Nokia Siemens Networks is the clear market leader in the WDM ((Wavelength Division Multiplexing) deployment of 40 Gigabit per second (40G), according to the new Ovum report “Global 40G/100G market update”*. With a market share of 35 percent, the company is a full 12 percentage points ahead of the nearest competitor.

Nokia Siemens Networks pioneered 40G in both research and implementation. The company started 40G research in the 1990’s and over the past decade has delivered an impressive list of trials which were all industry firsts. It also was the first vendor to undertake a mass roll-out of optical 40G technology as early as 2006. Ovum finds that Nokia Siemens Networks is now reaping the rewards for the early start in the technology.

“Success in optical networking is heavily tied to a company’s engineering expertise as well as depth of experience. At Nokia Siemens Networks we have both as for more than 25 years we have been developing and implementing optical transmission networks. This clearly pays off for our customers,” explains Uwe Fischer, head of Nokia Siemens Networks’ DWDM business line.

The market for optical communication in the 40G field will be ready for mass deployment in 2009, Ovum predicts, and expected to reach a total volume of 600 million Dollars. The analyst project that by 2013 this market is expected to almost triple.

Nokia Siemens Networks is in an excellent position to head the 40G deployment race long-term. The company has played a strategic role and been a key implementer in the largest commercial deployment of 40G lines/capacity.

“Making a solution appealing to carriers requires more than reliability and performance. The whole application cycle has to be considered and that means everything from usability to documentation and support has to be assured,” adds Uwe Fischer. “The current deployment of 40G gives us the experience to lay a solid foundation for the future of optical deployments.” The conclusion from Ovum seems to back this up: “Vendors who have been working on 40G will have an advantage over those that skipped (40G) and went right to 100G.”

*Global 40/100G market update by Ronald Kline (November 2008)

About Nokia Siemens Networks
Nokia Siemens Networks is a leading global enabler of communications services. The company provides a complete, well-balanced product portfolio of mobile and fixed network infrastructure solutions and addresses the growing demand for services with 20,000 service professionals worldwide. Nokia Siemens Networks is one of the largest telecommunications infrastructure companies with operations in 150 countries.
KPN International has completed phase one of the upgrade to 40 Gbit/s across its European fiber network. The Paris - London - Amsterdam links can now run at these high speeds, with other key European destinations scheduled for completion this quarter.

As part of its drive to provide next generation network services to carriers, service providers and corporate users, KPN International is moving ahead with this upgrade to 40 Gbit/s. Customer demand for bandwidth and performance have driven this development, and with the upgrade KPN International has been able to quadruple performance.

KPN International has achieved these new service and performance levels through the widespread adoption of new Optical Transport Network (OTN) technologies from technology partner Huawei.

The new solution has been exhaustively tested over recent months. This testing culminated in a London launch event at which KPN International wholesale and Huawei customers were invited to test drive the next generation network.

Carolien Nijhuis, Managing Director of KPN International, explains the business logic for this significant upgrade: 'As data, video and voice use continue to grow for both wholesale and corporate customers, there is no limit in sight for capacity or performance. As network owners, we need to distinguish ourselves both by being ready for demand and by being flexible in our response.'

To achieve these new un-regenerated 40 Gbit/s links, KPN International capitalises on its stake in the 208 km Ulysses sea cable between the Netherlands and the UK.

Fan Miao, Managing Director of Huawei in the Netherlands, sees the KPN International 40 Gbit/s network as a showcase initiative: 'We have worked together to create a solution of outstanding flexibility. This will allow KPN International to route and balance traffic more effectively than ever before. We should also mention the environmental intelligence of the solution, which radically drives down the cost and impact of power consumption.'

The Paris – London - Amsterdam link is now fully functioning and highly-resilient at 40 Gbit/s, and initial client interest has been high. KPN International intends to extend the next generation service across its key business hubs in its pan-European network by the close of 2008.

