashboard designed to give Helio By Virgin Mobile members quick and easy access to the latest updates from certain social media and networking sites; and

"Mobile Lounge," a Virgin Mobile USA customer-exclusive mobile community now available on the VirginXL storefront.

Connect:

Connect ushers in a new era of community integration for Helio By Virgin Mobile members, allowing them to display friend updates and activity from social media and networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube in an easy-to-use, dashboard-style mobile interface which connects users directly to those sites. Launching first on Helio devices -- the Ocean, Mysto, Fin, Heat and Drift -- Connect will roll out to Virgin Mobile USA prepaid mobile phones during the first quarter of 2009.

Instead of logging out of a social networking site in order to access another one, customers can use Connect to conveniently aggregate status updates, invitations and requests, new photos and videos, comments, messages and more, all in one place, free of charge. Virgin Mobile USA customers can also use Connect's integrated standard RSS reader to stay up-to-date with their favorite news sites, blogs and e-zines.

Mobile Lounge:

"Mobile Lounge," the first mobile-only community exclusive to a single wireless carrier, provides a social network for Virgin Mobile USA customers to share ideas and opinions. Its robust user interface allows users to see which friends are online and features micro-blogging capabilities, discussion boards, chat rooms and profile creation and contests.

Virgin Mobile USA also continues to offer rewards to its customers. Members of Mobile Lounge can earn points for writing blogs, posting photos and winning contests, and then redeem those points for credits for wireless usage. This builds on the success of Sugar Mama and Studio V, an online community where Virgin Mobile USA customers create, share and sell their own ringtones and wallpapers for rewards.

Mobile Lounge is accessible on Virgin Mobile USA mobile phones such as the Shuttle, Flare, Slash and others from the VirginXL storefront, which provides members with access to all of the latest services, games, ringtones and news for just 15 cents per day.

Social Networking:

With these new features, Virgin Mobile USA has firmly established itself as a leader in mobile social networking. "Helio By Virgin Mobile is continuing to deliver mobile social networking in new ways, allowing members to interact with friends across their entire social universe and share experiences in real time directly from their mobile devices like never before," added Jeremy Wasser, Director of Media & Social Networking for Virgin Mobile USA.

The new 'Connect' and 'Mobile Lounge' services continue the tradition that Helio carved out as a pioneer in mobile social media and networking. With industry leading solutions for MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and more from Virgin Mobile USA, members will always stay connected.

I must say that it comes as something of a surprise that the president elect of the United States, who is reportedly a Mac user, plays his MP3s on a Zune. Sure, I don’t care what music gadgets people use, but the Zune has been languishing and has not seen too many personal endorsements from high-profile users, and Barack Obama is about as high-profile as you can get.

The report as made to Philadelphia’s City Paper:

He walked majestically across the gym floor in his track pants and sweat shirt. I did a double take, and soon after that, looked around the gym to see if anyone else knew he was here. Nobody seemed to notice. But he hopped on the machine next to me and broke a mean sweat while reading a copy of USA Today and listening to his Zune.

So there you have it folks, Barack Obama uses a Zune and Steve Jobs possibly wants his vote back (depending on which way he voted).
Those who believed that the benefits of advanced voice applications and multimedia are available only residents of mega-cities have to change their minds. Thanks to VoIP-carrier-class solution developed by Nortel specifically for regional operators, subscribers who are even in the remotest parts of the United States and Canada, will now be able to take advantage of the same services VoIP, as residents of major metropolitan centers.

Communication Server Nortel Communication Server (CS) 1500 has enabled more than 120 North American regional operators to bring telephony services to a qualitatively new level. Operators Goldfield Telephone (USA, Iowa) and Hood Canal Communications (USA, Washington) - this is just a few big names from the list of regional carriers that use the NGN solution from Nortel to overcome «the digital divide» in their regions and to provide the latest types of communications to their customers.

