So what’s the difference between an 8900 and a 9000? Besides 100? Size, baby. Rogers’ new BlackBerry Curve looms dangerously close as dummy units hit stores, offering a slimmer, sexier version of the BlackBerry Bold and attempts to butt heads with Telus and Bell’s BlackBerry Storm for holiday supremacy. Before you start throwing your chips in with the RIM’s touchscreen smartphone, we still haven’t seen how much of the OS RIM will be able to repair after the Verizon train wreck, and even then, most consumers will feel more comfortable buying a BlackBerry that’s a BlackBerry rather than a BlackBerry that’s an iPhone. It should prove to be an interesting holiday season in Canadian wireless.

This dummy unit graciously given to me by the Rogers folks here in Ottawa is noticeably tighter than my BlackBerry Bold. The smaller soft keys provide greater screen real estate (but still not quite as big as the 9000), and the headphone jack closer to the top of the device is more convenient, although the transfer of most keys to the right side of the device may cause an uprising amongst our left-handed brethren.

The keypad itself is considerably softer than the Bold, while still retaining some bounce. It’s definitely not as snappy as you might be used to on the old Curve models, but that’s not a bad thing by any means. The keys along either edge deserve extra mention, as they not only hug the rim closely, but they also feel slightly more elevated, offering a clear boundary for your thumbs to remain within the luscious pool of QWERTY goodness. The keypad borrows distinctly from its 8300-series predecessors, yet it is not without some influence from the Bold; the 8900’s keys have slight ridges to make sure your thumbs catch them, but the gaps between the keys will be what really keep you in line. They’ve also done away with the elongated Shift keys on the bottom-left and right in favour of standardizing with the Bold’s layout.

Aside from that, the top of the device borrows design directly from the BlackBerry Storm, with Lock and Mute keys emblazoned into a single seamless button, and melting into the rest of the device face. I’m still hankering to try a real 8900 to see how the trackball differs, as this atomic upgrade promises to be tighter, cleaner and more precise. The in-store rep confirmed $179.99 on a three-year contract, and hinted that it will be available as soon as tomorrow. With the BlackBerry 8900 showing up on Wireless Wave, I certainly believe it. Other price options include $549 on 1 year, $524 on 2 with no data, $499 on 2 with data, or $499 on a 3-year plan with no data. Overall, the BlackBerry 8900 Curve should appeal to those not willing (or able) to trust RIM’s new touchscreen blitz.

I can't say that I'm surprised, but apparently people are taking offense to LEGO minifigs that have been modded (by BrickArms) to resemble terrorists and Nazis.

Mohammed Shaffiq of Muslim organisation The Ramadhan Foundation told The Sun the figures were 'absolutely disgusting'. He said: 'It is glorifying terrorism - the makers should be ashamed. We should be coming together to unite against terrorism but how is that possible when children are playing with toys like this?'

Last night the business's founder Will Chapman said: 'It's not my intention to glorify terrorism or Nazis - but kids love the bad guys. He added: 'I can see why people might get offended but that is not what I'm trying to do. We have sold thousands and thousands of them.'

He later added: 'CHA-CHING!'

When reached for comment, the Geekologie Writer had this to say about the figures: 'Finally, terrorists versus Nazis! PEW PEW.'

The first release of the iPhone game Flick Fishing got rave reviews. Now Freeverse, the creators of Flick Fishing, are adding even more fishing fun with version 1.2 of the game.

Aside from new fish and new fishing spots, the update also brings a tournament mode to the game. In tournament mode, players can compete against the computer, against another player on the same iPhone/iPod Touch, or even via Wi-Fi versus other flick fishermen.

For those who are unfamiliar with the game, Flick Fishing is an intuitive and beautiful fishing game. Players have to find the right combination of bait, location and flicking & reeling techniques that works with each type of fish. It definitely does not get its name from the fact that players cast the line with just a flick of their wrist. Nope. Do you know why it’s called Flick Fishing?

