So, to all the morons, please stop writing and watch the LHC start up on September 10th using the real-time CERN video broadcast.

And by the way, there's still a chance that one day an asteroid like the one in the video hits Earth, as it has happened six times before. So our advice still applies: don't do your homework, have sex, and love everyone. Except these bozos:

The clueless type

hello here,
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the worlds largest particle accelerator complex. which will replicate the beginning of a galaxy. in other words something like the big bang theory, the first attempt to use it is scheduled for september, 10, 2008 or this wednesday. i dont know much about it but if it works it will be the single greatest discovery of man kind. answering such questions like "how did we get here?" or "how did it all start?" also time travel and alternate dimensions come into question. But if it fails it could become a black hole and we'll all die. i just heard this from a friend today and was wondering if you guys knew anything about it. i did some research of my own but im still confused was hoping for a dumbed up version. also i'm a new gizmodo member and would like to be allowed to comment. thanx

Man, you are already banned and you haven't even been approved.

The psychopath type

con-artist fascist net-nazi bbc.co.uk and con-artist mccain/obama/bush do absolutely nothing to defend the u.s. constitution, ergo; if the LHC is allowed to go online, you have failed at defending the constitution or world safety ya clown porn con-artists (if the shoe fits)...the bbc fails to list all the hidden/missing variables in regards to LHC operations..thier "world service" is a "world dis-serice" via dis-informing the public of potential dangers and frauds involved...I will from this date forward add the BBC as complicit in the cern-lhc and affilates decades worth of frauds as I have done with obama/mccain, scott morely, frank wilczek and robert jaffe (to name a few) of clown porn fktard con-artist artist MIT as well as marjorie con-artist shapiro of berkeley, ken bloom of UNL, arkani ahmed of harvard and conan obrien for featuring con artist robert fisher of MIT who works at the atlas detector, ergo; unsolicited comunication of LHC safety...

I hope the FBI is tracking this dude, because I looks like the kind of guy that can kill people at random. In 1991, CEC introduced the TL1, the first product to use a belt drive CD mechanism. All over the world, audiophiles and music lovers took note and gave the product an enthusiastic reception. Never before had such a wealth of detailed musical information been extracted from compact disc. And now, CEC presents the TL1N with a latest DA converter, incorporating sophisticated belt-drive technologies. In order to faithfully read the music signal recorded on disc, an extremely quiet drive mechanism, which can precisely stabilize the disc rotation and eliminate vibration and resonance, is essential. In the TL1N, the spindle motor, which drives the disc, is completely isolated from the disc turntable. Any vibration or electromagnetic noise arising from the motor are either shut out or absorbed by the rubber belt.

CEC TL1N achieves pickup performance that can read the music signal recorded on disc with the highest stability and lowest noise. The elegant, stylish CEC TL1N will be available in Japan from September 20 for approximately 766,500 yen ($7,085).

GeoEye-1, the world's highest-resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite, was launched into space from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Weighing about 1957 kg GeoEye-1 was launched at 11:50 a.m. PDT (1850 GMT) on a Delta 2 rocket. GeoEye's ground station in Norway relayed the downlink signal it received from GeoEye-1 confirming that the satellite successfully separated from the second stage of the launch vehicle and began automatically initializing its onboard systems. GeoEye-1 will now undergo a calibration and check-out period before imagery products will be available for sale.

GeoEye-1 will simultaneously collect 0.41-meter ground resolution black-and-white (panchromatic) images and 1.65-meter color (multispectral) images. Designed to take digital images of the Earth from 681 km and moving at a speed of about seven km per second, the satellite camera can distinguish objects on the Earth's surface as small as 0.41-meter in size.

Check out this fantastic hack. A few hackers at acidmods.com have managed to get the PSP and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Chatpad typing. Check out the video for the full low down.

There are still a few kinks to smooth out, but the hard part seems over, with l0rdnic0 managing a tiny bit of soldiering using a PSP remote cable and some software from the Open Keyboard Project.

Here’s some of the tech specs about the mod, courtesy of l0rdnic0 himself:

My PSP’s are running CFW 4.01 M33-2, a special version of piKey and a custom flash on the Chatpad. Text input is a breeze and it works with the Sony OSK (on screen keyboard) and the Danzeff OSK under AFKIM. It does not work with PSPWrite and other ZX-81 applications because they are not compiled to do so but Jean is working on a compatible drive to make them work natively.

Yes, you do. Honest. Logitech thinks it's a good idea, anyway, and is due to spring a few things like speaker docks, FM transmitters and sound recorders bearing the compatibility logo in October. And clearly Sony thinks it's a good idea. Whether it shakes up the MP3 player market enough to disturb that other brand with its own "Made for..." scheme is another thing altogether.
Here's an image of an upcoming Dell mouse, featuring a sensor that reads "LaserStream Technology". Just in case that sounds a wee bit familiar to those who are more well-versed with the hardware world, it is a trademark used by Agilent Technologies - the very same company that disposed off its laser technology to Swiss company Logitech. This sensor looks pretty much the same as those found in the Logitech G-series, so that would mean a maxed out DPI of 2,000. Well, the mouse doesn't really look as though it will win any prizes in the aesthetics department, but hey - as long as it functions all right, I'm down with it.

By Karsten Lemm

On a day in late August, 1998, two Stanford Phd. students managed to make $100,000 with a few mouse clicks by showing their new search technology to Cisco co-founder Andy von Bechtolsheim. The seasoned Silicon Valley executive was so taken with what he saw that he dashed to his Porsche, pulled his check book from the glove compartment and wrote check number 4642 in the name of a company that did not yet exist: Google, Inc.

The two students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, officially founded their start-up on September 7, 1998. Ten years later, the little search engine that could has become one of the most prominent players on the Internet, dominating its industry like few other companies anywhere. In the U.S., according to comScore, Google enjoys a search market share of over 60 percent – three times as much as its closest competitor, Yahoo. In some countries, like Portugal, Finland and Spain, Google servers handle more than 9 search queries out of 10. Financial success has been equally impressive, with annual sales skyrocketing from a mere $1.5 billion in 2003 to $16.6 billion last year.

As Google is celebrating its tenth birthday, now a company of almost 20,000 people, branching out into ever more services to become a part of every aspect of our digital lives, Ubergizmo is looking back at one of the first interviews the founders ever gave. Back in January of 1999, Ubergizmo contributor Karsten Lemm, a correspondent for the German newsmagazine Stern, knocked on the door of an apartment house in Menlo Park to interview Brin and Page for an article about Silicon Valley and its start-up culture. Next to the doorbell, a sign caught his eyes. In handwritten letters it said, “Google World Headquarters”. Inside, a handful of twenty-somethings were working on their PCs – mostly in the kitchen. The garage, Silicon Valley’s perennial symbol of entrepreneurship, was overflowing with mountain bikes, knick-knack, and empty computer boxes.

In-between low-level programming, schmoozing their investors, and taking out the garbage, the Google founders took some time out to talk about providing a service to the world, making money with helpful advertising, and wanting to be on par with Yahoo and Amazon. What follows are edited excerpts of their conversation with Karsten, who stopped smiling about the grandiose sign by the doorbell years ago.
