When we think “wireless headset” we’re usual conjure up images of Bluetooth headsets and headphones beaming phones calls and music to our ears. Nikon’s Media Port UP headset looks to change our notion of what a “headset” can do.

The over-the-ear style headset features a flip-down monocle display that can be used to watch videos or surf the web. With 4GB (Nikon Media Port UP300) or 8GB (Nikon Media Port UP300x) of onboard storage, the Nikon Media Port UP headset can download data from the web (via a WiFi connection) to enjoy later or just play video and music. Integrated motion sensors allow for hands-free webpage navigation media playback controls through head-motions (up, down, left, and right).

The Nikon Media Port UP headset brings your favorite media with you for on-the-road pleasure. Because, you know, real life is just so boring.

Nokion Media Port UP headset - Resistance is futile.

The Nikon Media Port UP300 ($580) and UP300x might not catch on in the mass market, but it’s definitely an interesting idea. Now, if this Borg-style headset were to sport a Bluetooth connection to link up with a smartphone, would anyone use it?

New MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and probably an updated MacBook Air are coming up next week, at the Apple MacBook 2008 event. The MacBook and MacBook Pro are long due for a case redesign but, beyond that, little is known for sure. Here we have collected all the pieces of information we have about them. All the facts, the logical rumors, and the crazy ones, which we will keep updating through the coming days until the MacBook Event liveblog kicks off.

The facts

• There's an Apple event on October 14 and we will be there to liveblog the pants out of it.

• Long overdue, a new MacBook line will be unveiled, with newly-designed MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

• Remember that Apple told resellers not to stock MacBooks or iPods (this was just before the Let's Rock announcement).

The logical and probable rumors

• The MacBook Air, being a recent design, will probably get a features bump, but not a redesign. This could to be supported by price cuts during the summer.

• Despite the pretty mock ups, the MacBook and the MacBook Pro will probably look like the MacBook Air, but on a different scale. In previous generations, there was always a new model that introduced a new look, then the rest followed up.

• Several images of the base top, the base bottom and the display frame of the MacBook Pro have surfaced. It is still not clear if these images are real or not, even while they do look real indeed.

• Some people alleged that these images show a shell carved out of a single piece of aluminum, using a new and revolutionary manufacturing process code-named "Brick".

• However, there are several reasons to believe this may not be the case, starting with an Apple patent detailing a new welding process. However, both manufacturing techniques may have been combined for this product.

• The MacBook in the teaser invitation may be the 13-inch model. Assuming the Apple logo is the same size as before, that is. They have changed its size before.

• Following Apple's commitment for greener computers, all displays in the upcoming MacBook line may be LED-based.

Crazy rumors and wishful thinking

• The usual blurry MacBook spyshots have appeared, some of which, like this one, have been proven to be fake.

• The glass iPhone trackpads are most probably just that, fake.

• Some crazy people really wish to see a touch notebook.

• There's even more crazy people that think that a semi-transparent MacBook Pro may appear, based on an Apple patent.

• Some really really crazy people have been dreaming about tablet Macs since 2007 and before.

Now the Internet giant has released Yahoo Go 3.0 for Symbian S60 to bring its voice-enabled search to the world’s most used smartphone platform.

Once Yahoo Go is installed, users can access the voice-enabled search with a single click from a home screen. Unfortunately, not all users are “affected with the voice.” Initially, Yahoo Go 3.0 only supports those users living in select countries — including U.S., UK, India, Singapore, The Philippines and Canada.

As for the features supported, you can speak to your phone to find such things as flight numbers, locations, web site names, local businesses, and more… As usual, more information is available on Yahoo’s mobile products website.