Like all iPhone/iPod Touch apps, Flick Fishing is available at Apple’s App Store for $0.99. Honestly I don’t know how it plays, because I don’t have an iPhone, but Freeverse has a video demo over at their site so go check that out if you’re interested.

If true, I love this: According to Pioneer, this 16-layer 400GB optical disc can be read in any normal Blu-ray player. And it's only the beginning, because they have planned 1TB for 2013.

The technology of the super multi-layer read-only disc is based on Blu-ray Disc (BD) with a breakthrough in material of reflective layers, according to Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan. The specifications of the pick-up head (PUH) of the disc is the same as those for the PUH of blank BD discs, and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD players.

How is this possible, you ask? I don't know for sure. In theory, it may be compatible, since they both use 405 nanometer heads, but then again, the track pitch is different (10 and 14 nanometer in the Pioneer super-disc versus 25 nanometer in a Blu-ray disc). But Pioneer seems pretty adamant about it in their statement. Maybe existing Blu-ray players would only need a firmware update? We will have to wait and see when it's released during the next year.
Through Billions of Searches in 2008, People Sought to Make Sense of
the World Around Them, Witnessing a Year of Passionate Politics, Olympic
Records, New Celebrities on the Rise and Market Meltdowns

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec 01, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Today Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ:YHOO) announced the most popular searches, themes, and trends as part of its 2008 Year in Review (yearinreview.yahoo.com), as told through the billions of searches conducted by millions of Yahoo! users around the globe every month.

"Every day, people turn to the web to learn more about the world around them. Their searches reveal which news events, personalities and issues made an impact in 2008," said Heather Cabot, Yahoo! Web Life Editor. "This year people were captivated by the historic U.S. Presidential election and Olympic triumphs. They also closely followed every facet of the economic downturn and enjoyed a little escapism by devouring celebrity gossip and delving into online video games."

The Yahoo! 2008 Year in Review not only presents the top ten searches, but overall themes and popular trends that bubbled to the surface, including the economy, politicians, news stories, Olympians, rising celebrities, influential women, and notable deaths. Also included in this year's review are additional top tens in select areas throughout Yahoo! such as Yahoo! Food, Shine, Tech, Green, Shopping, Travel, Games, Movies, Music, Local, Upcoming, Hot Jobs, most Buzzed-Up stories and clicked-on stories from yahoo.com.

By the Numbers -- Top 10 Overall Searches

1. Britney Spears

2. WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)

3. Barack Obama

4. Miley Cyrus

5. RuneScape

6. Jessica Alba

7. Naruto

8. Lindsay Lohan

9. Angelina Jolie

10. American Idol

Britney Spears has been the most popular search term and person for seven out of eight years. In 2008, she made a comeback with a new album, three MTV Music Awards, a sitcom guest star role and documentary on her rise, fall and career comeback.

Barack Obama was the second most searched for person in 2008. Headlines of his election victory received the most clicks than any other story on yahoo.com this year, and he was the third most searched term overall. Obama soared up the search ranks tremendously as the election campaign moved forward with consumers using Yahoo! Search to get informed, learn more about him and decide how to vote in this critically important election.

This year also marked the coming out party for Miley Cyrus, who discarded her Disney persona of "Hannah Montana" and launched her own album under her real name to make the top five. Jessica Alba's wedding and new baby spurred additional interest for her this year. With success at the box office and new baby pictures, Angelina Jolie continues to be in the public spotlight. Popular entertainment properties also were in demand, including wrestling (WWE), video games (RuneScape), anime (Naruto) and television (American Idol).

Market Meltdowns -- Top 10 Economic Searches

1. IRS Stimulus Checks

2. Oil Prices

3. Gold Prices

4. Gas Prices

5. Dow Jones

6. Sallie Mae

7. Stock Market

8. AIG

9. Foreclosures

10. Debt Consolidation

As 2008 came to a close, the nation's economic turmoil battled with the presidential election for the hearts and wallets of searchers. In February, the Treasury Department announced it would be disbursing stimulus checks to boost economic activity and taxpayers clamored to know if the check was actually in the mail. The fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis hit Wall Street hard in October as the Dow Jones Industrials fell to its lowest point, producing the biggest point drop in the Dow's 112-year history. Gas prices marked the only silver lining, falling sharply late in the year after reaching all-time highs during the summer.

