If you’ve ever been to a store that caters to mothers and newborns, you were probably overwhelmed at the selection. The number of bottle choices alone are staggering! One of the latest contenders is the accolade laden Adiri Natural Nurser. Designed by Whipsaw Inc. to simulate a mother’s breast and nipple using BPF FREE materials, it’s a baby bottle simplified in design but as it turns out may be better than the generic bottles flooding the market.

With the help of doctors and mothers, Whipsaw Inc. made the Adiri soft, safe and simple. It’s bottom loaded and dishwasher safe. The bottle is very grippy and tactile, not smooth like other bottles. The side is clearly labeled with volume markers and since the nipple is integrated into the bottle there’s only 2 pieces (aside from the cap).

I’m no mommy nor do I have any kids so outside of the usual product inspection, this was best reviewed by someone with a newborn. I lent the bottles (colors correspond to life stages) to my friend and her baby. Her main concerns were about nipples crumbling into small rubber baby might ingest, easy to clean and sanitize, and air swallowing.

After a month, she’s has mostly positive feedback; loves the bottom loading design because it makes it much easier to refill but grew to dislike it, more on that later. Loves the soft material and the nipple is still completely intact. Depending on who you ask, the general consensus is a bottle’s nipple design is extremely important because it determines how air-tight a baby’s latch is. Because the Adiri is shaped like a woman’s breast and nipple, the assumption is baby’s latch will be as air-tight as the real thing.

On to the cons. The bottom loading design tho convenient ends up being more trouble than traditional bottles. You have to place the cap on, invert and pour and pour fast because the nipple almost immediately beings to drip into the cap. After some trial and error we found out you have to correctly and squarely place the cap on to prevent dripping. The other thing she hates is not being able to use it with bottle warmers. The bottom is simply too thick to conduct heat well enough and the whole ordeal ends up take more time and hungry babies in waiting means more stress for mommy.

What we liked:

BPA-FREE

Soft natural squishy shape, really easy to handle

Super easy to clean being dishwasher safe

Nipple design and “Petal” design simulate a mother’s nipple and areola

Various colors to represent baby’s life stages

Great modern design

What could be improved:

Bottom loading causes dripping unless you place the cap squarely on

A complete set of 3 is $27, twice as much as other sets

Mothers are extremely picky about what their babies use and at the end of the day $27 means nothing if baby loves it. My friend has since switched from the Playtex Drop-In bottles to the Adiri. Bottle warming is still a chore but she’s managed to reschedule her routine so the bottle is able to sit on the warmer for much longer before feeding time. She loves the design but the main driving factor behind her decision was the bottle’s BPA-FREE source and easy to clean design. It’s much easier for water to enter from a wide opening at the bottom than a narrow one at the top. She whole-heartedly recommends the Adiri system.

What better way to show the world that you and your Land Rover SUV really do get down and dirty than with a rugged Land Rover-branded mobile phone? Following in the footsteps of fellow SUV-maker Hummer’s move to push their own-branded cellphones, Land Rover has apparently teamed up with Sonim to offer water-, temperature- and shock-resistant handsets starting next year.

The Sonim-made Land Rover S1 and Land Rover S2 G4 handsets are expected to hit the market next year in Land Rover’s bid to “compliment the lifestyle of the outdoor adventurer.” A third Land Rover handset should follow later next year.

In staying with Land Rover’s rough and tumble lifestyle brand, the Land Rover S1 and Land Rover S2 G4 feature ruggedized exteriors certified to withstanding temperature extremes (thermal shock), salt, fog, humidity, and even a 1.6-meter drop onto concrete. And, with Bluetooth connectivity, the new Land Rover handsets from Sonim can keep you connected wirelessly. The rest of the handsets’ feature set isn’t yet available.

Land Rover is looking to push their branded mobile phone offerings to “top operators, mobile retailers and consumers” in 40 countries around the world.

Full press release follows.

Partnership reinforces Sonim’s status as rising mobile carrier for rugged users

San Mateo, Calif., December 3, 2008 – Sonim Technologies announced today that it will embark on a partnership with Land Rover, which includes the launch of co-branded mobile phone products as well as an eco-friendly packaging. Land Rover, recognising adventurers’ desire for a full roster of mobile and durable products, engaged Sonim to become its licensing partner for a line of rugged cell phones that are designed to compliment the lifestyle of the outdoor adventurer.

Two co-branded phones will enter the market by mid-2009 - the Land Rover S1 by Sonim and Land Rover S2 G4 by Sonim. This will be followed later in the year by the launch of a third Land Rover phone. Sonim and Land Rover will co-market the phones to top operators, mobile retailers and consumers in a staggering 40 countries.

