Garmin wants to get the word out that they have a nuMap - New Map guarantee, which means that if you register your Nuvi or Zumo and within 60 days of your purchase there is a new map update, you get that map update for free. Not bad, but considering that there is only an annual map release, this will only hit a small portion of buyers.

Full Press release follows and states that this is effective for people who bought their Nuvi or Zumo after August 17, 2008, and the program starts tomorrow, October 15, 2008. Garmin says:

"After a customer purchases a new nüvi or zūmo PND, they can check to see if they are eligible for a free map update simply by registering their unit at http://my.garmin.com within 60 days of the first use of their new PND. If new map data is available anytime during that 60-day period, the user can request and download the new data, free of charge, by following simple online prompts."

So make sure that you register your Nuvi or Zumo, and then check online to see if you qualify for a free map update.

Register at the My Garmin Website

Full Press Release after the jump.....

Buy With Confidence: Garmin® Offers nüMaps Guarantee™
New nüvi, zumo customers eligible for free map update within 60 days of new device activation

OLATHE, Kan./August 27, 2008/Business Wire--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today its nüMaps Guarantee, which will ensure that new owners of select Garmin personal navigation devices (PNDs) receive the most updated map available.

"Garmin strives to make sure that our customers have the most current and up-to-date maps. As roads and points of interest change, we work closely with our map provider, NAVTEQ, to continually update our databases," said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales. "Now, when a customer starts using their new Garmin, they can be assured that their unit will have access to the latest version of road maps."

"We're pleased with Garmin's efforts to make the freshest, most accurate map data available to its customers," commented Cliff Fox, Senior Vice President, Map Division at NAVTEQ. "Our research indicates that portable navigation device users are more satisfied with their systems when the map data is up-to-date."

After a customer purchases a new nüvi or zūmo PND, they can check to see if they are eligible for a free map update simply by registering their unit at http://my.garmin.com within 60 days of the first use of their new PND. If new map data is available anytime during that 60-day period, the user can request and download the new data, free of charge, by following simple online prompts.

The nüMaps Guarantee program will begin on October 15, 2008. Anyone who first used their new nüvi or zūmo PND on August 17th or later will be eligible for a free map update - provided their unit is registered with Garmin and a new map is available within 60 days of the unit's first use.

Motorola Q11 - notice the indicator lights along the left-side of the display

While we’re not sure if the Motorola Q11 will help Motorola drag itself out of the hole that it’s dug for itself over the past couple years, the evolutionary successor to the Motorola Q9 is definitely worth a mention. The Motorola Q11 has been popping up here and there lately, and it’s finally been caught on video by our friends at Zumo!

With a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and quad-band GSM/EDGE radio, the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard-powered Motorola Q11 is apparently being aimed at the younger demographic. We have confirmation that the Motorola Q11 rocks a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, making it that much easier to listen to your favorite tunes on-the-go. There’s also a microSDHC card slot that comes stuffed with a 1GB microSD card, courtesy Microsoft - the microSD card slot can support up to 32GB microSDHC cards for uber storage expandability. And, with an MSN Messenger client integrated into the Motorola Q11, we can definitely see the Motorola Q11 capturing a substantial market-base among its Q-loving constituents.

Notice that the Motorola Q11’s display is slightly offset from center. Aside from looking a bit awkward, the display’s rightward-bias makes room for some indicator lights adorning the left-most edge of the display bezel. If you look closely, you might be able to make out the GPS-lock and (presumably) the Bluetooth icon that seem to light up from beneath the display bezel.

The Motorola Q11 isn’t exactly the innovative leap forward that Motorola needed to bring to the table to save their struggling handset business. But, with a decent feature-set and a muted, yet attractive, design refresh, the Motorola Q11 will likely win over the hearts and minds of at least some customers when it launches sometime before the end of 2008.

With the IFA show in Berlin going on the last week in August, the month really woke up with announcements coming from numerous GPS makers. The trade show is set just before the holidays and usually sees introductions that are headed for the shelves to catch some of that holiday cheer. The show saw a Euro only Connected TomTom (740 and 940 LIVE), while Garmin introduced extensions to their Nuvi 200 and 700 series by improving the product offerings and adding lifetime traffic capabilities (no subscription required).

This month I also reviewed the Garmin Oregon 400t handheld GPS after using it for several weeks, as well as the new TomTom ONE 130/130S and 330/330S XL units.

What is this, unofficial ‘biker day’ here at OhGizmo? Last week Garmin revealed their new zumo 550 GPS unit and the announcement was timed to coincide with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally which makes sense given the new device is specifically designed for use on bikes. As a result the zumo 550 is not only vibration tested, UV-resistant, waterproof and built with fuel-resistant plastics, but also features a glove-friendly touchscreen display which is readable even in direct sunlight. Other biker-friendly features include a motorcycle console screen which includes easy-to-read trip information and a fuel gauge that will warn you when it’s time to fill up, as well as custom ‘caps’ that come in a variety of colors allowing you to match the color of the zumo to your ride.

