Times are tough. With the global economy teetering on the brink of disaster, everyone is looking to pinch as many pennies as they can get their hands on. Major national wireless carriers are no exception.

Verizon Wireless, the No. 2 wireless carrier in the US, has announced that they will start charging content vendors a cool 3 cents for every MT (mobile terminated) message that gets pushed through Verizon’s network on its way to customers’ handsets. MT traffic usually includes text message responses to search queries, text alerts (news, sports, stocks, etc.), and interactive voting notifications. Starting November 1, Verizon will be banking 3 cents for every MT message sent to Verizon customers - the new fee will be charged in addition to the fees that MT vendors already pay. All MT vendors will be subject to the fee increase, with the exception of free-to-end-user campaigns (where the sender assumes all costs associated with sending text messages), non-profit organizations, and mobile donation programs.

The move is apparently aimed at recouping overhead costs associated with delivering text-based content to customers. “Just like any business, we reassess our charges to make sure they align with our costs for providing the service and sometimes it becomes necessary to make adjustments,” Verizon Wireless representative Brenda Raney said. “In this instance, this is the first increase the company has implemented since the service began in 2003.”

Verizon’s decision to levy an additional fee on MT vendors could set a precedent that might just put increasing pressure on the booming MT business. Vendors like cellphone coupon startup Cellfire and SMS-search service ChaCha are most affected, but even political campaigns like Obama’s text-message campaign could feel the pinch.

It’s just too bad that the additional MT fee won’t stop SMS text message spam. Way to go Verizon.

La Fonera fans, it's finally time to celebrate. Iteration 2.0, which is fittingly dubbed the Liberator, is at long last ready for shipment... to developers, at least. The La Fonera 2.0 box will certainly look familiar to owners of the first, with just 1,000 of these being prepped for consumers in France, Germany and Spain. The intention here is for devs to start toying around and "programming their own applications for other Foneros out there." More specifically, the creators are hoping that more USB functionality will be worked in so we'll eventually have Fonera WiFi boxes that play nice with USB hard drives, printers, scanners, webcams and all manners of cooling devices. It's available now (for a limited time, obviously) for €39.95 ($53) if you're up to the challenge. Oh, and if you design an application sweet enough for the Fonera 2.0, you'll be reimbursed the purchase price -- not bad, eh?

[Via WiFi Romania]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chinese company TechFaith Wireless Communication Technology will begin commercial production of mobile devices that are running Android in early 2009.

At the moment details are sketchy, to say the least, but we do know the prototype unit is “in general” completed. Apparently, we’ll have more details — including the form factor and the partner company — during November. And that’s about all we know at present.

In the meantime, I can only add that TechFaith works with such mobile companies as Motorola, LG, Amoi, CECT, France Telecom, SK Telecom, Sprint and Bird. Can’t wait to hear more about this…

T-Mobile Deploys Nuance Mobile Care Solution to Deliver Improved Customer Experience, Operational Excellence in Customer Self-Care

BURLINGTON, MA, – Nuance Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN) announced that T-Mobile USA, one of the fastest growing providers of wireless voice and data services, is deploying Nuance’s Mobile Care solution on select T-Mobile handsets.

The new application will enable T-Mobile to provide its customers with a more intuitive, user-friendly experience, allowing them to automatically resolve common problems. T-Mobile customers can now address such issues as diagnosing and repairing configuration problems, along with making account and billing inquiries – all on their mobile phones. Pilots and trials in both the U.S. and Europe have proven customers’ preference for on-device self-service.

“T-Mobile works toward delivering exceptional service to every customer, every day,” said Warren McNeel, vice president of product development at T-Mobile USA. “Nuance Mobile Care gives us the ability to provide a superior customer service experience and offers our customers an easy way to learn about and use advanced services, right from the screen of their phone.”

“The growing complexity in devices and data service technologies has made it challenging for wireless operator customer support and made it more difficult for subscribers to discover beneficial services,” said J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D., vice president and chief analyst, Mobile & Wireless Communications at Frost & Sullivan. “Nuance Mobile Care represents an excellent solution for T-Mobile that enables their customers to solve – right on the device - many of the common problems they encounter, from checking their account balance and paying bills to upgrading their data plans and setting up email.”

“T-Mobile is known for its great service, which reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of their customers.” said Mikael Berner, vice president and general manager for Nuance Mobile Care. “With our Mobile Care solution, the bar has been raised for quality customer service, helping companies reach the next plateau in customer satisfaction. Devices can now solve problems and answer questions more quickly and easily than ever before.”

Nuance Mobile Care solutions can be embedded on a customer’s mobile device over-the-air (OTA) or installed by the manufacturer. The interactive experiences, such as paying a bill, new feature tutorials or relevant service discovery can be created by the operators and pushed OTA to any device that supports Nuance Mobile Care. The product suite enables the delivery of interactive promotions, the resolution of most customer support problems, and allows operators to deliver a branded service experience to their subscribers.

About T-Mobile USA
Based in Bellevue, WA, T-Mobile USA, Inc. is the U.S. operation of Deutsche Telekom AG’s Mobile Communications Business, and a wholly owned subsidiary of T-Mobile International, one of the world’s leading companies in mobile communications. By the end of the second quarter of 2008, 125 million mobile customers were served by the mobile communication segments of the Deutsche Telekom group — 31.5 million by T-Mobile USA — all via a common technology platform based on GSM, the world’s most widely used digital wireless standard. T-Mobile’s innovative wireless products and services help empower people to connect to those who matter most. Multiple independent research studies continue to rank T-Mobile among the highest in numerous regions throughout the U.S. in wireless customer care and call quality.

Samsung JACK i616 in Merlot color is now available through Rogers Wireless. The strange thing, though, is that the device on the website has Fido branding. Ok, we know Rogers is the owner of Fido, but why on earth they used the image of the device with Fido’s logo is beyond me. It’s not a big mistake, if it’s a mistake at all on their part, it’s just… strange.

Anyway, now when the JACK is Windows Mobile 6.1 compliant, Rogers will ship the smartphone with the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile OS. The price is $24.99 on a way-too-long 3-year plan… Here’s a link to the Rogers’ website where you can get all the details.

Well, I’ve always wanted to make this site that would shorten your affiliate links and finally did it today so check it out, it’s called CozyURL.com:

Well, here’s another site called CozyURL.com I made today in about 2 hours while chatting on G-mail with Josh.

I didn’t add any graphics so it’s fast and you can easily access it from mobile devices too.

It’s basically a site that will shorten URLs like http://sdfkcs.com/jdsf923jfdsaf to http://CozyURL/120.

It’s a free site and your link will permanently remain so please knock yourself out the next time you need to shorten that long GoogleMaps URL, or simply want to remember one number for viewing the site on your mobile phone.

I might open-source the code since some of you might like to make your own, so leave a comment if you want it.