He will be released from U.S. operator AT & T. The unit is designed in the form factor of Slider, but the bottom made him not the usual digital and QWERTY-keyboard. On the characteristics of the model so far unknown. In the picture you can see that Propel supports the service AT & T Navigation. Presumably, the phone operator will cost $ 80 with a contract.
Alright, I have never had the urge to cuddle with my speakers. Nor do I wish for a set of speakers that would be comfortable to cuddle with. To me, speakers are meant to sit there and make noise, on occasion maybe have a bit of geek appeal. A cuddly bear speaker is just taking things too far. Besides the first time you watched an rated R movie on your laptop with one of these plugged in, it’s poor ears would probably go up in flames. It’s sometimes difficult to see who they could possibly be marketing something like this towards, luckily in this case they just came out and said it.

They think it’s an ideal gift for lovers. Seriously, if any guy ever bought me one of these that’d be it, frankly I’m not a five year old. Even if I were five, five year olds don’t need laptop speakers. The speakers plug in via USB as usual. They are currently being sold for $22.99 on Sourcing Map, but you might want to hurry since there are only three in stock. We all know what a horrible tragedy it’d be to miss out on these gems.

It's easy to mock Sony for its lumbering scale, extravagant products and slow development cycle. The thing is vast. It even has its own orchestra, comprising mostly of professional engineers.

In an interview with Charlie Rose, Sony CEO Howard Stringer is candid about Sony's problems, and displays a wit and humility that might come as a surprise to those who wonder why it can't be more like its competitors.

"All big companies settle into vertical silos," he told Rose, recounting the difficulties of cutting fat at a Japanese company. "We have to go into the kind of world that Steve Jobs has developed. We're going to communicate horizontally, because every device will talk to every other device."

Why Stringer would be the best replacement for Jobs

This is just for laughs, a chatroom transcript from a few months ago, where I got bored of the usual suspects who always get touted as the next Apple Lord. And if you forget certain important facts for a moment, it's a surprisingly good fit.

Rob B.: My dark horse for Jobs replacement: Howard Stringer
Joel J.: No fucking way. How could you look at Sony over the last four years and think Jobs would let Stringer anywhere near Apple?
Rob B.: Hey, you don't need to tell me about Sony's problems. I think it depends on Apple's ambitions. If it wants to change the world with consumer technology, it wants to become what Sony is. Stringer is not shy about praising Apple, or how its culture results in a lean, integrated approach to product development and the "horizontals," how services unite different products into an ecosystem.
Rob. B.: What Sony's troubles conceal is how well he's melded together a collection of divisions that used to act almost like separate companies. That's why Sony beat Toshiba in the optical disk format war, whatever the victory might be worth in the long run. This leads me to think that he might be the perfect man to handle it when Apple's growth turns dirty and complicated.
Rob. B.: Which it will.
Rob. B.: Finally, he's also an old media person. No-one would be in better shape to lead an Apple invasion on the rest of the entertainment industry outside of music. No-one understands the cable business better than Stringer, and it's cable, with its internets and tubes and bandwidth, which is really in a commanding position when it comes to the question, "who will control content provision?"
Rob B.: But yeah, wildly fantastical, I know.
Joel J.: That is far more reasoned than I expected you to be. I still think it's the wrong person symbolically, though. They'll want another visionary. I think.

People at Sony, he said, didn't even talk to one another.

"You've got to get mad that the iPod beat us," he told employees at a recent company retreat. "You've got to be mad when Samsung's market share goes up."

He knows that his unique status, as a Westerner in charge of one of Japan's most successful companies, is no accident: "I had to be careful, sylistically," he says of cuts. "... but it was easier for me to take ownership of that kind of ruthlessness than a Japanese executive."

In the interview, he often hints that his job is mostly about unifying something that would otherwise unravel. He also hints that Japan's strongly hierarchical business culture is another reason that change is slow. But when it comes to product development, polite inference gives way to a calculated bluntness.

"We also don't need to make it three times," he told Rose. "... We're so big, we make the same thing twice in different parts of the company, and no-one seems to notice."

Stringer once remarked that when he took over at Sony, he found a company that made more than 30,000 products: it's no wonder that its cool and innovative gear, like the recent Rolly MP3 gadget, and OLED televisions, don't seem part of a grand plan, such as can be seen behind iTunes' connections to almost all of Apple's hardware.