About KPN

KPN is a leading international telecommunications and ICT service provider, offering wireline and wireless telephony, internet and TV to consumers and end-to-end telecom and ICT services to business customers. The international KPN data and IP services are made possible by an extensive, high-capacity fibre-optic network that extends to 22 European countries, plus worldwide connections to 180 countries. KPN' s subsidiary Getronics operates a global ICT services company with a market leading position in the Benelux, offering end-to-end solutions in infrastructure and network-related IT. In Germany and Belgium, KPN pursues a multi-brand strategy in its mobile operations and holds number three market positions through E-Plus and BASE. KPN provides wholesale network services to third parties and operates an efficient IP-based infrastructure with global scale in international wholesale through iBasis.

At 30 September 2008, KPN served over 37 million customers, of which 29.8 million in wireless services, 4.0 million in wireline voice, 2.5 million in broadband Internet and 0.7 million in TV. With 25,323 FTEs (38,919 FTEs including Getronics), KPN posted revenues of EUR 10.9bn and an EBITDA of EUR 3.8bn in the period January – September 2008. KPN was incorporated in 1989 and is listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

For more information, visit www.kpn.com/international

In line with the increasing trend of sending text messages, we have developed a unique SMS promotion that allows our customers to interact on a global scale in a more straightforward and uncomplicated manner,” says Lycamobile’s CEO Milind Kangle.

Lycamobile’s free text message deal offers users unlimited opportunities that can range from getting your Christmas party started via free SMS invitations to sending seasonal SMS-powered greetings rather than spending extra money on extravagant cards and international postage fees.
As well as sending free text messages to any country, new Lycamobile customers get an extra £2 credit on registration and all customers get an additional £10 worth of calls on £20 top-up vouchers. Top-up vouchers can also be purchased online at www.lycamobile.co.uk.
On top of its seasonal rates Lycamobile always offers cut-price national tariffs, with calls to UK landlines costing 8p per minute while calls to UK mobiles are 10p per minute. Calls made between Lycamobile customers are even less at 0p per minute plus a one-off connection charge
“Why not give the gift of free worldwide text messages and bargain rate calls to your family, friends and colleagues? Our compactly-sized Pay As You Go SIM card makes an ideal stocking filler and secret Santa gift,” adds Kangle.

I'm not sure how much a PAYG simcard from Lyca Mobile will cost but I know that Tesco sell them, so why not get over there and see what this is all about.

For the sake of a £20 top up to take part in this offer it makes me think "where's the catch", but in all honesty there is none.

Fantastic offer folks, I'm off to get myself a simcard.

Posted by: John

Post Tags: lyca mobile,press release,free sms,free simcard,christmas countdown,tracyandmatt.co.uk

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Gartner's latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we'd say it's a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We're also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be hacking its iPhone production some 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we're told that "for the first time (meaning in this quarter), iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America," and beyond that, "open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile's licensing model in the short-term." Need we really reiterate how badly WinMo 7 is needed?

Smartphone numbers are in: iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 09:01:00 EST.

MySpace, the world’s premier social network, and RipCode, an innovator of Internet and mobile video infrastructure solutions, announced today that MySpace Mobile users across the globe will now be able to enjoy MySpace video content from their video enabled mobile devices. The first social portal to launch video streaming for mobile, MySpace’s beta mobile video initiative is committed to ensuring the best user experience by providing the highest quality video for mobile viewing. Users will now be able to view videos they’ve uploaded or have marked as a favorite.

The MySpace Mobile site receives approximately three billion worldwide page views per month from more than 10 million monthly unique users. Combining the popularity of the MySpace mobile site with its vast online video library creates a compelling and dynamic mobile environment.

In order to meet ever-increasing video demand, MySpace utilizes RipCode’s On-Demand Video Transcoding technology to optimize mobile video delivery and give users an improved mobile video experience. Real time transcoding enables MySpace to easily support several different handsets even though they require different combinations of codecs, bit rates, and resolutions. For MySpace Mobile users,100 percent their video content is now available on mobile devices. Because MySpace is transcoding video on-demand, there is no longer need to store the entire MySpace video library in multiple mobile formats, thus saving significant hardware, energy and storage resources.