Politics As Unusual -- Top 10 Politician Searches

1. Barack Obama

2. Sarah Palin

3. John McCain

4. Hillary Clinton

5. George Bush

6. Ron Paul

7. John Edwards

8. Mike Huckabee

9. Arnold Schwarzenegger

10. Mitt Romney

It was an election of many firsts. Not only did the U.S. elect an African American president for the first time but 2008 also had a notable campaign by former First Lady and Senator Hillary Clinton, and the first female nominee for Vice President in the Republican Party, Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Other candidates secured their fair share of searches as well. On the other hand, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't involved in the presidential race, but searches for the "Governator" beat Democratic vice presidential pick Joe Biden and Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

News Stories -- Top 10 News Stories

1. Hurricanes

2. Caylee and Casey Anthony

3. Election 2008

4. Pakistan

5. Pregnant Man

6. China

7. Iraq

8. Shelley Malil

9. Patrick Swayze

10. Afghanistan

Natural disasters affected virtually every corner of our planet. Hurricanes Gustav and Ike devastated the southern U.S. and the Caribbean. The fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan continued to be a focus throughout the year. But a few surprises to this list included the human interest stories that captivated the curiosity of the country, such as Caylee Anthony, a missing Florida toddler; the pregnant man who allegedly gave birth to a baby girl; and Patrick Swayze's battle against cancer.

Counting Olympic Gold -- Top 10 Olympian Searches

1. Michael Phelps

2. Leryn Franco

3. Serena Williams

4. Kobe Bryant

5. Shawn Johnson

6. Jennie Finch

7. Misty May Treanor

8. Ronaldinho

9. Alicia Sacramone

10. Nastia Liukin

A worldwide audience couldn't get enough of the Olympics, hungrily hunting down every detail on the characters playing out sports' most marvelously unscripted drama. The Olympics was a nightly epic story, in which Michael Phelps played the ideal leading man, with the mystery of his estranged father breaking the list of most clicked on stories of yahoo.com.

New Brat Pack -- Top 10 Rising Celebrity Searches

1. Miley Cyrus

2. Vanessa Anne Hudgens

3. Chris Brown

4. Jonas Brothers

5. Rihanna

6. Taylor Swift

7. Jamie Lynn Spears

8. Hayden Panettiere

9. Zac Efron

10. Selena Gomez

In 2008, tabloid staples cleaned up their acts due to court-ordered conservatorships (Britney Spears), pledges of sobriety (Lindsay Lohan), and motherhood (Nicole Richie). As a result, celebrity publications and bloggers shifted their focus to a new, younger set of headline makers, the New Brat Pack. Like their 1980s counterparts, the New Brat Pack celebs appear in each other's movies, music videos and social circles. They're all young (21 and under), popular and major money makers. And, their youth subjects them to greater public scrutiny.Disney proteges are coming into their own with huge success, including Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, the Jonas Brothers and Zac Efron.

Breaking The Glass Ceiling -- Top 10 Searched Influential Women

1. Angelina Jolie

2. Sarah Palin

3. Oprah

4. Hillary Clinton

5. Gina Carano

6. Tina Fey

7. Michelle Obama

8. Katie Couric

9. Barbara Walters

10. Dara Torres

Not only were Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton closer than ever to the nation's top elected offices, but many other women were popular among Yahoo! searchers this year. The presidential race fed into a huge rise in popularity for Tina Fey (portraying Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"), Michelle Obama (wife of the President-elect) and Katie Couric (political interviewer and newscaster). Undefeated kickboxing champ Gina Carano also upped her profile in her turn as Crush on "American Gladiators," then later made television history in the first primetime female fight.

