Retired subway cars make perfect studios for London artists

Young London artists looking for cheap studio space in an expensive city are turning their eyes toward subway cars — though those eyes would be looking up, not down. That's because these retired subway cars are actually on top of a warehouse-turned-art-gallery in Shoreditch, London, where they offer a sparse, multi-purpose space for artists who pay an oh-so-cheap $30 a month. Auro Foxcroft, the mind behind Village Underground, even got a sweet deal on the cars: £800 for four of them.

It's a novel idea, and one that breathes new life into what's essentially junk. Foxcroft plans to expand his Village Underground to other cities, including Berlin, Lisbon and Toronto. (Hey, what about New York?)

Mexico City most often conjures visuals involving a profusion of bright colors and bustling energy, possibly even tacky souvenirs or dice hanging from rear view mirrors. While her hometown's influence is mildly apparent in her work, Alejandra Laviada's photosculpture series of abandoned industrial objects stacked and set against the slate backdrop of Mexico City's abandoned factories is a sharp contrast to any preconception we may have had about the city with 19 million people.

With an incredible talent for composition of space and color, Alejandra takes ordinary warehouse items like giant drums or office chairs and piles them up, creating compelling sculptures and amazing feats in balance.

Alejandra finished her undergrad in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and carried on to complete a masters in photography from New York's School of Visual Arts. Mixing mediums is not the only objective in her work, as her recent series "Photo Sculptures" is "an attempt to record pieces of history that are simultaneously being erased and created" in Mexico City's ever-daunting struggle to revere the past while looking forward to the future. Like the work of husband-and-wife team Bernd and Hilla Becher, some of her work begins to look like a taxonomy of inanimate objects.

Her work is soon current display at the Palacio de Iturbide, an 18th-century mansion now restored and devoted to art exhibitions and educational events.

Samsung F480 Hugo Boss phone coming this Christmas

If Armani and Prada can have their own mobile phones, so can Hugo Boss. The Germany-based fashion company teamed up with Samsung for the special Hugo Boss-branded F480 handset. As you can see from the image above, the device looks super stylish and even comes with a pairing handset.

As for the specs, the Hugo Boss phone remains the F480 “inside,” sporting a 2.8-inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA support, Bluetooth and a whole lot more. User interface used is Samsung’s own TouchWiz, which we’ve no doubts will be Hugo Boss-branded, as well. Who knows maybe the two companies [Samsung and Hugo Boss] prepare some special fashion widget for the special edition handset.

Finally, you may want to know about the availability and pricing. The Hugo Boss Samsung phone should go on sale in Europe through Hugo Boss retail outlets in December. Additionally, PhoneHouse/Carphone warehouse will also sell the device for 479 EUR. Kinda steep, but we’re talking about a designer handset here, don’t forget that.

Whats your favourite colour on a Mobile device?

So it’s been a few year now since the somewhat iconic Moto RAZR V3 appeared on our shores, and then suddenly went pink – and a rainbow of other colours! The V3 brought to the fore something that had largely been lying dormant, and was barely experimented with – different colour swatches on Mobile devices!

Previously our world had been inhabited by dull greys, blacks, and the occasional coloured accent. There were prior devices to the V3 that sometimes used a bit of colour, but these were almost without exception pretty low-volume sellers.

Silver/Grey and Black have become the de-facto uniform of mobile devices, and now colouration of a particular device is either a sign of an Operator-“exclusive”, or the fact that a particular line of device is becoming tired.

Even worse is the trend to alter the hardware ID slightly, shift colour, and then re-package as a completely new device – which in most cases it isn’t. Sometimes manufacturers are even as cheeky as to add a minor new ‘feature’, and suggest this is the reason you should upgrade to this device!

Anyways, my rant makes me digress – what I was originally talking about was the lack of colour found in most mobile devices, normally adorning only ‘feature’ (gimmick?) phones. But is that a good thing?

My colour palette preference is Black, with Silver edging – so I’m quite well-served with the iPhone – but let’s hear from you guys (and gals) – what do you prefer, and why? My preferences are due to the fact I have several other pieces of tech with the same finish i.e. I value uniformity in my device army! But how about yourself?