Sony, traditionally, doesn't have an ecosystem at all, just a relentless avalanche of new products. It owns a fifth of the music industry and one of the largest Hollywood studios, but you wouldn't know it from the lack of service integration in its gadgets.

All about to change, according to Stringer, who outlined plans centering around the PlayStation, which he said will ultimately link Sony's many products, acting as a hub to channel media to portable products, regardless of who makes them.

"It's a home server, sitting in the home .. delivering this content anywhere. It's in direct competition with AppleTV."

If it seems odd that he'd see Apple's least-successful current offering as its strongest in the long term, it's worth remembering his background: before taking command at Sony, he had decades of experience as a broadcaster in the U.S. But while Sony has its hands in every imaginable pot, including content-over-internet, it knows that it still has to make a success of its big investements: "If I fail to make Blu-Ray successful, it will be on our tombstone as Betamax 2," Stringer tells Rose.

More interesting points from the interview:

• On OLED television displays: 22" model out soon, and you "could wrap the display around your arm."

• He rather suggested that the cat is out the bag on free music, describing it as a commodity like "air or water." This was, however, to make a point: such a situation is never ever going to be accepted with movies, due to the capital wrapped up in making them.

• "The margins on computers are very small, but everything is becoming a computer."

• The Japanese have a marvelous sense of humor, he said, and have always been very welcoming to him, especially the younger generation at Sony.

• "People want, in bad times, to be entertained."

• "Video games have taken the place of external entertainment in the home," for adults and children alike.

• "Spiderman's been good to Sony."

• On being a Welsh-American working for Japanese company: "I am culturally confused. ... I'm a triple threat and a triple disaster, depending on your point of view. ... I'll wake up after my term at Sony with no friends anywhere, except airline pilots."

• A question: does this renewed focus on internal unity at Sony spell doom for Sony-Ericsson, or what?

WowWee's Mr. Personality bot made its debut way back at CES in January but, like some other WowWee products announced at the show, it's only just now made its way into availability. As you can see above, the bot's a close relative of WowWee's Tri-Bot, with it boasting the notable addition of an LCD screen for a face, which promises to "display his personality with animated and synchronized facial features." The bot also includes an SD card slot than can be used to add additional personalities, plus 64MB of internal memory, a remote control, all the usual sensors and, of course, plenty of fortune and joke-telling features that promise endless hours of fun / annoyance. Just be prepared to shell out for that robot companionship, as Mr. Personality's company will cost you a hefty $300.

[Via Robo Community]

It looks like those wanting a GPS unit that's a bit more stylish than the usual fare now have a new option to consider from Navman, which has just introduced is IDEO-designed S100 model. In addition to being shiny, this one measures just 13.5-mm thick, and packs a 4.3-inch "super flat" touchscreen, all the usual PMP features, 3D maps, Navman's trademark NavPix photo navigation, and SirfStar's InstaFix II, which promises to deliver a GPS fix five times faster than normal. It also uses Mio's new "Spirit" software with Glide Touch, which provides "simple tap and slide functionality," but apparently not full multi-touch. No word on a release 'round these parts, but folks in the UK will be able to pick this one up in November for $199, or roughly $340.

[Via NaviGadget]

We all know the internet is not a big truck, and the rolling blackouts in California not that long ago showed our power grid isn't either. Part of the solution could be a series of tubes, a new type of solar generator from a company called Solyndra that replaces the usual square solar roof panels with something that would make Senator Stevens proud. The company's photovoltaic rods are able to catch rays from any direction, meaning they don't need to be tilted to point at the sun. Also, since they're not shaped like a silicon kite, they don't need the same big, beefy installation brackets. This cuts installation costs in half and has helped to drive $1.2 billion in orders from eager would-be customers of this three-year-old startup. Want to see 'em for yourself? Head on down to the Solar Power International Expo next week in sunny San Diego.

[Via Make]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