“In less than two years, Sonim has set the bar for engineering best-in-class rugged mobile phones for people who work and play in extreme environments,” said Bob Plaschke, Sonim’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are delighted to be partnering with Land Rover on this range of rugged mobile phones.”

“Land Rover recognises that our customers’ needs extend beyond the driver’s seat,” added Lindsay Weaver, Land Rover Global Licensing Manager. “Sonim and Land Rover are ideal partners in this effort, as both companies thrive on ingenuity, craftsmanship and durability.”

Land Rover and Sonim share a brand spirit: products fit for purpose. The Land Rover phones will be submersible, Bluetooth-compliant and certified to withstand salt, fog, humidity, transport and thermal shock and a 1.6-metre drop to concrete from any angle. To deliver further against Sonim and Land Rover’s distinctive marketplace proposition, the partners engaged iconic designer Scott Wilson, to develop the product lines.

As a natural extension of Sonim and Land Rover’s commitment to sustainability, the phones packaging forms a long-lasting re-useable rugged water resistant protective case. This is made from XENOY, a revolutionary post-consumer plastic derived mostly from used plastic bottles and film.

Bob Plaschke commented: “We are thrilled about the opportunity to further connect with global adventurers through our durable phones and our truly breakthrough form of packaging.”

Sonim Technologies knows how to make rugged handsets. The company has already released some pretty tough phones in the past, but now they have a few more models scheduled for a mid-2009 release. The newest additions are the Land Rover S1 and the Land Rover S2 G4. Both will come with a protective case made from XENOY, which is “a revolutionary post-consumer plastic derived mostly from used plastic bottles and film.”

The Land Rover range will of course feature water resistance and the ability to function in the hardest of environments, including 1.6 meter drops on something as unforgiving as concrete. No word on pricing, but you can expect to pay a premium when they’re available.

That the bloodshot yolks of your eyes in the morning and the pendulous sacks of grey flesh that underhang them are simply the cosmetic props of your plot to undermine their self-esteem. That there are more effective ways to harass and humiliate the oneiric — whether a hand dipped in a bowl of water or simply by covering them in millipedes as they sleep — never seems to occur to the snorer, It's enough to want to cure them of snoring the only surefire way: with a pillow.

The SnorePro is a device that attempts to supplant spousal smothering as the method of last resort for curing the chronic snorer. It has two primary functions. The first is that it measures your snoring and sends a mild electric shock every time it catches you somnambulently trying to suck the skin off your own face. But better: it actually records you when you snore, presumably proving once and for all that you actually have a problem.

If that works, it's great, but I've shared beds with girls who snored so much they spit up ceiling tiles the next morning, who still invariably denied that they would ever do anything so unladylike. I'm betting the electroshock treatment is the surer bet.

Now, you can actually steer the bastard.

The new kit—because it may look like a race car but let's be honest, it's a science edu-toy—still comes with the solar panel and hydrogen station so that you can use the sun's rays to convert H2O to H2 and O2. But the car itself now has glowing LEDs, responds to an IR remote, and runs longer and faster with the same amount of fuel. Taking a cue from auto makers and gas companies who release literally green advertisements to convince the public they aren't part of the problem, Horizon decided to change the car's translucent tint from blue to, yes, green. The difference, of course, is that Horizon definitely isn't part of the problem. Only time will tell, however, if they are part of the solution. Meantime, here's a fun Christmas gift for anyone that still has $120 to spend on progress! These days people are looking everywhere to find new, cheap, and plentiful sources of electricity, and while you wouldn't call it new, the ocean is certainly cheap and plentiful. Plentiful too are the people attempting to convert its motion into power by tapping its waves or extracting its heat. But what about lesser waters moving at a leisurely 3 knots? Those lazy flows make up the majority of all currents and are exactly the target of VIVACE, a series of tubes (seriously) that relies on vortex induced vibrations (the VIV) to create clean aquatic energy (the, uh, ACE). The idea is that the cylindrical shapes create turbulence in slow-moving water, oscillating up and down in electricity-generating ways. It's all the brainchild of Michael Bernitsas, a professor at the University of Michigan, and is partly funded by the US Department of Energy -- your tax dollars at work, you eco-pioneer you.

[Via inhabitat]
Sonim Technologies is no stranger when it comes to rugged handsets - the company has already released some pretty hardy phones in the past, and this time round they have lined up a couple more models for a mid-2009 release. The newest additions will be known as the Land Rover S1 and the Land Rover S2 G4, and both will come with a protective case made from XENOY, best described as “a revolutionary post-consumer plastic derived mostly from used plastic bottles and film.” Needless to say, the new Land Rover range will stay true to its predecessors' roots, boasting water resistance as well as the ability to function in the harshest of environments, including 1.6 meter drops to concrete. There is no word on pricing as at press time, but do expect to fork out more than normal when they're available.