According to Frost & Sullivan, streaming mobile video services constitute the bulk of current U.S. mobile video service offerings. The MySpace mobile video service will be rolled out in beta globally, with support for the most popular streaming-enabled mobile devices. MySpace will continue to rapidly add support for more streaming-enabled devices.

Accessing and viewing video from mobile devices is a data intensive service. MySpace mobile users are advised to consult their mobile data plan to avoid excessive fees. MySpace mobile video quality, as with all mobile services, is dependent on individual device capabilities as well as network speed and connection.

The once almost unstoppable growth in mobile device shipments and revenues is coming to a screeching halt as wireless subscribers around the globe extend the life cycles of their existing devices in response to difficult economic conditions, according to iSuppli.

In the third quarter of 2008, the mobile device market contracted slightly, ending with 316.7 million units, down 1.1% from 320.4 million in the second quarter, iSuppli reported. Handsets, which account for the vast majority of this segment, will achieve shipments of 311 million units in the third quarter of 2008, down 0.3% from 312 million in the second quarter.

A check in the channel shows that manufacturers are being conservative in their sourcing and component procurement activities, and they are making efforts to reduce inventory to maintain lean and efficient operations.

iSuppli has lowered its forecast of global mobile device shipment growth to 8.9% in 2008, down from 10.4%, which will end the year at 1.29 billion units.

"The outlook for 2009 is even more gloomy than for 2008," observed Tina Teng, senior analyst of wireless communications for iSuppli. "With the United States, Europe and Japan entering recessions, economic uncertainty and waves of layoffs mean that consumers are likely to spend less on mobile products."

Shipments in 2009 are expected to decline by 5.6% to 1.22 billion units.

With more than three billion subscribers worldwide, the growth of the mobile device market has been driven by upgrade purchases of existing customers, Teng noted.

"While new subscriber additions are continuing at a healthy pace and are poised to grow by 563.9 million in 2008 and by 506.5 million in 2009, an overwhelming majority of the new subscribers are coming from the rural areas of emerging regions," Teng said. "These subscribers primarily are purchasers of low-cost, entry-level handsets. However, the pricier feature phone and smartphone market segments are driven by existing subscribers who are upgrading their mobile devices to take advantage of new features and advanced data services. As the economic climate deteriorates, these customers are delaying their purchases."

With the penetration of handsets in emerging markets rising rapidly during the past few years, upgrades have grown to account for more than 50% of total mobile device shipments in 2008. Because of this, mobile device shipment growth has become more sensitive to the upgrade cycle.

If the replacement cycle extends by 4.7 months, the mobile device market contraction will commence. If only 16% of 2008 subscribers upgrade to a new device in 2009, it will translate into a replacement cycle extension of 19 months. Under these circumstances, the outcome will be that mobile device shipment volume will be reduced to 1.3 billion units in 2008 and to 1.1 billion units in 2009, with a market contraction of 12% in 2009.

However, at this time, iSuppli is not going that far, revising its 2009 mobile device forecast-including both handsets and external modems-to 1.2 billion units, down from 1.4 billion previously, with handsets accounting for nearly all shipments in 2009. iSuppli estimates that in the mobile device market, the replacement cycle will extend by 10.7 months in 2009 with a replacement rate of 18.1%.

Based on iSuppli's preliminary estimate, on top of the average selling price (ASP) erosion and higher mix of entry-level handsets in mobile devices, it is likely industry revenue will suffer a 10.7% decline in 2009.

iSuppli believes that mobile device shipments in 2009 will contract by 5.6%. By the end of 2010, the mobile device market should show signs of a revival with a year-on-year growth rate of 3.1%.

Despite the economic meltdown and the rising unemployment rate, India will have added nine million new wireless subscribers per month in 2008 and China's subscriber base will have expanded at a rate of seven million new subscribers annually. First-time buyers in the emerging market are still going strong and will represent 42% of the mobile device market in 2009.