Note: on the motorway I saw someone driving a pink Mini, which they had thoughtfully decorated with multiple pink interiors trim/gadget/’tack’ – and in the ear of the driver, a pink Bluetooth headset! What are the odds that her device was pink too?!

When a pro gadget writer needs a new phone, which one does he buy? Something packed with gizmos perhaps, a Nokia N96, or the bleeding-edge T-Mobile G1? Or, given that he uses a Mac and an iPod Touch, perhaps an iPhone?

Nope. I wanted something small, something that does absolutely nothing but make and receive calls and text messages. No camera, no MP3 player and no internet. Did I find it? Yes. Is it good? That's a little more complicated.

First, I want an iPhone. The ridiculous tariffs from Spain's Movistar mean that I won't be getting one for a while, so the next best thing was a do-nothing model to pair up with an iPod Touch. By chance, a friend came back from the UK with just the thing, the Vodafone 226, a branded Sagem handset. I bought it from him for €20 ($25).

One of the advantages of Vodadone UK is that the phones are sold unlocked, so you can pop in any SIM. Or they were the last time I bought a phone. Now they are as locked as any other carrier's handsets, which meant I had to get a new Pay as You Go SIM. The store, a local Phone House (the international name for the UK Carphone Warehouse) was out of stock, but offered me a bundled phone and card for €30, just €5 more than the SIM alone. It was the exact same model (in red not silver) so I figured that it would be worth it for the spare battery and charger.

There was one other reason for a new phone. Size. Here is the 226 alongside my old Sony Ericsson P900 (the dinosaur and lighter are there for scale):

So for size and looks, the new phone is perfect. But in use, how does it measure up? I'm a bit of a UI freak, so I expected to be disappointed, but as it turns out, the 226 acquits itself rather well. The lack of features makes the ones that it does have pretty easy to find. Text messaging via T9 is the same as most other phones, and a damn site better than any Motorola's and Siemens phones I have owned in the past.

But stripping off the features can have consequences. The only way to get numbers into the phone is by typing them in. No USB, no IR port and certainly no Bluetooth. The ringtones and wallpaper are also limited to what you get with the phone, but there is a standard old telephone sound, which does the job. The UI looks horrible, like a Windows PC circa 1988, but it works.

The one big oddity is in the selection of sounds for received text messages. There aren't any. Instead, you have to choose a regular ring tone which plays over and over for around 20 seconds. Crazy, and extremely annoying, this turns a discreet SMS into a clanging distraction.

The phone part, too, is awful. It's easy to make a call, but the speaker is so quiet that you hardly hear the caller. When you get to a quiet enough place, you discover that you still can't make out what the caller is saying. The sound is so muffled and soft that it makes it almost impossible for me to decipher people speaking Spanish or Catalan.

This is a shame, as the phone looks pretty sleek. It's thin, it is so light that you can't feel it in your pocket and the buttons, although very small, have a solid click to them. In conclusion, I set out to find a junk phone and that's exactly what I got. Two of them, in fact.

The shortcomings, although manifold, do not outweigh the convenience of the tiny package. I don't love it, but I certainly don't hate the thing, either. The constant publicity messages from Vodafone, though, are another matter entirely.

BlackBerry 8900 coming to the UK soon

BlackBerry 8900 from Carphone Warehouse

The Carphone Warehouse has just put the new BlackBerry Curve up on their “Coming Soon” site, undoubtedly to the excitement of many. So far, T-Mobile Germany is the only one who has publicly announced the BlackBerry 8900, but considering the Carphone Warehouse works with a bunch of carriers, including T-Mobile, it’s to be expected that they’d be offering this snazzy new device sooner or later. Rumours are also floating around that the 8900 will be lapping up on American shores in early 2009, and we can only presume that T-Mobile will continue to hold the exclusive. It’s a fine upgrade on the existing Curve series, featuring a 3.2 megapixel camera, 480 x 360 display, GPS, and Wi-Fi, but sadly no 3G. No pricing from Carphone Warehouse just yet, but the Curve should be out in December. Still looking for a Christmas present?
