The new watches use a hybrid LCD / LED display technology, which lets you choose a color on a whim. A set of color-changing LEDs is embedded underneath the LCD watch display, letting you cycle between blue, green, cyan, pink or yellow - whatever strikes your mood.

Nekura comes in two designs - Progression, featuring a circular clock face, and Scramble, featuring a bar-graph display. Both feature Tokyoflash’s typically cryptic displays, and a dramatic stainless steel watchband, engraved with a design that’s sort of reminiscent of a high-tech honeycomb.

[Microsoft TechFest 2008] Patrick Baudisch gave me a demo of the LucidTouch prototype that he is developing with his colleagues from Microsoft Research. Instead of the regular touch screen experience of the iPhone, the LucidTouch enables people to browse a map by touching the back of the device and seeing theirs fingers as a translucent overlay on top of the graphics that they are navigating. It prevents the fingers from occluding the graphic elements users are browsing, it would be useful for small screens.

The prototype (photo) is bulky and not very practical, the Web cam located on the back make it even worse, but we can imagine better designs for future mobile devices using this concept. According to Patrick, a possible application could be a watch that users could browse with one finger touch on the watchband on the other side of the wrist.

Leather bands are sold in a variety of end widths designated in inches or millimeters. Leather is flexible enough to interchange inches for millimeters. For example, you can use a 18mm width instead of 3/4 inch. The difference is only 1mm. If the strap is 1mm wider than the lug space, it will still fit fine. Any wider, however, and the strap will bulge in a short time.