Final Farewells -- Top 10 Send-Offs

1. Heath Ledger

2. Bernie Mac

3. Paul Newman

4. Randy Pausch

5. George Carlin

6. Estelle Getty

7. Tim Russert

8. Brad Renfro

9. Isaac Hayes

10. Boyd Coddington

2008 began with the unexpected death of actor Heath Ledger. Ledger's death launched the world into a stunned Search frenzy over the actor who showed promise of being a Hollywood great. His passing renewed searches for 25-year-oldBrad Renfro, a child actor who died in a heroin overdose a week earlier.

To find out more about the Yahoo! 2008 Year in Review go to yearinreview.yahoo.com or search for "2008 Year in Review" on yahoo.com.

About the Yahoo! 2008 Year in Review Methodology

To develop the Yahoo! Kirk & Spock Love briefs, Jason Chen. On the other, me* in my Darth Vader glow-in-the-dark underpants. And on the third side of this sci-fi menage a trois, the rest of the crew laughing at us. Then, in the middle, the Old Question that has pitted friend against friend, brother versus brother in bloody nerd combat for decades: Who would win in battle, a 642.5—meter long Galaxy-class Federation starship or a 1,600-meter long Imperial Star Destroyer?

Yey, I am up early today and today’s thanksgiving, time to celebrate and be thankful for everything that has happened including just the fact that you are alive.

I want to shout out to our current blogger Andrew, who has been helping me out while I am converting all the blogs in the network to “blog search engine”. Well, I will also have updated version of the Zedomax Search Engine Wordpress Theme available free of charge. (The current version has some bugs and I need to fix some CSS for IE6)

I am also planning a Pro-version of the Blog Search Engine Theme that not only includes the theme itself, I will include an E-book called, “Search“. Basically, it’s all the secrets that I didn’t put in the free theme that’s on the E-book.

Here’s some of the features included:

1. Ability for people to vote on blog posts like digg. (Simplified version)

2. Search engine features that can show your readers recent and popular searches.

3. SEO optimized blog that includes all the “right” plugins you need. (I’ve realized that a Wordpress blog is nothing without having the right plugins, similar to having a stock Nissan-Z versus a Nissan-Z equipped with high perfomance clutch, intake, turbo, etc…etc…)

4. How search-oriented blog theme will help you make more money and grow web traffic faster.

5. Okay, enough business, Happy Thanksgivin’!

Basically, this new E-book will have all the information you will need to build a blog search engine, all the plugins you need, including how to hire bloggers, explanation of how search-oriented people tend to click on ads more, AND the secrets behind Google’s marketing. I think I just figured out how to maximize your Adsense income, you can watch my video here. (But that’s just the tip of the iceburg, I’ve got so many ideas in my bag, THAT will be in the E-book and the Wordpress Theme I will be selling)

I figured I need to actually charge people for the good stuff, otherwise no one will care. That’s the only reason I am selling it, valued knowledge people can appreciate.

If anyone has any connections with major publishers, please send me an e-mail at zedomax [at] gmail.com since I am really planning to get this E-book published for real and have them available at your local Borders and Barnes & Noble.

Anyways, I am really tired this week and hopefully I will get all that blog search engine thang down by next week and get on the blogging-wagon again.

Brought to you by: Zedomax.com

There are still many gamers who have yet to upgrade to Windows Vista. Part of Windows Vista that was most appealing to gamers was DirectX 10 compatibility. DirectX 10 is something you can’t get on Windows XP.

According to AMD when Windows 7 hits market, widely believed to be mid-2009, DirectX 10.1 will be fully supported. According to AMD DirectX 10.1 will be used in the API for the Windows Desktop Manager in Windows 7.

Along with the use in the next generation Microsoft operating system, AMD claims that several games are coming that take advantage of DirectX 10.1. An example is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, which AMD says gets 10% higher frame rates on DirectX 10.1 versus DirectX 10. The writing between the lines is that many AMD video cards are DirectX 10.1 compatible whereas NVIDIA parts are not. This will mean NVIDIA owners need a new card to enjoy DirectX 10.1 benefits.
