Archos fan-site Archos Lounge lived up to its name this week and threw down a 300,000 page review on the new Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet. We won't tear down the whole thing here, but the primary takeaway seems to be mixed. Apparently the new processor on board really souped up the thing, but Archos skimped on the software, shipping what basically amounts to a buggy beta. That's no small criticism for Archos from its number one fans, so let's hope the company gets its act together fast. The review is in French, but there's an unboxing vid after the break, in that universal language of nerdery.
Continue reading Archos 5 series reviewed in French

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Research into the concrete-jet printer is being carried out by USC, and their technology can already build up complex concrete structures using technology that's half-CNC machine and half inkjet-like. They've just got funding from Caterpillar to further the research. Amazing stuff, especially when the team says it should be eventually be able to put together a 2,000-square-foot, two storey home in just a day, with all the wiring and plumbing automatically inserted too. Even NASA is interested, as this may be a good solution for building Moonbases. The only thing worse than getting a punctured tire is trying to use a flimsy scissor jack to change it. Break down on a dirt or snow-covered road and you probably have as good a shot at losing your hand as you do fixing a flat. Not so with the Titan, which may look like an exhaust-powered whoopee cushion, but can actually haul cars (even lifted rigs) up into the air on nearly any surface. Just run a hose to the exhaust of a running car, and the $120 (and up) balloon will gently raise the vehicle aloft -- and by "gently" we mean "really, really slowly." It's probably a little faster than calling AAA, but not as easy as Superjack's remote-controlled kit for lazies. If you have the patience, check out the vid after the break for six minutes of tire-changing action.

[Via Autoblog]
Continue reading Titan's air jack lifts your car with hot air, can't be used for a game of volleyball

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Following on “confirmed” reports that had the ballyhooed and highly-anticipated Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Windows Mobile smartphone delayed until possibly January of next year, Sony Ericsson has come out with a statement pointing towards a Q4 2008 delivery window for the XPERIA X1.

The company is rebuffing any claims that the next-generation high-end flagship will be pushed back until 2009. The Windows Mobile-powered Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 has been the talk of the town for too long, so it’s good to see Sony Ericsson essentially guaranteeing that we’ll be putting hands on the superphone before year’s end.

“There is absolutely no delay. The product is on track,” Sony Ericsson spokeswoman Merran Wrigley said. “We have said it will roll out in Q4 and we are on target to do that.”

HTC is responsible for the hardware behind the Swedish-Japanese joint venture’s latest flagship, which bodes well for Sony Ericsson’s fortunes. HTC turns anything they touch in to gold (Diamonds?) recently, and the XPERIA X1 should be no exception. Windows Mobile baubles aside, Sony Ericsson would do well to get their XPERIA X1 to market sooner rather than later. Attention spans in the mobile world are quite short.

Until that Q4 launch window rolls around, enjoy the new promotional vid of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.

Motorola Z10

Look! Hardware that breaks – on purpose! Shattered warranties aside, the Z10’s apparent bendy kick-slide design skews towards the flashy end of the spectrum, but hey, we’re not shallow. We care about what’s on the inside, too. But in the case of the Z10, after we took a good honest look at the interior, it turns out an innovative design is about the only thing this phone has going for it.

Though it’s billed as a “pocket-sized mobile studio,” this 4-ounce, platinum-trimmed phone is certainly no substitute for even a mediocre mini-camcorder (Exhibit A: the Flip Mino). So why drop $500 on the Z10 when you can get a 5MP camphone (Exhibit B: the Nokia N82) that shoots crisper stills and comparable vids? Beats us. Maybe it's the intuitive editing suite: the Z10’s storyboard feature let us cut together a montage of clips and pics with cinematic fades, circle dissolves, music and title cards in less than 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the OS wasn’t nearly as user-friendly. We literally had to break out the instruction manual just to send a Bluetooth pic (no joke).

Had Motorola spent even half as much time making the software as innovative as its break-away hardware, the Z10 would have wowed us. But with its lacking OS and underwhelming camera, the phone didn’t feel ready for primetime. —Steven Leckart

WIRED 30 fps vid clips don’t look too shabby. Quick, easy uploading to YouTube and Shozu. Storyboarding was a cinch. Camera shortcut button, plus auto-focus, great for snapping pics on the fly. Easy-to-access external microSD card slot is ready for 32GB.

TIRED 2.2-inch screen isn’t ideal for peeping videos. Only 3.2MP cam? (Tarantino wouldn’t settle for less than 5MP). Only a measly 1GB microSD included. Nav and Symbian UIQ more difficult to penetrate than Fort Knox. Curved slider makes lower keypad buttons harder to press.

I have this thing where I can't always watch videos on the Internet when they come my way — and not because I'm not allowed to at work, but because I don't feel like I can take the time to focus on just one video. Turns out "my thing" isn't so weird, because some kind soul made YouPlayer, a Firefox extension that lets you watch videos in your sidebar!

Once installed, all you have to do is drag and drop the URL or your search results for the video into the player.

With YouPlayer, not only can you multitask — i.e., checking email while a funny vid plays — you can also keep them in your sidebar to return to later, so you don't have to bookmark them or remember the site or YouTube search term when you get around to showing your friends later!

So I haven't had the chance to take EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 game for a test drive, but I guess people were complaining about a part in the game where Tiger walks on water to hit a golf ball onto the green — calling it out as a glitch. Turns out, EA Sports whips a vid to prove that Tiger can in fact conquer a 'Jesus Shot'.