Multimedia software IP-switching CS 1500 has become a conduit for regional suppliers of the most modern and innovative VoIP-applications, such as «Automatic operator» (guaranteed to answer an incoming call) or «intelligent call» (effectively instantaneous switching calls to a mobile home and work phones).

The fourth version switchboard CS 1500 provides the introduction of more powerful, widely popular North American consumer applications. These include: integrated web portal that allows calls to make a single click directly through your address book, user-friendly Web access to voice mail, as well as weather forecasting service with access to a user's query to all the updates in real time. Furthermore, in keeping with the concept giperpodklyuchennosti prevailing in the modern business environment in the 4 th version of CS 1500 is implemented to connect VoIP services via cable modem. In so doing removed any time and space limitations to maintain the connection.

For operators based switches DMS-10, as well as other technologies, widespread today in the operator of telephone systems, such as DCO and EWSD, provides for cost-phased transition to CS 1500.

File this under rumors, but since weve already heard China Mobile is preparing to launch its own AppStore-kind-of-service , we do believe theres some merit in this story as well apparently, the worlds...

File this under rumors, but since we’ve already heard China Mobile is preparing to launch its own AppStore-kind-of-service, we do believe there’s some merit in this story as well — apparently, the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of number of subscribers is working on its mobile OS.

And since I mentioned China Mobile’s AppStore plans, that was confirmed by the company’s CEO Wang Jianzhou, who said: “We will set up our own shop and encourage content providers to offer their own applications via our application shop,” during his keynote session at this year’s GSMA Mobile Asia Congress.

Back to the mobile OS “thing.” It is said that it will be known as “Ophone” and that it will be launched soon — according to Interfax China, the first such devices are expected to launch in the first-quarter of next year. The rumor goes on suggesting China Mobile is already working with manufacturers - Lenovo is reportedly one of them.

The Ophone is described as a customised product that will embed a series of China Mobile’s services. It is a product of China Mobile’s strategy to compete with handset makers which push their own services bundled with phones (i.e. Nokia with its Ovi offering).

Finally, it’s the Android that will most likely be used as a basis for the Ophone, which is a good thing considering this move could/will significantly increase the interest for the platform — this is not to say Android is some under dog no one knows about.

The company has reportedly secured funding from twenty investors, most of them from Croatia and some from the U.S., and has scheduled to launch its services during the summer of 2009.

In an interview with the local newspaper, Telcro’s Kresimir Profaca expressed his optimism for the new venture, despite the fact that Croatian market is being saturated with penetration level of 120%. However, thanks to multiple SIM ownership - the real penetration rate could be as low as 60%.

All in all, it will be interesting to watch how the first MVNO plays out in Croatia…

If you travel abroad a lot, you might want to leave your T-Mobile G1 at home… That is, unless you want to rack up a nice chunk of change in roaming charges.

A tipster recently dropped a note over to the folks at Gizmodo, telling them that his data roaming bill had reached $102.85… Even though he had data roaming, data sync and 3G turned off on his G1. Puzzling.

The tipster was from the US, and was bound for the UK on a trip. Naturally, he called T-Mo to inquire about international calling and data charges. After talking with a representative he was told that data roaming would be charged at $10/MB, however if he did not access the internet while away everything would be a-ok. In reality, while in the UK he was charged roughly $0.15 for every 3 to 7 minutes on average… and not all of it was from calls and texts… as he put it, it was ‘almost as if the phone is pinging’. Looks like it was.

Upon returning home he picked up the phone and called T-Mobile yet again. This time with a bit of a bee in his bonnet. Naturally things didn’t go too well, and after a few conversations a supervisor finally revealed that the T-Mobile G1 always accesses the internet… Even if you are not making calls or sending messages… and even if the data roaming features are turned off. The advice given at the end of the conversation from T-Mobile? ‘The phone should have been left in the USA to avoid these charges’.

My word. I’m speechless.