It includes Garmin’s City Navigator NT street maps software with a “hefty” POI database including motels, restaurants, gas stations and ATMs. You can also add your own custom POIs for things like school zones and “safety cameras” as the Garmin website puts it. (cough, speed traps, cough) An optional XM radio antenna gives you weather, traffic and of course satellite radio, while built-in bluetooth allows you to make calls via the zumo or hear turn-by-turn directions delivered directly to a BT headset or helmet. Compared to other GPS devices on the market, the zumo 550’s $964.27 price tag is a bit steep, but you have to remember that this thing is specifically built to survive the elements.

As you can see it has the exact form factor as zumo 450 and zumo 550. The only difference is the darker color and the Harley Davidson logo near the top.

This is a special garmin zumo customized for Harley Davidson. The preloaded map contains all the listings of Harley Davidson stores in the country and there’s also the new feature on harley-davidson.com where it allows all those ‘born to be wild’ types to plan their road trip in advances. You can also share your routes using the SD card slot.

Road Tech zūmo’s glove-friendly design with left-handed controls and oversized touchscreen buttons. The waterproof (IEC 529 IPX-7 standards) device comes ready to go right out of the box…

With optional XM subscriptions and an XM antenna, you can check the weather, move ahead of traffic and listen to the radio when you travel with Road Tech zūmo in the U.S. As an alternative, zūmo can receive optional TMC traffic alerts (in select cities) when used with a compatible traffic receiver.

Other must have feature for motorcyclists is the ability to hear directions and make phone calls with your helmet on. Thanks to the added bluetooth function you can make calls using Zumo’s interface and listen to turn-by-turn directions too.

We’re not sure how much the road tech zumo will cost but currently zumo 550 goes for $687 and zumo 450 for $530.

Garmin is launching a specialized version of the Garmin Zumo - the Road Tech Zumo, a Garmin that is Harley customized; no not with chrome pipes, but with all the Harley Davidson dealerships pre-loaded and a special program to share rides at Harley-Davidson website. The Zumo of course allows riders to not only get from here to there, but also plan, swap and share rides online where the idea isn't to get from point A to B on the fastest route, but maybe the one with the most sweeping curves and vistas available.

Garmin has started several communities centered around their units, and this is a nice outgrowth of the Zumo Connect site where ride sharing is taking off with 1000's of rides uploaded.

You can find the latest Garmin Zumo - the Road Tech Zumo at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally going on this week in SD.

A full press release follows......

Garmin announced the introduction of the Road Tech zūmo, from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories. A customized version of Garmin's popular motorcycle-specific GPS device specially enhanced for Harley owners, the Road Tech zūmo will be on display and available for sale beginning the week of Aug. 4 at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and around the world in Harley-Davidson authorized dealerships.

"The Road Tech zūmo helps Harley riders plan and navigate their route with ease," said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales. "Packed with all of the preloaded features that zūmo users have come to expect and appreciate, the Road Tech zūmo anticipates the needs of Harley riders everywhere."

Road Tech zūmo's extensive directory of Harley-Davidson dealerships adds to the preloaded database of more than six million points of interests, such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. A custom handlebar mount quickly secures the Road Tech zūmo while providing the option of easily transferring the Road Tech zūmo to your car or truck for four-wheel navigation. And for those adventurers who want to plan and envision their road trip in advance, the ride planner at Harley-Davidson.com helps users find, create and adapt great rides and easily download them to the Road Tech zūmo. In addition, riders can swap routes and waypoints with other zūmo owners via the unit's SD card slot.

For the ultimate convenience and safety, riders will appreciate the Road Tech zūmo's glove-friendly design with left-handed controls and oversized touchscreen buttons. The waterproof (IEC 529 IPX-7 standards) device comes ready to go right out of the box. Simply enter a destination, and Road Tech zūmo takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names. And riders can get there in style, using custom vehicle icons to guide them on their journeys.

Simply press a button on the screen, and zūmo recalculates your route to avoid traffic.

With Road Tech zūmo's Bluetooth® wireless technology, you can talk on the phone safely without removing your gloves or helmet. Connect zūmo to your Bluetooth-enabled headset/helmet and cell phone to make and receive hands-free calls. You can even make phone calls to POIs through zūmo's Bluetooth interface. In addition, zūmo transmits navigation voice prompts to your headset so you can listen wirelessly.

Road Tech zūmo owners can also access trip information directly from the zūmo's trip information page. The bright display shows the rider their speed, heading and a customizable fuel gauge that lets them define the motorcycle's maximum fuel range and find a gas station when necessary. If a rider wants to leave the pavement for the trail, the zūmo accepts electronic topo maps for off-road navigation.

The Road Tech zūmo also has many security features. The custom mount is designed to withstand the severe vibration environment commonly experienced in motorcycle riding. The zūmo also includes Garmin Lock™, a unique theft prevention system that disables the zūmo from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location. If the user does not know the PIN or secure location, the zūmo will be inoperative.
